There may be multiple people that play a role in the death of Romeo and Juliet; however, Mercutio should be assigned the blame. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by the famous playwright William Shakespeare. The play is about two star-crossed lovers who meet at a party and instantly fall in love but due to many complications, they have to keep their love a secret. The two decide to secretly marry but when Lord Capulet finds Juliet a husband, Romeo and Juliet are forced to think of schemes to protect their marriage. In the end, due to their unlucky situation and the interference of others, the two lovers commit suicide because they cannot be with each other. Tybalt is still bitter about the Montagues crashing the party and he goes looking for a fight. Romeo tries to keep the peace by responding to Tybalt's request to fighting saying, "The reason that I have to love thee/ doth much excuse the appertaining rage" (3.1.59-60). Tybalt continues to poke for a fight and Mercutio steps in and begins to fight. It is obvious that Romeo does not want a fight to take place because while the fight is ongoing he is trying to stop them. After Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo goes after Tybalt and ends up killing him. When the prince finds out, Romeo is banished and this leads to the final scheme that pushes Romeo and Juliet to commit Suicide. This is the fault of Mercutio because it is not his own fight and even when his friend makes it clear that he didn't want a fight Mercutio still went after Tybalt. When Romeo sees his friend dying he has to avenge him which leads to trouble. There are multiple people who are to blame. However, Mercutio is the most responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. He got Romeo to go to the dance, which is where he met Juliet.
Because of this, Romeo intervenes, and because of the intervention, Mercutio gets stabbed. Although Romeo did not want to fight, it was do or die. Romeo fights Tybalt and gets his revenge. Because of this, he was exiled and unable to pursue his relationship with Juliet, ending in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he married them in secret, failed to deliver Romeo the letter pertaining to Juliet’s staged death, and left Juliet in the Capulet tomb alone.

At the feast when Tybalt sees Romeo he is determined to kill him, as Romeo sees Juliet and falls in love with her. The fight between Mercutio and Tybalt started when Tybalt abused Romeo which enraged Mercutio, as result Mercutio was killed by Tybalt during a sword fight Mercutio’s death angered Romeo which ended in Tybalt’s death by Romeo’s hand. “I deg for your justice which thou, Prince must give; Romeo slew Tybalt Romeo must not live” said lady Capulet. (Romeo and Juliet, act 3, scene 1, page 66). Mercutio’s death by Tybalt’s hand, led to his fight with Romeo which influence his own death.
Mercutio is the one who persuaded Romeo to go to the Capulets masquerade ball. Even though Romeo had a gut feeling that going to the party would lead to his death. Which it did since Mercutio was persistent and made Romeo go to the ball. This lead to Romeo meeting Juliet which eventually lead to their deaths. Mercutio is also to blame for his aggressive behaviour.
In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo does kill Tybalt but who is really to blame? Mercutio is minding his own business while Tybalt insults him and starts a fight. Romeo may have done the deed of killing him but Tybalt brought Romeo to that point. Since he killed Mercutio, It drove Romeo to such anger. And then ended with the death of Tybalt.
From the series of events that took part in the play, Mercutio is seen as the root of the problem. Even though Mercutio is Romeo's best friend, the cause of Romeo and Juliet's death is Mercutio because of the way he handles the situation of knowing what Romeo and Juliet are going through.
Tybalt and Mercutio have a little banter before Romeo enters the scene. While Tybalt wants to fight Romeo, Romeo does not want to fight him because they are now cousins by marriage. Mercutio gets mad and furious because of all the insults Tybalt is saying. Mercutio and Tybalt fight and Romeo gets in the way, trying to stop the fight. Tybalt goes under his arm and stabs Mercutio.
