The Medias’ Positive Influence on Nursing As far back as elementary school we are asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up;” and each year on Halloween children dress up as their heroes in hopes that one-day they will be just like them. Most often a child wants to be what they see in books and most importantly on television. The media influences us at all ages. The media has the ability to reach millions of people providing a positive impact on the image of nursing. A Positive Perception The media plays a major role in the way we perceive professions and it has an impact on the decisions we make in regards to our own career choices. Nursing in particular has been seen in such shows as “Greys Anatomy” and “Nurse Jackie;” and despite their sometimes less than accurate portrayals, shows like these positively influence the perception of nurses. “The public has its perceptions of nurses in mind, and they are able to separate what they see on television and what they hold and believe about nursing and their personal experiences” (Wood). Christina Hawthorne is the Chief Nursing Officer of Richmond Trinity Hospital in the first season of the television series Hawthorne. This character contains many exemplary characteristics any credible nurse should possess, and she loves her job despite all the long hours she puts in. Christina Hawthorne is not only exceedingly passionate about her job, but also empathetic towards her patients, knowledgeable about symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments, interpersonal with her patients, and very dedicated to her profession. Her character has made me realize how crucial nursing is, and what kind of person it takes to be a nurse. The purpose of the NLN is to support the education of nurses, provide testing services and grants for research, all with the purpose of achieving excellence in nursing (National League for Nursing [NLN], 2013). This organization impacts nursing by supporting nurse education in the development of nursing faculty. Additionally, they encourage research to advance nursing education through evidence-based teaching practices, and the instruction of nurses (NLN, 2013). Many felt students needed a better understanding about the reality of nursing and nurses needed a stronger voice. One mistake can be caught on camera by those who are distrustful of nurses. Overall, Fowler article was extremely unsuccessful at pusadering her audience to take action and become a part of policy making in healthcare because of her structural errors and usage of irrelevant sources in a failed attempt to build credibility with her audience. Fowler’s structural weaknesses in her organization and thesis statement was not persuasive, thus leaving her readers confused. Fowler first begins her article with background information about her topic, stating the history of Nursing. She outlines extensive details about the founding of the code of ethics for three paragraphs, which was not necessary for her argument.

Synthesis Essay: Influence of Media on Women I believe that media does have a positive effect on women, but the role models and ideals that media portrays are not realistic or achievable. Because media has such a large influence on everyday life, it holds an equally large sway over us. When the protagonist of a tv show acts a certain way in a particular situation, we are more likely to imitate such actions if we find ourselves in similar circumstances(Abrams).This constant influence of seemingly flawless characters has made us forget that such role models are supposed to be examples on how to live or act, not the sole authority that so many treat them as today.
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need.
