The population in cities grew, and all throughout the country, factories which had production and manufacturing capabilities that could not even be imagined decades ago sprung up. This was an era noted for the widening social and economic gap between the powerful and the powerless. Political life during the Gilded Age was shaped by three main factors: the balance of power between Democrats and Republicans, the high level of public participation in everyday politics, and the often corrupt alliance between business and political leaders at all levels of government. The Gilded Age truly revolutionized American consumerism and commerce. This change, both positive and negative, was due to the extreme desire of businessmen and investors to achieve maximum profit. During the Chicago World Fair, at least temporarily, the economy boomed as investors sought to create new hotels, restaurants, and other public venues that would profit off of the large amount of visitors. Investors and businessmen constantly thought of new ways and strategies to attract consumers and more importantly, capital. A clear example of the new strategies employed by investors was the selling of water from Waukesha at the World Fair.
Following the end of the Civil War, industrialists’ new inventions and the accessibility to natural resources created an industrial boom. Economic growth spurred for the industrialists; however, growth came with huge risks for industrial workers. A factor that contributed to America’s astonishing economic growth in the late 19th century was the conditions of labor that were dangerous to health and the increasing exploitation of industrial workers. Life in the other half during the Gilded Age resulted in unsanitary work and clustered living conditions. In hopes of having a temporary escape from the grueling workplace, people incorporated the use of past timers to help cope during the Gilded Age.

Through the process of industrialization and urbanization, America was able to transition from a small agrarian economy to an industrial economy that doubled. When I visualize America without the positive or negative effects of the Gilded Age, I see a small country that is isolated from others, with a poor economy that is unprofitable and weak. I imagine a country that is dominated by one race and restricted from the power of other countries. As you can infer, I firmly believe that the Gilded Age played an active role in helping America become a world power. It offered several opportunities for America to grow as a nation through its economic, industrial, and social changes.
