Gun control has been an unabating issue of controversy in the U.S. and many other countries. The question at hand is, do guns benefit citizens and or do they harm them more than they help each be safe? The citizens of the United States have lived with firearms in our society since the founding of this great country. It’s part of the American fabric of this great nation that has become engrained in our culture. However, some in our country have begun to question whether owning a firearm should actually be a right. Terrorism, public shootings, and suicides have sparked the fuse that is gun control. Back in the 1700’s the founders of America wrote the Constitution, specifically March 4th 1789. In the constitution they wrote 27 amendments and the first 10 were called the Bill of Rights. Of those 10, the 2nd right is the Right to Bear Arms. Ratified in December 1971, the amendment says: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. One of the founding fathers, James Madison, originally proposed the Second Amendment shortly after the Constitution was officially ratified. He proposed it as a way to provide more power to state militias, which today are considered the National Guard. It was deemed a compromise between Federalists and anti- Federalists. Having just used guns and other arms to ward off the English, the amendment was originally created to give citizens the opportunity to fight back against a tyrannical federal government. People believe that this doesn’t mean anything in today’s standards, they believe the reason this bill was made was to defend and fight against the English. When really it’s about the people being able to fight back against a government that is exercising power in an arbitrary way. If it were possible to add Scotland and Northern Ireland into the figures, however, rest assured that the crime statistics would even be worse.)
