On October 28, 1993 a strike team of Delta Force operators launched an attack to capture a high ranking warlord living in Mogadishu Somalia. The goal of the operation was achieved but the local militia forced the soldiers into an overnight standoff that lasted well into the next day. In the end the United States lost 18 operators 73 were wounded and one was captured. The causes of the incident known as Black Hawk Down provide insight into changes made to U.S. tactics and foreign policy. One of the major factors that contributed to the fatality of the operation was the reliance on cutting edge technology. The military had a large arsenal of intel gathering equipment that was used and designed to deployed against a modern super power. This equipment proved useless in Somalia where most communication and weaponry used by the militia was too old to be detected. This led to the …show more content…
foreign policy and military tactics. One major change was the diversification of intel gathering sources relying less on technology and more on people. The way they valued informant information changed as well. The failure of the op made the military realize that the decisive terrain in combat is human terrain meaning that without significant first hand intel the success of an operation cannot be guaranteed. Probably the most important lesson learned is that the media plays a much larger role in war today than in previous wars. The Battle of Mogadishu is undeniably a tactical U.S. victory. The primary objective was achieved and despite being vastly outnumbered the U.S. suffered 18 deaths and 73 wounded, compared to 350 killed and 500 wounded Somalis. Despite this victory the images provided by the media showing U.S. soldiers being dragged through the streets forced the United States to withdraw due to a horrible public opinion of the
Tomahawk The tool I’m writing about is the Tomahawk(small throwing weapon.) pre- columbian tribes need this weapon because it has many different uses. They also need this tool because it is very important to many tribes. The Tomahawk is small.
The great thing about Fort Benning, Georgia is that it was an infantry post. If any military post in the United States could hold and not turn against the country, it was Fort Benning. Therefore the decision to drop the Special Forces A Team during daylight hours and as near to main post was a no brainer.
Operation Slapshot is an undercover operation conducted by New Jersey state police to take down a gambling ring that took place throughout the United States. The ring involved Janet Jones, Rick Tocchet, James Harney, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Barnett, Jeremy Roenick, and Travis Green. There were also other players, coaches, and other staff members who were implicated in the gambling ring. The gambling ring allegedly had ties to the Bruno-Scarfo crime family, who has their operation in Philadelphia and in southern New Jersey.
1. There are many accusations of who was responsible for the smallpox outbreak in Fort Pitt, during the summer 1763. Many of the Native Americans accused the British soldiers of being responsible for the outbreak. There is suspension that Jeffery Amherst, the British commander in chief, knew of smallpox infected blankets being given to Natives by the end of June. William Trent is also credited with writing an account of the event in his diary.
As mentioned in Napoleons’ Button (Couteur and Burreson, 2003), ever since the discovery of penicillin, wound infection declines, saving plenty of lives, especially during the World War 2. The rapid advancement of drugs has indeed come a long way and even revolutionized the world. Drugs such as paracetemol helps to subside one’s fever and provide pain relief. On the other hand, drugs that are widely used illegally such as cocaine would be detrimental to one’s personal health when consumed. In any case, the mere existence of drugs is good in nature.
Virginia Military Institute opened its doors in 1839 as a public senior military college in Lexington, Virginia. It has a selective admission rate with under 2,000 students. The Latin motto is “In pace decus, in bello prasesidum”. In English, this translates to, “In peace a glorious asset, in war a tower of strength”. This is the oldest institute of its class within the United States and it has kept with all of its founding principles.
The exclusive geography of Greater Appalachia and the settlers’ opposition to oppression developed the identity of the region and its inhabitants, which emphasized personal honor and individual liberty. As shown on a resource map of Greater Appalachia, the topography of the region excluded the inhabitants, who were known as Borderlanders, from acquiring necessary resources, such as forests or fish. The Borderlands did not have many resources at hand; items such as timber or oil were more commonly found in the Deep South (Glencoe). Additionally, as mentioned by Colin Woodward in American Nations, “With no roads, trade was almost entirely by barter” (Woodward 104). Because of limited resources and roads, the geography of Greater Appalachia prevented the
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery stands on top of a hill overlooking Washington, DC. Although the soldiers are unknown, they brought great honor to our country by their sacrifices for our freedom. Hanging the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier would be a great honor because I highly appreciate the opportunity to pay respect to the fallen heroes who were not given the chance to receive the recognition they so deserved. Putting the wreath on the tomb would also remind me of my family members who have served and fought for my freedom and that of all Americans.
Some things that were also similar were the change of name for items. When World War 1 was taking place some Orchestras refused to play the works of German composers like Beethoven. When the War on Terror was going on the U.S. changed the name of French Fries to Freedom Fries because the French did not like the idea of invading Iraq. Prejudice also started to rise again.
“The game is on the line with 5 seconds left, they have one last play and no timeouts left. The QB hands it off to the running back, he does a spin move, stiff arms the corner back, and runs to the outside. He breaks free, he runs to the 30, 20, 10, 5, TOUCHDOWN!!! GAME WINNING PLAY!
There are many ways to inforce order into the world, there is a peaceful way when everyone is happy, or the enforcer can conjure fear into their victim’s and force them to do as they say. The Deltas use fear to round up all the Somali people, “When crowded house was filled suddenly with explosions, smoke, and flashes of light, those inside were momentarily frightened and disoriented” (Bowden 13). Conversely, by causing fear to the Somali people, The Deltas were able to order them to do whatever The Deltas wanted them to do. Ultimately, one would assume that as a soldier goes into war that they are under constant fear throughout the whole situation due to all the gunfire and the brink of death. However, that is not the case for The Deltas, “Look, for the first ten minutes or so you’re [going to] be scared…after that you’re going to get [so mad that you’ll forget you were ever scared]” (Bowden 40).
The protection of United States territory, sovereignty, population, and critical infrastructure against external threats and aggression is a main mission for the military. Although military size has decreased over the past years it is apparent that the advances in the technology by way of the military development is necessary. Regardless of the decrease in size the military paired with it’s capabilities for homeland security, which by definition is different then homeland defense. The military plays a huge part in both homeland efforts. “Homeland security is defined as: a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce the vulnerability of the United States to terrorism, and minimize the damage and assist in the recovery from terrorist attacks.
Tayla Galvin Grade 12-M History Original Research Task Research Question: ‘To what extent does the movie United 93 accurately depict the devastation of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as the economic and social consequences it still has on the USA in present times?” Introduction On September 11th 2001, a series of 4 co-coordinated terrorist attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda – an Islamic terrorist group, in order to cripple the US and destroy their main hotspots. The origins of al-Qaeda can be traced to 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden traveled to Afghanistan and helped organize Arab mujahideen to resist the Soviets.
“A strategy … in the past U.S. counterterrorism … dramatically ramped up its intelligence capabilities,” (Monaco). By creating organizations with the goal of taking care of these types of situations allow us to take the stance and to not panic (as much) while feeling safe. The disappearances that the Symbionese Liberation Army is responsible for and the events and the overall result of the Witch Trails are similar by having a huge effect on
