The American Revolution was clearly a very important time period in the history of the United States. Through the great effort of the patriots, Americans won the independence they deserved. With this in mind, I am not taken back by the fact that so many documents were made based off of the revolution. In class, we watched The Patriot and the mini-series The Revolution; both were based on the war. Though, the series The Revolution was made entirely of fact, The Patriot included both facts and fiction. The Patriot included the actual war tactics of Tarleton or Tavington (The Revolution), the slaves fighting for freedom and Cornwallis’ surrender at the end of the movie. In The Revolution, Lincoln feels like he and his men are doomed; the British are slowly taking over Charleston. Lincoln suggests that they should arm slaves to get their numbers up (The Revolution). The men refuse saying that arming slaves is suicide but, later on, slaves that are in the army for a certain number of years earn freedom (The Revolution). Audiences view a slave fighting for freedom directly in The Patriot. Martin's militia actually contains one slave that is fighting for his freedom (The Patriot). While they are walking through a town the slave sees a poster that is meant to recruit slaves (The Patriot). One of the men taunts the slave and reads it to him when the slave is set back becomes excited by the offer, he is harassed by the man yet again (The Patriot).
