They crashed to the floor, shattering and sending bits of white china under the tables. The boy stood there, dazed and frightened, holding the empty tray in his hand. The whistles and catcalls from the customers (the cries of "hey, there go the profits!" ... "Mazeltov!" ... and "well, he didn't work here very long ..." which invariably seems to follow the breaking of glass or dishware in a public restaurant) all seemed to confuse him..' When the owner carne to see what the excitement was about, the boy cowered as if he expected to be struck and threw up his hands as if to ward off the blow. "All right! All right, you dope," shouted the owner, "don't just stand there! Get the broom and sweep that mess up. A broom. , . a broom, you idiot! It's in the kitchen. Sweep up all the pieces." The boy saw that he was not going to be punished. His frightened expression disappeared and he smiled and hummed as he came back with the broom and amusing themselves at his expense. "Here, sonny, over here there's a nice piece behind you ..." "C'mon, do it again .. ," "He's not so dumb. It is not only important to the story but important to everyone in the world. Without confidence Charlie let himself believe that he would never be smart. He always assumed that he failed a test. "I had a test today. I think I faled it. and I think that maybe now they wont use me". Confidence may be a key to being smart. It may not be a proven fact yet but when it is, you’ll find out that the confidence is your key to success. When Charlie became smart he wanted to finish the research that his doctors had started, I personally think that some confidence could have helped Charlie stay smart. I would tell you what Charlie discovered but that would be a spoiler alert and I refuse to do
Penland "Flowers for Algernon" is the short story of a man named Charlie Gordon. Charlie is a 37 year old man. He is not very smart. He has an IQ lower than 70, but he wants to be smart like the rest of the people in his life. He doesn’t want to be dumb anymore.
“ I curse myself for losing control and creating a scene”, Charlie Gordon wanting to be smart but, always thinking low about himself and was tired of everyone making fun of him. Charlie Gordon had the chance to have a surgery that would make his mental abilities increase and he would be a lot smarter than he was before. I am arguing that the operation Charlie got for his intelligence was bad for him for some reasons. One reason that will help me prove that the operation was bad for Charlie is that he never believed in himself and doubts himself, he had little hope. In the text it says,”I had a test today.
“I want to be smart”(Keyes 1), and “I hope they use me”(Keyes 1), were things Charlie said in the beginning of the story, so it proves he did not think about the precautions. Charlie only wanted to do this in hopes to be smart and smart only, he did not know what he was getting himself into. Others may say that Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur told Charlie all the results, though while all the conditions were stated, they all went in one ear and out the other, Charlie only had one thing on his mind. Charlie wrote “ He rote somthing down on a paper and I got skared of faling the test”(Keyes 1). So, is only worry is not getting chosen, not death, not amnesia, he only wants to be smart.
All stories, even bestsellers, owe their wide-ranging success to their character and its personality; Daniel Keyes’ “Flowers for Algernon” is an example of its importance. The novel is a struggle between Charlie Gordon—the main character and protagonist—and the outside world. Charlie Gordon—mainly referred to as Charlie—is a mentally impaired man who strives to do better and become smarter, and the perfect opportunity arises when a chance to go under an operation that will increase his intelligence. This develops the making of a great story; however, if Charlie is not bold or pronounced enough, he loses his individuality, and, in turn, the amount of interest a reader will harness. In “Flowers for Algernon,” Charlie’s mindset and thought process also introduce antagonists Joe Carp and Frank Reilly, both of whom were his coworkers, and they also have unique mindsets.
In the short story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes the author writes the story in journal entries which, when reading exposes charlie for a person who has a learning disability, lacks in intelligence, and is mentally retarded. The author spells things wrong on purpose to show us that Charlie spells and writes like a kid in grade school. An example of this is shown in most journal entries like the one on March sixth stating “I was skared even tho I had my rabits foot in my pockit because when I was a kid I always faled tests in school

Flowers for Algernon tells us a story to give us an experience through many different progress reports and shows us how to learn and grow. Charlie Gordon, from Daniel Keyes’ short story “Flowers for Algernon,” should not have had the experimental operation to increase his intelligence. He would have lived longer, would have still been happy, and they didn’t follow the Scientific Method. First, he is happy, but when he gets smart. Later he realizes that his “friends” aren’t really his friends. “I was laughing at myself”(331).
Being mentally challenging would be hard not for one person but also for the people that help help them with their everyday life. Other people who are not mentally challenging can never understand how hard it would to be mentally challenging or work with someone who is. In the novel, Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes demonstrates that nothing is going to be perfect in this world and all there is to do is deal with it and make and live life to the fullest. He shows that changing Charlie 's intelligence was not really worth the cost of experimenting, time and effort put into this operation. It was not meant to be for Charlie to be a genius.
Flowers for Charlie “Those who use others are stupid but those who are used are even more stupid” (Internet). Charlie Gordon, the main character in Daniel Keyes’ book, Flowers for Algernon, ended up being in worse condition after undergoing a surgical procedure that was supposed to heighten his intelligence. Furthermore, the scientists unfortunately did not use ethics or take enough care in treating Charlie causing his now worse condition to be their own fault. Their greed led them to abuse and take advantage of Charlie, a very gullible and persuadable because of his low intelligence, and their mistakes led Charlie to his death, the ultimate sacrifice.
He experiences, psychotic behavior, convulsions, paranoia, and more, Leonard eventually goes back to the catatonic state he was in towards the beginning of the film and eventually passes away. As Well as in Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon after the surgery Charlie was using big words and, his IQ was very high, but he started to rapidly decline towards the end of the story and eventually says he is "going away" which can be inferred as the after life and/or death. It can be understood that although the results of both treatments were good at first, the long term effects were not well known and neither of characters had good long term outcomes. A third connection between Algernon's Flowers and the film's awakening is the similarity of medical ethics issues. On page 270 of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Doctors Nemur and Strauss fail to tell Charlie what the operation is, nor does Charlie have any sort of ability to understand what is happening to him.
The setting of “Flowers for Algernon” takes place in New York during the 1960s where people with mental disabilities were treated unfairly. Even though Charlie and Max persevered through similar situations, Charlie had a different personality. Unlike Max, Charlie was innocent, extroverted, and naive. We know this because Keyes presented in the book, “Everybody laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when he is potted”(Keyes 40). With Charlie being outspoken, he was able express in a positive manner what he was feeling and believed.
