A group of people needs a leader to keep order. Whether this leader would be good or bad, they are who the group revolves around. A good leader must keep order and lead their group to success. Keep in mind that no leaders are perfect. Each will have their strengths and weaknesses. This is the case within the real world and Lord of the Flies. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, a group of boys was stranded on an island with no adults around. As a group, they needed a leader to guide them to rescue so two boys, Ralph and Jack, volunteered themselves to become the leader. Both leaders had entirely opposite goals and ideals. Both also were not always correct. However, the mistakes committed were more evident in Jack’s rule due to the fact that he ruled as a dictator, also had misperception of priorities, acted violently towards another group and his members and was power hungry. Every leader, whether they are good or bad leads their group differently. They each have their own style they think is best. Though Jack was a successful leader, Jack’s style of leadership and his ideals as a leader are “wrong”. Keep in mind that “right” and “wrong” is subjective. Jack leads as a dictator which limits the rights of his members and as a group of boys striving to survive on the island, the members of the group should be part in the decision making. Jack’s main goal on the island is to sustain a living on the island and not to survive which is “wrong”. Though “wrong” as mentioned before, is subjective, Ralph’s goal is the most appropriate as it is part of the human instinct. The cause of the fall of Ralph’s tribe was because the littleuns found Jack’s group fun but it is mainly because of the fear of the beast as the littleuns believed that Jack could protect
How could Ralph and Jack’s ways of leadership be explained to someone else? Something that i have noticed is that Ralph’s way of leading the boys is more of a democracy, when the way that Jack likes to lead is more of a dictatorship. This is because Jack is more punishing and demanding. He wants to be a leader of the boys, and when he doesn’t get what he wants, he has violent
The Ojibwa Parable is a myth describing the existence of two “wolves” that govern our body: the Good one and Evil one. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack clash constantly over maintaining a mimicry of a proper English societal structure or discarding it in favor of a more wild and chaotic way of life. Golding uses Ralph to represent the civilization the boys left behind; for all intents and purposes, Ralph represents nurture. Throughout the book he is swayed by the call of the wild, but remains tethered to the idea of rescue and upholding the societal standards previously taught to him. ‘Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh.
Ralph made the suggestion of needing a leader for the time being, and what exactly they needed to be able to survive. As Ralph showed characteristics of a great leader, although he lacks the ability to actually lead the group of rambunctious boys. Ralph does not constantly demand for the other boys respect and to see if orders were followed through, instead he whines and complains to the boys that they are not doing all what they are told, and are not doing them right. “all at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy.
