Brianna Whorley 2A Current Event 1 In response to the Orlando shooting, protests broke in Congress about the controversy on gun control. During this protest many republicans tried to stop the sit-in by shutting down cameras that were broadcasting the sit-in on national TV; however, democrats stood their ground by taping the speeches and posting them via periscope and Facebook. One democrat stated that, “the sit-in was breaking rules anyway.” By Wednesday afternoon many democrats and over 34 senators out of the 44 that were attendance were on the floor of the house (some literally on the floor). As time passed, nearing its 11th hour, Speaker Paul Ryan tried to resolve this conflict by calling for a recess. Leading this sit-in was congressman …show more content…
The republicans are not in favor of gun control, but in favor of the Second Amendment, which is the right to bear arms, while democrats are in favor of gun control. This article addresses many different opinions of liberals and conservatives. This article also addresses a flaw in our two-party system, because with the rise of democrats coming into the Senate, there will be a rise in conflicts between the two opposing parties. However, the republican representatives stand strong with their belief that they can not take away a constitutionally given right without due process. Due process is the fair treatment for all humans using the normal judicial system especially through entitlement by a citizen. The conflict between the parties is weakening the power of our national government because without Congress working together to create laws they are opposing each other. Even though this opposition may weaken us it is one of Congress 's’ implied powers. An implied power is a power that is practically given to the federal government, also known as an elastic clause. Congress’ arguments on gun control is wasting time, while they are arguing over something that may not ever be changed rather that passing new reasonable laws that can strengthen our country. The Democratic sit in was overall a failure at moving any
Bipartisanship in Congress has not changed much since the 1970s. The dichotomy between before War Powers resolution and after makes theorizing about the relationship as a dividing line between Foreign policy surround a dangerous international environment into one that is a function of a resurgent Congress. The more we get through the 21st Century the more it seems as Congress having more and more of an influence and acting not in concert with the President while hearing loudly what the People of the U.S. know and hear about through the media. It is likely that without any incentives for stopping politics as usual, they both will most likely continue to shape policy according to their own political needs. Further evolution has occurred due to
Congressional Caucus Chaos In “With Boehner’s Departure, Congressional Dysfunction Will Only Grow,” Norman J. Ornstein argues that a radical group in the Republican Party has kept progress from being made and John Boehner resigning from his Speaker of the House position will not make things on Capitol Hill any more productive. Ornstein says that, “The realists, like Boehner, understand that divided government requires compromise,” but unfortunately, extremists are unwilling and outright opposed to doing just that. Ornstein believes a successful upcoming congressional session does not have a chance at occurring and finds Radical Republicans to blame because they have made stopping President Obama’s plans a priority. I agree that one group of Republicans are keeping Congress from not only passing meaningful legislation on the controversial topics, but keeping them from passing common sense laws; however, I disagree with the author in regards to Congress staying on this uncivil, unproductive path.
Senator Jackie Speier, Representative from California 's 14th District, has a solid history in Congress. She currently serves on many Legislative Committees; Armed Services, Oversight and Government Reform, Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Subcommittee on Military Personnel, Subcommittee on NSA and Cybersecurity, and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations (Armed Services). Within this year alone she has only been absent or abstained from a National Key vote six times out of 50. My perception of Senator Speier’s congressional performance is optimistic and confident.
There is also always going to be strength in numbers, so while the representatives may be in the minority party, there are still multiple people that are willing to come together and push for the change necessary. This is especially important in that they could come together to ensure that the majority party is being held responsible for their decisions and that they are fulfilling needs from both
Many of those Congressmen took advantage of a new Congressional tool, C-Span by addressing the House under special orders that is, after the regular session has concluded but where members of Congress are still permitted to make speeches on the floor. By this point, the chamber is almost totally deserted. O’Neill had instructed the cameras to focus on the GOP Congressman addressing the near empty chamber. When they were alerted, they attacked it as an indication of the way the House was being run. That led to another incident.
The Bill of Rights is something the American people hold close to them, especially their right to bear arms. Recently there has been a lot of debate over implementing gun regulations without infringing on the rights of the people. While a position of this is expressed in Wayne LaPierre’s “Universal Background Checks Mean Gun Registration, Gun Bans and Confiscation”, Jeffrey Toobin’s “So You Think You Know the Second Amendment” provides a more valid position evaluating the issue of gun control. Universal background checks are a big discussion lately in our country’s current climate.
Williams and Margolies-Mezvinsky are both members of the Democratic Party, and were two of the forty Democrats in the House of Representatives who did support the plan. After the Democratic leaders “finally managed to convince” the pair to switch their votes, the budget plan made it through (92). President Clinton went as far as personally calling Margolies-Mezvinsky on the telephone to ask for her vote and “convinced her to get on board” (Sarlin). Williams similarly received a telephone call asking for his vote, and “after his talk with the President, Mr. Williams decided to wait to the last minute to vote, just in case his aye was needed” (Krauss). Although the two originally believed that the plan should not be used, they struggled to hold onto their ideas as they were relentlessly pressured by members of their own political party to side with them.
Take the idea of DHS funding. This important issue needed to go through the Senate, and the Democrats used a filibuster, so that the motion would not pass. If the Democrats did not use this filibuster, the Republicans would pass the bill easily, while immediately after, President Obama would veto it. The reason the Democrats used a filibuster, was to identify with their party. These senators had to identify with their president or otherwise be ridiculed and shunned by their party.
The topic of gun control and firearm regulation has been subject to heated debate for a long while. Both sides have potent arguments, however the core of this issue ultimately boils down to the constitution itself. More specifically the second amendment. This argument quickly becomes quite complicated because gun control and firearm regulation concerns not only the right of citizens, but more importantly the safety of citizens. The second amendment helps to guarantee an imperative right belonging to all citizens.
Filibustering in the Senate has its origin back to “the 1850s” (“Filibuster and Cloture”), yet many landmark filibusters happened in the 20th century. For instance, in 1957 “South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond spoke continuously for twenty- four hours and eighteen minutes to prevent the passage of civil rights legislation. Thurmond still holds the record for the longest filibuster” (English 110). However, because of the time- consuming characteristic of filibusters, debates over changing the regulations to curtail
Every country has their issues, but some countries issues are worse than others. The United States of America has a very unique issue where the whole problem is said to be allowed according to the constitution. Gun laws and the right to bear arms has been a highly controversial subject for an exceptionally long time. Hardcore Republicans, which currently rule virtually all of US Government do not contribute to the solving of this issue. If you look at the evolution of firearms, there has been a drastic change in the fire rate, ammunition capacity, range, and accuracy.
While Novak does not necessarily appear to support any side of the gun control argument, he does imply that Republicans have largely derailed efforts to enforce the law regarding gun violence cases. The writer’s main purpose for writing the article is to show that there is a different way of looking at the gun control debate and to also show the wrongs, in his opinion, that are committed by the interested parties in this debate. Novak takes the risk of appearing subjective in his article which can make him appear less professional. As a journalist, he is supposed to appear

26 Oct. 2015. This article talks about the supporters and non-supporters of gun control and what all of it could lead too. It talks about our Second Amendment rights and how the Democrats as well as The Republicans wanted to make it harder for the mentally ill to get firearms in their hands. They would increase the funding for the prosecutions and they would even get more strict on the control of gun trafficking. This article also states that The Democrats were very quick to blame The Republicans for the broken gun laws.
Majority of the people who oppose gun control believe that it violates the Second Amendment. The Revere Journal says that “In terms of the substance of the Second Amendment, the notion of a militia has no practical meaning today relative to what that term meant in the late 18th century. We are long past the days when farmers left the fields to become de facto soldiers, or when posses were rounded up to chase outlaws, or when settlers were on their own in a hostile environment. Some pretend that a lifestyle that no longer exists still has meaning in the America of the 21st century.” The people that agree on needing strict gun control laws will find a stronger connection to this image compared to the people who oppose
