Why Community Colleges Should Not Be Tuition Free The decision to whether or not make community colleges tuition free was brought up by President Obama. He has proposed that the federal government should cover 75% of the cost of tuition and states pay the rest. The disadvantages this causes are extremely unfair to the taxpayers. Although it will reduce costs for families that have people in their homes going to college, it will increase costs for taxpayers, who may not have any children in college or are themselves not in college. (Herk 3) If this proposal does happen, more people would decide to go to community college, which means overcrowded classrooms and not having a better quality education.
