Nick Baxter What caused the Civil War? DBQ The Civil War was caused by three main reasons are economic differences, interpretation of Constitution, and moral beliefs. The North and the South were very different economically. The South had very little industry. It was based off of an agrarian economy (Document B). Slaves picked cotton off the plantation and the farmers sold the cotton to make money (Document A). The Southern weren't able to keep their money without slaves working for free. Slavery was vital in the South for the economy. In the North slavery wasn't practiced. The economy of the North was mainly dependent on industry. People such as Frederick Douglass gave speeches on the issue of slavery. Douglass was a slave himself and from being a slave he told stories about slavery and why it was bad. Douglass speech "What to an American slave is your 4th of July? I answer a day that reveals to him gross injustice and cruelty. To him your celebration is a sham your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless" (Document G). George Fitzhugh claimed that "The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest the freest people in the world." (Document H). John Brown a major person in the fight to end slavery "led a band of 18 men into Virginia to seize the federal arsenal there, distribute the captured arms to slaves in the area, and create a general slave uprising." (Document I).John Brown was executed and the aftermath of his death made tensions rise betwwen the North and South. "I am willing to take chances of…disunion, sooner than submit any longer to Northern insolence and Northern outrage." (Document I). 618,000 people died during the Civil War. Economic differences between the North and the South, interpretations of the Constitution, the thought of slavery was morally wrong what caused the Civil War . The states were suppose to create a union but ended up not happening. I believe that the Civil War was needed slavery completely ended after this change of goverment and the African Americans were
The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.
During the years that led up to the Civil War, the economic system between the North and the South were completely incompatible. The South’s economy was based on agriculture, whereas, the North was depended on manufacturing. The difference between the economic systems significantly created a conflict between the North and the South such as Anti-slavery, pro-slavery, and political demand. The plantation system in the South had rapidly grown, especially with the invention of the cotton gin.
The North was industrial with a better and more reliable economy than the South. All the South had was cotton which was massed produced. Many areas that were used for cotton production also contained dense slave populations. (Document 1). Since both sections had a very diverse means of making income, they began to separate more as time passed.
The Civil War was caused by a combination of the problems of slavery, state’s rights, economic sectional differences, and political blunders and extremism. These factors combined in the 1850s to create a tense environment in which nearly every action could potentially lead to war. While the Civil War was inevitable, it was definitely partially caused by the extremism and poor political leadership of the preceding decade. However, these factors emerged out of cultural, economic, and political differences that were nearly a century in the making. There can be no doubt that extremism over issues of slavery factored into the causes of the Civil War.
During the Mid 1800’s marked a crucial period for our country. It will have a big effect on the development of our country. Throughout this time, our country was split, split into two sections, the North and the South. The Civil war was a war fought against the North and the South, the Union and the Confederates, from 1861-1865.
The Civil War is a very brutal war in American History. One nation fought and killed its own people, and over half a million lives were destroyed and even more families were torn apart. The nation was divided because of slavery. In the North, people wanted to abolish slavery and make free states. In the South, people wanted to keep slavery because it was profitable to their economy and generated a 100% profit on all goods sold.
Also the South used slaves for free labor, and did not have many immigrant workers at all. The economies of both the North and the South were fueled by many different classes of people. In the North, the middle class and lower class workers often did the manufacturing. While in the South indentured servants would work on plantations to grow tobacco, indigo, and cotton which were all very labor intensive. Once these people got out of servitude they would seek to farm the land themselves but often would not have the means to do so which led to a poor class of people who could not even afford slaves.
Notably, economic causes were major predicaments during the American civil war. These were the grounds of the civil war that affected the two regions in many ways. Within time, economic variations developed vastly between the two parts of the two regions. The Southern states depended much on farming than in industrialization. After the invention of the Cotton Gin, there as a greater necessity for persons and property, thus this made cotton the chief year’s produce of the South.
At least six hundred eighteen thousand Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the total even reached seven hundred thousand. The Civil War was caused by a feuding union, that knew it would not survive if things continued on in the devastating ways they were. No decisions could be made, people were arguing and weren’t getting along, and eventually the war began. Two of the most important causes of the Civil War were the Abolition Movement, and the Election of 1860. Although the Abolition Movement happened in the 1830’s, it was still a large cause of the Civil War.
The last main cause of the Civil War was the presidential election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln and John C. Breckinridge were the candidates. Lincoln won the election with more than half of the electoral votes. This caused major controversy. Nobody in the South supported Lincoln and were outraged when he was elected.
The South’s economy was built on agriculture, the soil that they used played a key part because they were able to grow lots of food and cotton. I know this because in Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, the text explains, “Why was there little industry in the South? One reason was because of the boom in cotton sales. Because agriculture was so profitable, Southerners remained committed to farming rather than starting new businesses.” This is a key difference between the North and the South.
The reason why the United States fought in a Civil War was due to the North and the South not being able to reach an agreement on which states should become slave states, and which would remain free states. This Disagreement was caused by the United States gaining several new states and territories from the Mexican-American war. After that war had ended the South feared that the North would vote to ban slavery for good because the land America gained from Mexico gave the north more states. The Civil War was also caused by fights that broke out in the new states and territories between the North and the South. Due to all the fighting in the states and the disagreements in congress, the United States ended up in a Civil War that split the nation
One of the several factors that helped cause the Civil War was the economy at the time. While the economy wasn’t in bad shape, the North and South were different and had very different views and ideas about their futures. The Northern area couldn 't have huge farms like the South. However, they were very diverse in the items they wanted to produce.
the primary causes of the Civil War were the expansion of slavery and sectionalism. Slavery was the main cause of the Civil war. It brought separation of both the north and the south. There were also issues that could have caused the civil war during the Revolutionary era in 1787. Abraham Lincoln becoming president sparked the war in the early years because he was a Republican president who southerners believed posed a threat to slavery, and by the resulting secession of the South.
There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. (Mrs. Wise) "The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the North." Next, sectionalism. Sectionalism-
