Throughout the civil rights movement, there were many ways Georgia played a significant role. This includes changing their state flag after the passing of the Brown v. Board ruling, deciding to desegregate schools, and the many protests that were held in Georgia. In 1956, a year after the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, Georgia played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement by changing its state flag to resemble the 3rd flag for the Confederate States of America. This response was important because Georgia seemed to be making a statement that they did not support the desegregation of schools, and that they were against the Supreme Court Ruling. A large part of this was because of the Sibley Commision, and the leader of the commission, John Sibley. This was notable because the desegregation of schools was a big achievement in the Civil Rights Movement, and in education overall. The text states, “In 1960, Georgia Governor Ernest Vandiver, Jr. was faced with a decision to either close public schools or comply with a federal order to desegregate them.” (Document 4: The Sibley Commision.) This shows the two options that Georgia had, desegregation or closing public schools. Some other states chose to close their public schools, while Georgia chose to desegregate. The passage says, “Sibley recommended that the state accept the federal decision to desegregate the schools despite the commission's findings. In January of 1961, Governor Vandiver introduced a bill that accepted the Sibley Commission's recommendations for desegregation.” (Document 4: The Sibley Commision.) Georgia was known for its resistance to desegregation and voting rights, and many white Georgians were openly hostile to civil rights activists. For example, several people supported the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist terrorist organization. Georgia governor Lester Maddox was also an opponent of the civil rights movement. Maddox was known for his segregationist views and his support for the Ku Klux Klan. He believed that God shouldn’t have made different races if he wanted them to get along (document 13).
Dr Martin Luther King Jr was responsible for the success of the Civil Rights Movement which occurred during the 1960’s to a small extent. Although King played a significant role in the movement of achieving desegregation, he wasn’t the fundamental cause of change in the United States of America. The movement didn’t only take its cue from King’s leadership, however, his leadership per se predominantly relied on a vast network of local leaders, hence he had little to zero direct involvement. Rather, organisations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee directed vast majority of the voter registration which ultimately contributed to desegregation. In her article, Hannah-Jones stated that a mere 1% of African American children attended school with white children in 1963, but by the early 70s, this number jumped to an astounding 90%.2 Throughout the article, Hannah-Jones talks about a multiplicity of cases where desegregation orders have been dismissed or “lost,” however, there remains a glaring lack of actual statistics that show segregation in the public education system. For these reasons, the goals of the Supreme Court’s goals have been accomplished. Obviously, the country still faces extreme racial disparities and continues to strive for equality, but in the early 1950s, no one could have predicted the rapid success of Brown v. This ruling set the stage for the desegregation of schools across the country, and President Eisenhower played a crucial role in making it a reality. One of the main reasons why desegregating public schools was a good idea is that it provided equal educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their race.
The Civil Rights march of August 1963 was very important because over 200,000 people marched to Washington to demand equal protection. This march showed how many people were willing to fight for change and lead to the ratification of the 24th amendment. The NAACP was another group that led a positive effort towards the civic issue. For example it says “NAACP Youth Council chapters staged sit-ins at whites-only lunch counters, sparking a movement against segregation in public accommodations throughout the South in 1960.” African Americans were tired of waiting and thus led to the massive riots in the country which eventually led to the civil rights bill on June 19, 1963.
In 1954 the Supreme Court decided to make a historic decision and made it unconstitutional to make public schools segregated. 3 years after segregation was banned the south was still not accepting of the new rule so when nine students in Little Rock, Arkansas tried to join the white high school they were not accepted. At first, there were huge protests and violence to stop the kids but that still did not work. After that, the state called in the National Guard to keep the kids out but the kids became so popular in the news that the president sent in the actual Army to protect the kids and keep the rioters out. 5 years after that was a big step for the University of Mississippi because their first black student was admitted in 1962.
The beginning of the Civil Rights movement was the beginning of a new America. It cannot be pinpointed to a certain day, location, or person. Two young black men, however, have risen up to be the most recognizable faces of the new era: Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm Little (X). These two men are polar opposites in many aspects. Martin Luther King Jr. was in the middle class, whereas Malcolm X was in poverty.
On July 02, 1964 , Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited against people discriminating against another because of their skin color , so everybody was treated equally. L.B.J he became president after John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963 and L.B.J took office the next day. He finished what J.F.K wanted and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Political means some did it for votes or for something and principle means the person did something because it was the right thing to do. Why did L.B.J sign it was, it a political decision or was it a principle decision?
Racial relations in America were reaching a tipping point during the 1950’s and 60’s. The state of Georgia was no different; the African Americans of the time wanted to be treated as equals, while Whites of the time wanted to maintain superiority. The University of Georgia played a major part in whether segregation would remain the norm, or if the state would slowly make changes to desegregate. It is believed that only scare tactics, such as the ones used by the KKK, were used to keep segregation in place for as long as it was; however, segregation survived at UGA for as long as it did because of people like Governor Talmadge and UGA President Aderhold. Whenever the Supreme Court made the ruling that all schools must integrate, the south retaliated. Instead of cooperating, whites sent their children to all white schools to show their disapproval. This banned blacks from being able to integrate with all the white kids. In addition, the "segregation academies" were very different than the public schools that the blacks went to. This was even more unfair to everyone.
