During the antebellum period, the huge differences existed between the North and the South in many ways. To begin with, the economy of the North once was similar to that of the South; however, as the U.S. started to develop economically, the North became more industrialized. With the advent of the new technologies, factories in the North could produce more things than before to supply the strong market demand of the nation. On the contrary, the South still was a farming region where farmers mainly worded on plantations to grow cotton. To make more profits, the wealthy plantation owners in the South started to force slaves to labor on the plantations. As a result, slavery became an important part in the southern industry, which also led to the controversy of the slavery issue. Furthermore, the different economic system between the two camps widened the economic gap between the North and the South. While the former enjoyed more economic development and profits, the latter suffered seriously from economic losses. Another factor led the inevitable war was the social difference between the …show more content…
The differences in culture, economy, social structure and ideology had been existed since the founding of the republic. However, no wars had ever happened until 1860. Certainly, the differences between the North and the South contributed to the Civil War, but they were not the main factors that made the war inevitable. On the contrary, it was that politicians from both sides to make the war inevitable. For example, one of the Republican strategists, Salmon P. Chase, orchestrated all the political strategies to turn slavery issue into a political one. If it were not these politicians’ calculations and maneuvers to achieve their political goals and gains, the inevitable war would have been avoidable. As Michael F. Holt
It was the late 1850’s, early 1860’s and the United States was experiencing a great divide between both the North and the South which eventually led to the start of the Civil War. One may ask why the rift existed between the states and it can simply be explained in just a few key points. Economic and social factors were a large contributor. The cotton industry in the south was booming with the invention of the cotton gin which in turn caused an increased need for slaves making the south a one crop economy.
Geography Geography Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war. The northerners were against slavery and the southerners were proslavery. It depended upon what state that you have lived in if you were a free state or not. In the south there were More than 4 million slaves many who worked on plantations. Innovation/technology Technology Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war .
In the early half of the 19th century, the differences between the North and South resulted in the Civil War. The major difference between the two was that the North was anti-slavery, and the South was pro-slavery. Since the difference between the two territories was so drastic, it is safe to say that slavery was the overarching cause of the Civil War. The outburst of the Civil War was built on the frustration of the poor treatment of slaves, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In the South, a central reason for slaves was so that they would help maintain a landowner’s planation.
In the years of 1820s through the 1860s, a growing sectional conflict centered around slavery signaled the coming of a war between the north and the south, which almost tore down the union. According to some revisionist historians, Civil War, one of the greatest tragedies in the American history, was absolutely avoidable and resulted merely from “fanaticism and misunderstanding,” along with the failure of the political leaders to compromise; however, this is not the case. Looking back into history, the war was arguably made inevitable by the the cause of slavery. A series of factors in the antebellum age led to the outbreak of Civil War; these factors included social differences, economic issues, as well as political tensions generated by
The years leading up to the Civil War were filled with great tension between the North and the South. Unfortunately after the result of the Kansas- Nebraska Act of 1854 it became clear to many Americans that the tension between the north and the south no longer had a resolution. The defining moment that solidified the war’s inevitability was in 1860. This year is significant because of the Election of 1860 which placed Abraham Lincoln into power. Now that Lincoln was president it gave southern sates a reason to secede.
After the Southern States seceded they formed a government which followed the American Democratic Republic system. They both still divided the government into Legislature, Judicial, and Executive. They still followed the separation of powers in their governments. The economics of each relied heavily on farming, and used similar methods to do so such as, crop rotation, etc… The North may have gone through the industrial revolution, but still farming factored in just as much. In the North they raised wheat and corn primarily while the South relied on cotton and
The Civil War, fought from 1861 to 1865, was known to be one of the most deadly wars. The destruction of the war caused many deaths and also many families to be torn apart. Several people believe that the Civil war could have been avoided and countless lives could have been saved. However, I believe that the Civil War was inevitable because of the different beliefs between the North and the South over economics and slavery. The Civil war was bound to happen because of the dissimilarities between north and south over economics.
Between the 1820s and 1860s, a time period that was greatly influenced by the Industrial Revolution, people were willing to work hard so that they could provide for their families. Slaves were still being used to help develop the United States of America by harvest crops such as cotton, and please their “masters.” were forced to work and help develop the country. Both slavery and industry helped the country grow financially. Slaves had to work harder to meet higher cotton demands. The introduction of the cotton gin also aided in the aided in the rapid production of cotton (PIIP 9).
The Civil War was one of the most defining events in American history and the antebellum years of the 1840’s were filled with turmoil and bloodshed due to wars. The expansion of slavery into Western territories caused a great deal of controversy and increased the sectional tensions. Since drafting of the Constitution, the North and the South had grown further apart in terms of economy, ideology, and society. Slavery became even more divisive when it threatened to expand westward because non-slave holding white settlers did not want to compete with slaveholders in the new territories. The south viewed slavery as essential to their traditional ways but the north opposed its spread.
During the pre-civil war time period— also known as the antebellum years— America experienced a widespread transformation for the sake of its economy. With the booming belief of the Manifest Destiny, America’s constant desire for westward expansion caused disputes between the North and the South regarding the establishment of free states and slave states, which led to certain compromises such as the Missouri Compromise. After the Market Revolution, the North and South used its new gained land to create different means of economic gains; the North became industrialized through manufacturing, while the South became an agricultural industry dependent on cotton. However, as America’s boundaries expanded, tensions between the North and South grew, often leading to compromises in bloodshed. The drastic differences between the two groups eventually transformed America into a divided nation of sectionalism economically, politically, and socially.
The treatment of slaves between the North and the South was drastically different. Slaves in the North typically lived in the same house as their master and worked by themselves, or in small groups (pg. 94). Slaves in the South tended to live in large plantations in which they were housed in plantation outbuildings (pg. 104). The difference between the North and the South in housing and working environment had a direct effect on the integration of African Americans into their new American society. When they were housed in the North with their masters and had limited exposure to other slaves, they tended to adopt the ways of their masters.
There were many differences between the North and the South. For instance, the South were very agricultural as opposed to the North which were industrial. The South used cheap labor in the form of slaves, whereas the North had workers do their jobs in factories at a faster pace. Because of sectionalism, competition between the north and the south began to increase.
The north and the south had always had disagreements but they became more serious as manifest destiny settled in. In document 9 it says “Prior to manifest destiny and the expansion west the politics and economics concerned only the Northern and Southern states. The North had industrialized and in the process changing the way things were made from hand and home-made to machine and factory made. The South was agrarian and a large grower of cotton. With the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 and invention of textile machinery, it created a need for a greater labor force increasing the slave trade in the south.
When it came to morale, the South clearly had the advantage. For the most part, Southerns believed they were fighting to defend their homeland and protect their way of life. However, this was no match to Northern might in every other aspect of the conflict. Compared to the South, the North had a total population advantage of 2.5 to 1; a value of firearms produced at 31 to 1; corn and wheat production at 2.2 to 1; railroad mileage of 2.4 to 1; and a value of manufactured goods at 11 to 1. Thus, brute force in numbers gave the North a distinct advantage.
The Civil War was not inevitable. The Civil War started when many sides and opinions clashed in a debate that caused the deadliest war to Americans in history. The war began when slave states began to spread slavery into the West and increased in the South. This caused riots in the states and political instability when the issue caused the rising of 2 new parties. But was this war avoidable?
