The Crumbling of the Monroe Doctrine: U.S. Shift in Foreign Policy
When the United States first became a country, its founders had just gained independence from Great Britain. During his presidency, James Monroe delivered a speech to Congress known as the Monroe Doctrine. This unofficial promise and warning to other countries around the world accurately expressed the views of most Americans at the time of the beginning of U.S.history in relation to foreign affairs. It built the foundation of how U.S. foreign policy would be based on the idea of isolationism, or not interfering with other countries. During the time period between 1877 to 1977, the United States changed its role in the world from being an

U.S. involvement in the Philippines started with the Spanish-American War. The war began when the U.S.S. Maine blew up near Cuba. It was later discovered that the explosion was most likely caused by an accident. Nevertheless, the United States declared war on Spain, thinking that the destruction of the U.S.S. Maine was caused by Spain. Although President McKinley used this incident as a reason for intervening in the conflict between Spain and its colonies, many Congressmen felt the United States had a more important reason for invading. Senator Henry Teller stated that he believed the United States should go to war with the Spanish to assist in Cuba’s revolution from Spain.2 The Monroe Doctrine clearly stated that the United States, as part of its policy for isolationism, would not interfere with any European colonies already established,3 and since the United States was interfering with Cuba, one of Spain’s colonies, the United States was breaking the Monroe Doctrine. It could be argued that since Congressmen assumed that the Spanish had already attacked the United States first,4 the war was justifiable. However, the United States military didn’t only fight the Spanish in Cuba; the war also took place in the Philippines, another one of Spain’s colonies. The Philippines was not in the Western Hemisphere, and so if the U.S. …show more content…
Instead of respecting its policies regarding isolation, the United States kept its rewards from the war.5 According to the British Naval Reports on the Philippines at that time, the United States fought in the Philippines to “[destroy] the Spanish fleet.”6 The report, created by the navy of a neutral country, stated that the United States actually had secret motivations to take and keep control of the Philippines. One of the motivations, the report said, was that the United States wanted to use the Philippines as a location to become trading partners with China.7 This would economically benefit the United States, so it does make sense why government officers wanted to take over the Philippines. However, interfering with other countries for financial gain is not a characteristic of a country practicing isolationism, and that is exactly what the United States did. Since the Monroe Doctrine only allowed for U.S. intervention in the Western Hemisphere, which is not complete isolationism in itself, the United States clearly did not follow the Monroe Doctrine in this case, and therefore did not follow normal U.S. beliefs. Additionally, the report interpreted this “annexation” of the Philippines as “the beginning of official American involvement in Asia and the Pacific.”8 This meant that naval officers from Great Britain recognized that the United States had expanded
Differing ideas of national identity shaped views of United States overseas expansion in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a great extent due to the presence of segregation amongst the African American population, acquisition of the Philippines, and encouragement of violence as a result of the Spanish-American War. Imperialism is the policy of taking control over countries around the world for political and economic gain. Since its formation, the United States has imperialized several countries, including the Philippines, Cuba, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Imperialism was incorporated during the Spanish-American War, a four-month battle between the United States and Spain. Then, chaos induced after the explosion of the USS Maine in Cuba.
The Monroe Doctrine was an expression of nationalism as it declared the United States’s intention to stay out of European affairs and it forced Europe to not interfere in the Americas. Firstly, the United States declared it would stay out of European affairs, wars, and conflicts, signaling an inward focus. However, the United States also threatened Europe when it declared it would go to war in case any European nation attempted further colonization or interference in the Western hemisphere. Metaphorically speaking, the US built a wall between the Americas and Europe, impeding any military or political interference. Even though the US did not have the power to enforce this at the time, it was carving its path to dominate nations in Latin America
The United States wanted to establish its own nation, remaining a colony of themselves. The fifth President of United States, James Monroe, delivered a speech on opposing further colonization of the North and South America. His words allowed United States officially adopt isolationism with minor variation of outer influence. Monroe was successful in presenting his purpose through defensive tone, argumentative diction, imagery, and his use of logos to support his arguments.
The united states had achieved lots of power, economically and politically. After we gained power of a number of small countries we couldn 't give them back so we demanded use of land for naval bases and resources. we educated the filipinos, uplifted and civilized them the best we could to help them and us. After the civil war the united stated need economic growth.
The first reason is the main reason the U.S joined the Spanish-American war is territory and resources. According to a document by Jason Colby, Spain took control of Cuba, the Philippines Islands, and Puerto Rico. The U.S was worried that
Even though, during war the United States rather argued it’s nobleness in world matters, protecting Cubans and Filipinos from Spaniards. An exemplar of this is America issuing the Teller Amendment; which declared that Americans had no interest in taking political control in Cuba. But, later the Teller Amendment was proved wrong by the Platt Amendment, which stated that; Cuba would never sign a treaty with foreign power, impairing it’s independence, let America maintain independence and order in the country, and the United States maintain Guantanamo Bay a permanent base. Therefore, the U.S. controlling Cuba’s policies. The Filipinos as well are another exemplar of it, during the Spanish-American war they were offered independence but, later on were taken as United States territory until, the Filipino Revolution led to independence.
They saw it as the “perfect stepping-stones” trade with China and the rest of Asia. American business men felt it was necessary for the government to show some authority and capitalize on this opportunity. American saw Manila as their
American wanted to control the Philippines government to get closer to China for trading. Another interest is access to trading. According to Document 1, “Process of three hundred years of superstition in religion, dishonesty in dealing, disorder in habits of industry, and cruelty, caprice, and corruption in government. It is barely possible that 1,000 men in all archipelago are capable of self-government.” US President, McKinley believed they couldn’t govern themselves against other nations.
Nostra heard about the Monroe Doctrine and had some idea to change it up. Ithad no more of it to be used solely for economic dominance and imperialism by the United States, but in conjunction with its twenty neighbors, to defend the collective security of the Western Hemisphere. But changing the Monroe Doctrine only changed some of its power. Still, the Monroe Doctrine could still have advance American economic and political interests in the Western
Imperialism drove the world, from the Roman Empire, to America in the early 1900’s. The US imperialized nations to give them peace, gain their natural resources, and protect them. But not all things imperialism are good. When the US imperialized some nations, it limited their ability to govern and protect themselves. But the US has more experience doing so in a modern world, and would ultimately benefit them.
The Monroe Doctrine was a speech given in 1823 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States, to the U.S. Congress concerning European presence in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe was becoming continuously concerned about European influence in the region. While the primary audience for this message was Congress, the intended audience was all European powers, including Russia, and Latin America. The events in Latin America before and after the Spanish-American War will be used as an example of the imperial reach by the U.S. The United States, ironically, became an imperial power through its mission outlined in the Monroe Doctrine to end European colonialism and imperialism.
In 1899, the United States annexed the Philippines after a short but bloody war with Spain. These rich, plentiful islands full of resources were in great demand. The U.S. saw the Philippines; fighting against Spain so like them when they were rebelling, and decided to step in and aid ‘the spirit of 1776’ (Doc. A). However, the question still remains: should the United States have annexed the Philippines?
This explosion finally made the Americans want to go to war, and so the United States decided to get involved. On April 25, 1898, the United States officially went to war with Spain to help Cuba. Instead of the battles being fast and right away, the United States was hesitant and patient. After multiple articles from Hearst and Pulitzer exposing the horrors in Cuba and the rumors about the explosion of the U.S. Mains, America finally got involved in the Spanish American
COLLAPSE President James Monroe wrote the "Monroe" doctrine to solidify the US independance and distance itself from european powers they would not interfeared with european wars and would remain peaceful to protect its own borders. The doctrone was written while Portragal was getting its independace from Spain and President James Monroe noted the distance between Spain and colonized Mexico and he said it was obvious that Spain could never hold it in the doctrine Monroe stated that our southern bretheren if left to themselves what of adopted the doctrine of their own accord President James Monroe said to leave other colonized lands alone so they can hope to claim independance and weaken european powers. They relate to early revolution and
This policy had a lot of influences and affects. The Monroe Doctrine had a lot of positive effects on the United States and Britain. It basically helped shape America as it is today. The Monroe doctrine states "In the wars of the European powers in matters relating to themselves we have never taken any part, nor does it comport with our policy to do so.
