She resorts to talking with other men by flirting, but only makes Curley more protective and abusive towards the other men she is associating with. People do not see others’ internal selves, but only their external images. By focusing only on the outer appearance, the men on the farm see Curley’s wife as a “tart” (Steinbeck 29). Curley is very pejorative and the men in the ranch
Curley’s wife has a need for attention, so she flirts with all the guys on the ranch. Because she is self-obsessed, she is unable to see any faults in herself and doesn’t see any harm in flirting with the other men.
Of Mice and Men revolves around ranch workers, which, for the most part, are lonely. They move around from job to job by themselves, doing whatever it takes to survive. When Lennie and George arrive at the ranch, everyone is surprised to see two people arrive together. In Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry is depicted as especially lonely, ever since he lost his wife, Ethel. He does not have many people to talk to, considering how he does not have a wife and he has a difficult time communicating with his only son.
Although both Crooks and Curley’s wife are victims of discrimination, Crooks has to aggressively hide the effects of racism, while Curley’s wife flirtatiously conceals the effects of sexism. Like most African Americans during the 1930’s, Crooks deals with the heavy oppression of racism on a daily basis. The white men call him a ‘nigger’ as well as a ‘negro’. He’s not only verbally bullied, but he also isn’t allowed the same privileges and leisure time activities as other men. He “can’t play [cards] because [he’s] black” and he can’t be in the bunk house because they say he stinks (Steinbeck 67).

Curley's wife desires to be the center of attention. She does this because she bases her self worth on what others think, but others do not think highly of her. Despite having a husband, she flirts with every man on the farm. She hates Curly and this is her way of breaking the restraints Curly has implemented in her. Along with being egotistical, she is also an irritable woman who is bitter because her dreams of being a movie star were shattered by her repressive mother.

The author teaches the reader that friendship is mostly about conversation, and magnifies the effects of isolation through the eyes of Crooks, Curley’s wife and Candy.
First, loneliness is the sadness caused by having no friends or company, and friendship is a state of mutual trust and support between people, they are polar opposites, yet a person may acclaim to have both.
