In the essay, “Turn Car On; Turn Phone Off”, we see research done at Harvard University shows that distracted drivers on cell phones cause roughly 2,600 fatalities crashed each year and 570,000 accidents. (115) Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity, thus having your attention taken away from the task at hand, which is driving. While there could potentially be several types of distractions that could occur while driving, texting causes you to take your eyes off the road, remove your hands from the steering wheel and it takes your mind off the road. Drivers who text and drive put their lives and the lives of others on the road at risk for injury and even death. While more and more drivers are multitasking through their day, we are made aware how more education and resources are needed to help solve this growing epidemic. AT&T has developed a campaign called, “It can wait.” Through this program, teen and adults are given steps to make a commitment to stop texting a driving. The first step is to have drivers take a pledge to never text while driving. It’s amazing how many people will still drive distracted, either by texting, talking on the phone, or even not paying attention to what is in front of them. Over 5,000 distracted driver crashes have occurred in Utah in a year. This has resulted in 3,000 injured and almost 20 deaths. Wouldn 't you think that would be enough to make people think and see what is happening? Texting or looking at your phone is now illegal in most states yet so many people still do it.

Only 14 states prohibit drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. There aren 't any states the ban all cell phone use for all drivers, but 38 states and D.C. ban cell phone use for novice drivers. Drivers read the statistics but then ignore them. There are many commercials, ads, books, and flyer with messages about the dangers of texting and driving. So if something so influential as the media can 't stop texting and driving what can?
Texting while driving is one of the biggest cause of death among young adults from ages 18-24 (Bergmark, E. Gliklich, Guo, R. Gliklich, 2016). This peril activity is related to motor vehicle collisions and mortality (Bergmark, E. Gliklich, Guo, R. Gliklich, 2016). Therefore, this is a very important preventable health issue that needs to be addressed since it affects young adults that have higher rates of texting while driving than older drivers. Below, I propose an intervention in order to spread awareness and knowledge regarding this very concerning public health issue that continues to persist. Proposed Intervention.
Texting while driving is probably one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. Drivers do not need to be distracted while trying to reach their destination safely. Texting and driving is almost as bad as drinking and driving. That is why everyone should take the It Can Wait Pledge.

Don’t text and drive.” According to the Federal Communications Commission, “(a)t any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. ” Texting and driving has become a bigger problem as time goes on.
Though laws have helped prevent cell phone use while operating a vehicle, cell phones still have only greatened the number of distracted driving accidents. Susan Henneberg is an author who focuses on writing about common issues in society. After hearing of a fatal distracted driving accident, she wrote of the accident, “The impact [of the crash] spun their car sideways into Shaw’s lane, and the trailing pickup truck plowed into the side of the Saturn, killing both men instantly”(Henneberg). Both of these drivers were physically hurt all because of texting and driving.
Texting and Driving has become a recent issue in today’s society. Many teens and adults have made a habit of using their cell phones while driving. Its distracting and getting in a car accident while on your phone is higher than if you aren’t on it. They made a law saying that using your phone while driving is illegal. One of the dangerous things about texting is how fast you can get in an accident by just looking at your phone for less than 5 seconds.
Every day drivers who choose to text risk their own life as well as yours. These are car accidents that don't have to happen. In 2011 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones, that's 1.3 million crashes. These can be easily prevented by turning off the phone while in the car.
