The near crippling panic following the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union (Modern day Russia), is known as the “Red Scare”. The “Red Scare” was solely based on a government official, Joseph R. McCarthy, accusing members of the opposing force, left-wing liberals, of being communist spies from the Soviet Union. These unsupported accusations made against someone or a group is also known as McCarthyism. These accusations against other members of the government sparked a wildfire of fear among civilian life within the US. This ever growing fear of communism invading the american way of life was implanting paranoia within the nation’s people on a private and public level. The first red scare was initiated the same way as the most recent red scare in 1950s. After both world wars, the spread of communism was on the rise. The “Red Scare” of the 1950s was sparked primarily due to Joseph R. McCarthy. McCarthy pushed unsupported accusations against other members in the state department after claiming he had a list of known communists within the foundation of our government (Joseph McCarthy). These unsupported accusations are also known as “McCarthyism”. “McCarthyism is a mid-20th century political attitude characterized chiefly by opposition to elements held to be subversive. (McCarthyism). These accusations against other members of the state set in an underlying fear in the mass populous of the american people. In a public sense of affliction, business’ and other establishments were being boycotted under the assumption that possible communists were in charge of said establishments. This fear even pushed some americans to the absolute extremes, such as rioting, looting, and in some cases murder. When delving into a more personal level, “Government officials and people within the commonwealth of america were even being pushed to blame one another to save themselves from destructive criticism.” (Clark). Civilians were hounded by law enforcement, alienated from friends and family, and lost their jobs due to McCarthyism at it's finest (Red Scare). In the late 1930s a group by the name of “House Un-American Activities Committee” (HUAC) was formed (Red Scare). HUAC had found itself with “work” on its hands. HUAC questioned many writers and actors that were affiliated with the left-wing film industry (Reds In Hollywood). A good example of the “work” HUAC had conducted were hearings against “The Hollywood Ten”. The Hollywood Ten was a small congregation of actors and writers that had claimed that the hearings involving themselves and right-wing conservatives were unfair to them (Reds In Hollywood). It is now known that the hearings were in fact, not fair, “In judicial affairs, for example, support for free speech and other civil liberties eroded significantly.” stated
With all of the events that took place during this time, they all added up to cause a scare in America at the time. I believe that McCarthy was the main cause of the Red Scare because of his accusations of many American people. McCarthy accused American citizens as well as the United States government while HUAC only accused Hollywood
In the 1950’s, America just came out of World War 2. The economy was prosperous, many soldiers were creating families, and communism was a widespread fear for Americans. The Red Scare was the fear of the threat of communism arising in America. The Federal government took many measures to make sure communism didn’t spread in America. In 1949 there was word of Russia making nuclear tests.
The Red Scare was really what the name says it is a “Scare of the Red”. The red was Russia or communism. Right after World War I and the Revolution in Russia, the United States was overcome with fear. There was wide spread fear of communisis and socialists. The time frame was in the 1900s between 1919 and 1920.
During the Red Scare three groups of people were monitored which were Scientist, people who worked in the government, and in Education. Scientists were monitored because they could share information of nuclear weapons with the USSR. In fact, two people did tell the USSR how to make atomic weapons, and they go executed. The Government was also being monitored because they could share military information with the USSR.
This article discusses the red scare (McCarthyism) at the local level of the United States. The red scare had a malicious effect in components of American life outside politics and entertainment. There were red scares in labor, education, religion, business, the fine arts, and, in a multiplicity of forms, and at the local community level. The author focuses on the city of Houston, where the community engaged in this tactic. Carleton urges archivists and manuscript curators involved in documenting local history, to be aware of the need to collect materials related to the extreme anti-Communist reaction at the local level, and of previous collections that pertain to the phenomenon.
The first Red Scare occurred right after WWI and when the Jazz age and prohibition started. America was a notable economic power, and the KKK dominated the South opposing to the law. The first Red Scare was a fear of communists, socialists, and anarchists. A series of anarchist bombings, innocent people were jailed for sharing their views, and civil rights were ignored. The amount of fear, as fast as it came it went away just as fast.
Hysteria throughout The Crucible, the Red Scare and 9-11 Throughout The Crucible, the Red Scare, as well as 9-11, one can see that these three have a lot in common. Whether it is the threat to the society, the wild rumors or the way that people were treated. These three events all relate even though they occurred at three very different moments of the time. In The Crucible, there are only perceived threat as one knows that the society thinks the devil is among them when really he is not. The threats are witchcrafting and the devil moving into the community.
This kind of hysteria caused the Red Scare, which was a period that Americans thought communists were working to destroy America. This mass fear of communism ruined people’s lives and made them turn against their own family and friends. Joseph McCarthy played an
This is the Second Red Scare during the 1950’s, when the word McCarthyism came about. Deep in the throes of the Cold War, at this time America was gripped with a paralyzing fear about the spread of Communism. Paranoia blossomed and progressive movements such as feminism and labor reform were labeled as dangerously close to Communism. An anti-Communist sentiment grew into a movement against a variety of different communities.
McCarthyism was another way of speaking about the fears of Americans about the spread of communism and the ensuing purge of communism from the States. According to our text and most history books, the fears of communism taking hold in the United States became real after the end of WWII. The communists had made it clear that their ambition was to have the entire world turn communist. People like McCarthy, Nixon, and even the president began to sound the alarm that communists were everywhere. The American Public bought into it and the attempts to expel any communists had begun.
How did the Red Scare affect the lives of the American people during the 1920s ? In the 1920s America, The Red Scare also known as the fear of communism in the United States was a time of terror of believing communism would arrive and spread throughout the U.S. As it was becoming into place in European countries. During the 1920s Americans acted irrationally in fear. The terror caused nativism to arize and immigration policies to be established and re written..
During the twentieth century, liberals were anxious to distance themselves from anything that might possibly be perceived as being associated with communism, which resulted in many cold war liberals abandoning their original concerns. Not only did the nation’s cultural and intellectual life suffer as a result of the weakened noncommunist left, but the institutions of American democracy suffered as well. Rather than arguing against issues, such as McCarthyism, that were occurring and would have originally concerned left-wing ideologists, those issues now became irrelevant. Therefore, in my opinion, the weakening of the noncommunist left can be partly blamed on liberals and progressives who reacted poorly to accusations that they were communist
The Red Scare was about McCarthyism and the fear of being accused of being a communist. The two events were very similar, both having people scared to be out because of the random accusations being made as well as the deaths that were happening. Reverend Hale stated to Danforth “Excellency, I have signed seventy-two death warrants; I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it. ”(Miller, 966).
There are many questions in the complexity of this event. Why was this terror, called the Red Scare? Why were Americans so worried? What were results, or actions taken? What contributed to the Red Scare?
During The Big Red Scare, America was over-reacting to an impartially lucid fear and being unable to subjugate the foreign enemy; Americans unraveled. In order to back up their falsified claims that communists were everywhere, any person who was indifferent to the persecution of said fear was branded as a likely suspect of communism. The fear of radicals increased and led to the fear of being thought radical. However, this national panic was somewhat justified by the minute threat of socialist and labor union strikes as well as several public outbreaks of violence. These issues took many forms including that of a perverted persecution of anything that the dominant white Protestants deemed as un-American.
