Annotated Bibliography In this day and age of school becoming more and more rigorous and the demand for our children 's education growing each year, an alternative option becomes an enticing thought. Homeschooling is something many people might not associate with modern times. Kids in the American school system are often times overworked and underplayed. Starting from as young as kindergarten, children are expected to sit at a desk and focus for up to eight hours a day with less and less outdoor free-time. Parents have been vocal for some time about their young child coming home with homework after spending a solid eight hours in class. Kids and adults alike are frustrated with the push of academic expectancy and minuscule creativity. The …show more content…
However, what homeschooling does provide are flexibility and freedom. The flexibility to choose materials the child is interested in learning more about and the freedom to choose where and when to spend family time together. Families are not held to an 8-3 school schedule with truants and late slips. They have the ability to plan vacations according to what works for their family, not what the school schedule allows for them. Many states have heavy regulations on homeschooling as far as the requirements and responsibilities go. However, the government in many places wants more regulations over homeschool education. Many want it to be outlawed altogether and the privilege to be taken away from families in order to have more control stating abuse and neglect on the parents part. Others want a more rigorous testing schedule and minimum educational requirements provided by the parent wanting to educate. Educational options serve to help the children not just be another number in the school system. They provide opportunities to engage students and nurture their interests in order to grow their knowledge of the working world they will eventually
Methods of Research I began my study into this issue after reading about the proposed bill on the Home School Legal Defense Association’s (HSLDA) website. I began by reading the proposed bill’s re-wording and verifying what the new changes would mean to homeschooling parents in Iowa. I then conducted a questionnaire of my own among homeschooling families regarding the way their state handles homeschool regulations, and lastly, I compiled a list of resources including: results from testing homeschooled students vs public schooled students, curriculum choices available to homeschooling families, and a historical look at homeschooled students who have vastly contributed to our country’s rich history. Task 1.

Most parents go to great lengths to provide their children with the best possible, including their child’s education. But, as in all things, people disagree about what is the “best” way. Danielle Mahek, in Why Public Schooling is the Best Option, supports the belief that parents should send their children to public school. She believes that public school is the best option for children today, but I believe that homeschooling is also a viable option for most children.
If I chose to play games or extracurricular activities I knew I had to juggle my time of play versus school. If I completed school for the week in the three days then I had a four day weekend, but if I didn 't take care of that schoolwork then that meant I had no weekend and privileges were taken away. By me knowing what my work was in advance for the week, it was my responsibility to accomplish that goal. I believe that homeschool made me mentally and physically sharp because I had more time to run and play in the yard and go to field trips like the space center, the Houston zoo, museums, robotic competitions and horse rescue rehabilitation ranches. As a family we were able to take vacations and trips when most students were in school which allowed more attention on tours at points of interest.
We have told our teachers time and time again how stressful such instances of homework are on our lives. We have told them of our predicaments with juggling school, home, sports, and free time. We have appealed to their instances of such oppression in their pasts. They too have been deaf to the troubles that grading homework has imposed upon them. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, that the eradication of homework would benefit both teachers and
Home schooling is a trending concept that is popular mostly in US and around the world. Home schooling preferred often by the parents that have environmental concerns, religious beliefs, lack of confidence to the education quality of the public and private schools and inadequacy of curriculum. They believe that they can give better education to their children at home. According to Jamie Martin (Homeschooling 101: What Is Homeschooling, 2012), home schooling began to grow in the 1970s, when popular writers and researchers such as John Holt and Dorothy and Raymond Moore wrote about the educational reforms and they alleged that home schooling is a valid educational alternative.
Many argue that the difference in standardized test scores is rendered null when one takes into account the matter of homeschooling families being of higher socioeconomic status, and the parents of such families having higher levels of formal education. However, the increased test scores among homeschoolers remains true regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income (“Home-schooling: Outstanding results on national tests,” The Washington
Homework, what is it good for? Why should elementary students have to do homework? When children come home from school with homework their parents make them sit down to do that work after they have spent 7 hours in school learning with minimal breaks. Children are mentally exhausted but ancy do to a lack of exercise. Conflict between children and their parents usually results because the former want down time and the latter fear their child won’t have a good life without good grades.
Over recent years, the debate has gotten more attention as to whether students should have homework as homework has seemed to increase. Students having homework does not benefit them in their academic skills and should be abolished. In countries like Japan and Denmark, the students don’t have much homework, but exceed the United States on international tests. A lot of tests have proven that homework does not help improve a student’s performance of skills.
Homeschool vs public school- an insanely controversial debate in which a student’s success and future are put on the line. The schooling years of a person are absolutely detrimental to whether or not that person will grow up to be prosperous and happy in life. Therefore, the method of schooling is an incredibly important topic of debate. Modern homeschooling began with John Holt, an educational theorist, who began having concerns about the mechanical-like characteristics of students who went through the public school system. A large motivator for people wanting to homeschool was having increased religious freedom, as public schools have become more and more secular and worldly.
An average student would spend hours on schoolwork a day, which can be very stressful. A high school student will use half of their day around school relation. Almost all elementary to high school students will likely to agree that homework should not be assigned. The majority of students complain about homework yet teachers don’t usually understand why. While homework gives benefits to students, unnecessary homework should not be assigned due to the fact that there are enough school hours, it consumes time, and the development of poor health is encouraged.
Currently, it is estimated that over one million families school their children at home. Most of these families include a breadwinner and a stay-at-home parent who does most of the teaching, although there are single parent families and dual career families who home school.” according to Teach Target. Personally, I believe that homeschooling isn’t the best option for kids; they rather go to school to help them with their social life, their level of understanding and to help them get inspired by the surroundings. There are a lot of reasons why parents should stop homeschooling their children and send them to public or private schools.
Exploring Education by Natilee Radosevich Invested parents all over the United States face a choice regarding their child's education. Although the age for mandatory schooling varies state to state, the one constant is the availability of free public education. However, in actuality, there are three main types of schooling: public, private, and home. Since there are pro's and con's to each of these, the decision is based on what is best for the individual family. Statistically, public schooling is the most common choice.
Parenting is not as easy as it seems. Every expecting family has racing thoughts on the type of parent they would like to become. There are four major parenting styles. Those styles are; authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. The four parenting styles have different attitudes and behaviors, they play a role in the way the children reacts.
A 1980s report named “A Nation at Risk” stated that American students were falling behind the global academic standard, and therefore educators assigned even more homework to children of lower grade levels (Spencer). Now, parents across the United States are pushing for elementary schools to ban homework, but not
