Crooks a black man working on the same ranch as George and Lennie can effortlessly compare what George says in this statement. From the beginning of the book, Steinbeck clearly sets the pair's relationship dynamic: George is Lennie''s caretaker, leading readers to believe that lennie is in need of help. Later, Steinbeck states how George had promised Lennie's aunt that he would take care of Lennie and stay with him. Lennie's own slow and dumb speech as well as his difficulty understanding things without George stating them explicitly clearly solidified that he was very simple and most likely had a mental disability.
They had been talking and Lennie was feeling her hair, and before that, Curley’s wife was telling him about her dream. In conclusion, with these three points, companionship is essential to life. With the shooting of Candy’s dog, the conversation between Lennie and Crooks, and Curley's wife trying to have conversations with the workers because of her loneliness, companionship is needed in these situations because loneliness is very evident in the book and everyone is looking for someone to talk to. Since 1931 when James Truslow Adams first created the phrase “the American Dream”, people believed that America continuously offered everyone an equal opportunity to be successful. John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, was set during the Great Depression. Farms were struck hard during the Depression, and the two main characters George and Lennie were farm hands during this time. They had experienced the misunderstandings of other farm hands in terms of Lennie’s mental disability, but they were trying to earn enough money to buy their own farm. The idea of this farm drove Lennie and George to keep working, and like many others during this time they hoped to achieve this dream.
The story place takes place in America and was published during the modern literary time period. This book was published in the year of 1937 and the big literary movements at the time were modernism, and The Bloomsbury Group. Modernism focused on being different from other eras and giving different forms of art a new aspect. During this era new techniques, such as irony, were introduced. I feel Of Mice and Men fits more into this movement because it focuses more on new techniques and remaking literature.
