In the play Julius Caesar by, Julius Shakespeare, both Antony and Brutus give speeches after Caesar died. Brutus tells the people that it was for the good of Rome and had to be done. Brutus also backs up his claim by giving examples of how “ambitious” Caesar was. Antony on the other hand wanted to persuade the Roman people that what Brutus and the conspirators was wrong and they need to seek revenge. Both Antony and Brutus use Ethos, Logos, and Pathos, which are tools used in speaking or writing to persuade people. Ethos is an appeal based on the character of the speaker, Logos is an appeal based on logic or reasoning, and Pathos is an appeal based on emotions. Antony's speech is better than Brutus's because he is more persuasive and is more …show more content…
This shows that Caesar wasn't ambitious and trustworthy. Antony uses his emotions to also win the people's trust. Antony is talking about the emotional story of how Caesar was murdered. He brings the people to a sad state and the Romans start to respect Antony more. Brutus thought that his reasoning behind the assassination of Caesar would be enough to persuade that the killing of Caesar was the right thing to do. Brutus only relied on his honorability and thought that would be enough, but it …show more content…
Brutus uses ethos the most in his speech, he was considered very honorable by the Romans. Since he was very honorable everyone believed that anything that came out of his mouth had to be true. Brutus had an easier time to win over the people of Rome. Antony is constantly questioning Brutus. Antony targets the credibility and character of Brutus when he says; “And Brutus is an honourable man.” (III.ii.1631). Antony repeats that phrase when he wants to prove that they are not as honorable as they seem. Antony gives an example of how the conspirators are doing something dishonorable. He tries to persuade the crowd that their interpretation of the conspirators may be wrong, and that they weren't honorable men at all. Antony finally persuades the crowd without saying what the conspirators did
The play by shakespeare called julius caesar was about the story of julius caesar. The story of Julius caesar was that he was stabbed to death by the whole senate. At one part in the play two people named Mark Antony and Brutus started to argue and try to persuade the people in some way by using different rhetorical techniques. Brutus used pathos to persuade the people that he chose right and he was still honorable and caesar deserved to die, but brutus mourned for his death just like the people. Antony used a logos and pathos technique to persuade the people that brutus was bad and that julius did nothing wrong, by using examples Antony made a valid point.
In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Marc Antony’s funeral speech for Caesar’s death is more successful than Brutus’ funeral speech because Antony uses verbal irony and pathos instead of gravitas or logos. In his speech, Brutus uses gravitas or honor while Marc Antony knows the general will of the Plebeians. Antony uses verbal irony in his speech, whereas Brutus uses a straightforward, 1-dimensional rhetoric. Lastly, Brutus uses logos in his speech, while Antony uses pathos to win over the Plebeians. In the end, Antony’s use of verbal irony and pathos in his speech is more effective in winning over the Plebeians to avenge Caesar’s death than that of Brutus.’
No matter what the circumstances, people always look for someone to blame. When Caesar was murdered the Plebeians needed someone to blame for what happened. Despite Brutus’s honor and respect among the Romans, Antony gave the more convincing speech at Caesar’s funeral by having an emotional impact on the Romans, therefore convincing them that an injustice had been done. Brutus first spoke at Caesar’s funeral with the goal of justifying his actions to the plebeians. Out of the three rhetorical appeals Brutus used Logos the least.
The motivation behind Antony’s actions was completely selfish as he wanted to defend and avenge Caesar, gain power by giving himself credibility as Caesar’s right hand man, and unleash utter chaos in Rome by invoking civil war. Antony’s speech was able to completely reverse the effects that Brutus’ speech had simply because people care more about what agitates their emotions, rather than what logically makes more sense to
In Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, portrays the assassination of Roman ruler Julius Caesar, the aftermath of his death and the eventual death of the assassins, including Brutus and Cassius. In Act 1, Scene 2, funeral speeches are being given by Mark Anthony and Marcus Brutus after Caesar’s death; although Brutus’ use of ethos was more compelling than Anthony’s, ultimately Anthony’s speech was more persuasive than Brutus’ because of his impressive use of pathos and logos. One type of rhetorical strategy used in speeches and discussion is ethos, or an appeal to ethics. Brutus uses ethos for the majority of his arguments. An example of this is at the very end of his speech.
The people of Rome were easily manipulated through Brutus’s use of logos, but were just as easily turned against him through Antony’s pathos. Throughout the speeches of Brutus and Antony, they both address the people of Rome to consume the rightfulness of power in Rome. In Brutus’s speech he uses ethos. “ Believe me for mine honor, and have respected to mine honor that you may believe” (What is the basic difference).
In the art of persuasion, there are many tactics that people use to convey or persuade people into getting what they want. There are several tactics used to achieve this, but the main ones that we see being used today are classical appeals like pathos (emotional), ethos (authority), and logos (logical). These appeals have shown up in many types of literature for a character to get their point across, but one of the best examples is in William Shakespeare's “Julius Caesar”. These appeals are used in two great speeches that are told by Brutus and Antony. Brutus’s speech uses ethos and pathos to get the crowd to agree to his killing of Caesar, while Antony uses the power of pathos and logos to refute what Brutus said to convince the crowd to follow him in his
This is evident from Brutus’ overuse of logic and under use of emotion to persuade the crowd. Whereas, Antony largely appealed to emotion and shocking the crowd to make them love Caesar again and hate Brutus. Most of the ethos used by the speakers
The words that decided Rome Have you ever killed your best friend because you thought they were too ambitious? The tragedy of Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare takes place before the fall of Rome and tells a story about a group of noble senators that despise a monarchy. During this time a honorable senator named Cassius convinces his friend Brutus to form a conspiracy group to rebel Julius Caesar's absolute monarchy. Soon after they form a conspiracy group and assassinate Caesar they are confronted by the Roman people. Brutus’ and Antony’s speeches to the Roman people and how it influenced the rest of the play and characters.
By doing this he appeals to the Romans and gets an emotional response. Lastly, Antony states in his speech “ For Brutus, as you know, was Caesar’s angel. Judge, O gods, how dearly Caesar loved him.” This is an example of ethos, because it makes the audience think about Brutus what type of person he
In Antony’s speech to the people, he speaks about Caesar over his dead body. His words make the commoners feel something, as opposed to Brutus,
The appeals in Antony’s speech were persuasively better than the use of them in Brutus’s speech. Marc Antony uses all three appeals in his speech to make a very sturdy argument. An example of logos in his speech is when he states, “He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?” This speech is Antony stating facts of Caesar’s work which proves that he is not ambitious and does not deserve to be killed. Antony also uses ethos and pathos when he says, “He was my friend, faithful and just to me.”
In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar one of the main characters Caesar is killed in Scene 3 act 2.Then Brutus and Antony both give speeches about how bad they feel. Brutus gives a good speech by using all three of the rhetorical appeals to persuade the crowd to want to listen to what he say by using logos, ethos, pathos to his advantage. Brutus gives a better speech that draws the audience attention,Antony not as much. Therefor here are some very valid points on why Brutus’s speech used the Rhetorical Appeals better.
Brutus and Antony speak in Caesar's funeral, they use ethos, pathos, and logos to get their point across. With the use of the pathos, logos, and ethos Brutus gets the attention of the commoners. He asks the commoners if what he is going to say is going to offend them, if it does he asks of them to leave there and they all tell Brutus no. Antony speaks before Brutus and gets his point across but fails at his point and just gets the crowd thinking. Brutus than uses his speech techniques to win over the commoner’s ears to listen to him.
Marcus Junius Brutus and Mark Antony both deliver speeches to justify the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE and both use Logos and Ethos to convince the Roman citizens to join their sides. Both sides deliver their speeches with vehemence and start by elucidating why Brutus killed Caesar to begin with, why Antony’s desire for revenge is justified, and what the future of Rome will be because of his death. Antony teases the citizens of Rome with the will of Caesar that he holds in hand and claims it will dishonor Brutus and the other conspirators and is also one of his vital uses of Ethos in his speech. Most of the citizens, if not all of them side with Antony and will most likely help him accede to a great title of power in the future and also betray Brutus because of what Antony has them believe, i.e. an ignoble assassin. Brutus and Antony 's speeches were both compelling, although Antony´s speech was more successful, but it is because he was able to manipulate the people of Rome with
