Character and Movie Overview Casablanca (1942) is a romantic drama set in Casablanca, a city in French-controlled Morocco during World War II. The movie depicts the experiences of the residents of Casablanca, with focus on Rick Blaine, an expatriate barred from returning to his country, and the patrons of his café, as well as the refugees from throughout Europe who are hoping to escape the Nazis to the safety in the still-neutral United States of America. While growing up, Rick’s only example of a functioning job was his father’s. As a hired gun, Rick’s father Alexander made sure he had ‘insurance policies’ or some form of protection from his clients so to ensure his own safety as well as Rick, allowing himself to accept jobs from either side of many conflicts. This neutrality provided him with access to more jobs, which were necessary for him to support himself as well as Rick. Due to this strategy, Alexander worked for both sides of many of the gang wars throughout New York City, with a sense of invincibility. This invincibility lead to Alexander becoming prominent and well-respected throughout the city, and provided Rick to see through operant learning, that there were perks to keeping a neutral stance in life. In Rick’s teen years, he began to work with his father in his business as a hired gun and ‘problem-solver’ for many of New York city’s gangs. The movie ordinary people is describing a family who is having trouble trying to function with each other normally after losing their son and brother Buck to a boat accident. Buck was the reason that the family was sticking together and were functioning more normally than ever. They would be more connected by talking a lot with each other, doing family activities together, laughing and smiling all the time with each other. Then after that it changed them completely which left them being bitter, depressed, and even having lots of flashbacks of their pasts. Like how Conrad tried to commit suicide because of the lost, which he was lucky enough to survive from that.

Although not very evident throughout the film, discrimination plays a huge role in the movie “La Bamba”. The type of discrimination we see in the movie consist of; prejudices against Hispanics and stereo types. Richie is of Mexican descent and although he does not speak Spanish, people many times assumed that he does because of his appearance. An example of this is when Bob speaks to Richie in Spanish when they first meet (44:04). Here, we encounter a type of stereotype that all Latinos don’t know English.

President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
The intriguing world of Casablanca, displays a wondrous mise-en-scene in fashion that accentuates emotions and feeling through aspects of cinematography. From the movement of the camera, to the intricacy of the shot distances chosen to be included within the frame, the film reveals important elements of the diegesis without uttering a sound. The cinematography of Casablanca gives the audience an insight into the intimacy of Rick and Ilsa's relationship, and seeks to situate the viewer’s attention to the space and time of the film. Throughout the film, Rick’s romantic relationship, or rather previous relationship, with Ilsa appears to be a focal point of the film.

He is the owner of a club that helps people from other countries receive their letters of transit. This club was a safe haven for many of the refugees. This club would allow for the refuges to obtain their letters of transit as well as earning some quick cash for traveling from gambling in the secret room.
In the end, in the brightness of the hanger, Rick and the French official are forced to abandon the shadows and their neutrality to pick a side. They let Isla and Lazlo leave, kill Major Strasser, and walk into the foggy darkness, neutrality abandoned, committed to freedom. The cinematography in Casablanca is critical in directing the audience’s attention, shaping the audiences feelings, and revealing the theme of the movie. Those that believe Casablanca is not film noir usually perceive Film Noir as a genre. Noir is not a genre; Noir transcends genres and behaves more accurately as a style of cinema. As styles go, there can be variations of them as we see now with Post-Noir and Neo Noir, noir elements in a different time period of film technology which makes these films slightly different than the style of classic film noir. Themes of cynicism, impending doom, loss, jeopardy of life accompanied by visuals dominated by shadows, strong lines, and overall darkness to the image make up film noir’s style. Noir is not absolute, the beauty of this style is its vulnerability to variation, which is why Michael Curtiz’s Classic Casablanca is film noir.

In the movie Casablanca directed by Michael Curtiz, the theme of this mysterious/ romantic is self-sacrifice and unhappy love. These themes are best expressed in the interactions of the three main characters: Victor Laszlo, Ilsa Lund, and Rick Blaine. A love triangle forms with both men’s mutual love for Ilsa. Unlike the typical romantic love triangle, in the end, the results lead to unhappiness and loss for all of them.
