WHY IS OBESITY A CRISIS FOR NHS? When the NHS was established in 1948, of its founding principles was that it should Improve health and prevent diseases as well as providing treatment for those who are sick. There are huge ranges of factors that affect health. Health can be affected by genetic, gender, lifestyle, behaviour, housing environment, food policy and many more. One of the problems facing the NHS today is obesity. Obesity is a common problem in the UK that’s estimated to affect around 1 in every 4 adults and round 1 in every 5 children aged 10 and 11, (Nation Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017-2018). It is a major public health problem, both internationally and within the UK. There are many risk factors for overweight …show more content…
In a world where we cannot not live without food, it has proven that food is the necessity for a healthy living. In as much as food is good for the body, excess eating of food has been a major problem around the globe and hence affecting the living welfare of people. Obesity is at high risk and a lot of us don’t consider that as a problem but gaining weight. For one to be effective, it requires good eating health habits and not excess eating that result in obesity. According to World Health Organization, “obesity can be defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight and over 30 is obese” (WHO June 2021). As most people are becoming obese this is putting National Health Services (NHS) on a crisis. Based on this finding one can argue that the NHS is on its …show more content…
It begins with each one of us taking an initiative in doing the right thing when it comes to eating healthier. We need to follow the procedures of a healthy living in our homes but also raise awareness in our society for a healthy living. We can create a better future from one generation to the other and we can become effective citizens if we are doing the right things to survive and making sure our homes are healthy, our workplaces are healthy, and we will end up becoming a society that is free from obesity. A free obese world begins with you and I taking that step of eating right. REFERENCES 1. Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
According to the most recent studies, more than thirty two percent of the adults in America are obese. This is an obscene number when you consider that this equals over eighty million Americans. Add to this, more than two thirds of the adults in the United States are overweight, and on their way to becoming obese. Researchers have recognized that this growing trend in overweight and obese citizens is not specific to any one gender, race, education level, or income level. It is an epidemic that is affecting every type of person in the
Excessive weight has been blamed for thousands premature deaths each year in England and calculated to reduce life expectancy by an average of nine years. According to the Department of Health, direct costs caused by obesity are estimated to be £4.2 billion per year and forecast to more than double by 2050 if we carry on as we are. I believe politicians are just starting to see the effects due to the cost on the NHS this is why they have made a move and decided to do something as it is starting to affect our economic stability, which can lead to a dozen more
History, Depth, and Breadth In 2008 Healthy People 2020 introduced the leading health indicator NWS-9 Reduce the proportion of adults who are obese. This measure falls under the health topic on nutrition, physical activity and obesity. The World Health Organization describes obesity as the ‘epidemic of the 21st Century’ (Specchia et al., 2014, p. 255). The obesity rate had doubled up to 33.9% from 1980 to 2008 when the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 released their leading health indicator on adult obesity (Specchia et al., 2014, p. 255).
Most people understand the condition has to having an unhealthy body weight and lack an adequate amount of daily physical activity. Currently, there has been a trend in the number of individuals who are affected by obesity. Data shows that in the United States alone that about 13.7 million children are considered obese (American Obesity Foundation, n.d.). On a global scale, data has shown that about 500 million adults are defined as obese (Obesity Prevention Source, 2016). This data is alarming because of the great number of individuals who are affected by this condition.
Introduction Obesity is a significant public health issue in the United States. Obesity in Americans continues to rise as the years go on. It is causing a countless amount of issues with loss of productivity, higher healthcare costs, and so many health issues and risks when it comes to the people that are obese. It is an issue in America that is pushed away and overlooked. This is a very serious issue that needs to be fixed and addressed before it is too late.
Obesity is a serious medical condition requiring extensive treatment to lower the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Although obesity is shown to increase mortality rate with associated detrimental disorders, one in three people in the United States is clinically obese (“Overweight and Obesity Statistics”) and susceptible to life-threatening repercussions. Obesity is clinically diagnosed with a body mass index (BMI) of a score of 30 or greater in reference to an individual’s mass compared to their height. The populace of the United States is becoming more susceptible to obesity with the rate of obese individuals more than doubling since 1962 (“Overweight and Obesity Statistics”). Obesity is a prevalent health issue in the United States and will continue to worsen unless serious action is taken.
These health risks are becoming more relevant in recent years as The Childhood Obesity Epidemic becomes greater and more children are being affected by obesity, this can be clearly comprehended by the studies and surveys taken on children in the USA - the number one country for obesity- and New Zealand - the third ranking country for obesity. Studies show, 1/3 young people in USA are overweight or obese as the percentage of obese children 6-11 years old increased from 7% in 1980 to 18% in 2012 while obese 12-19 year olds increased from 5% to 21% over the same
Also examined and explained in-depth, are the underlying causes for the increased percentages of people who are considered to be overweight/obese. The authors further develop their purpose by explaining that the causes of the rising numbers are a result of people consuming higher calorie dense foods while decreasing the amount of time spent participating in physical activity. They agree that the recent rise in obesity numbers is linked to several factors that can have an effect on eating and physical activity habits. For instance, the environment in which people reside can have an effect on the amount of physical activity they partake in and the food environment can have an effect on food consumption (Morrill 357). The use of tables comparing previously recorded data about the amount of individuals who were overweight and the amount of physical activity they participated in on average at the time to the numbers recorded of the same information for present day demonstrate Morrill and Chinn’s claim that obesity is an issue that has been developing at an alarming rate for several years
The limited knowledge on obesity makes it hard for people to grasp a concept on what they are actually doing when trying to become more “fit” based on common misconceptions about obesity, especially when so much information is hidden from us. One example of this being fat-free foods and their impact on health. In the past, when fat was revealed to be detrimental to health, due to the taste/preference factor, fat-free products increased in demand, but it happened to be too good to be true, as it turned out to that companies swapped animal fats for hydrogenated oils and sugar, which was just as equally unhealthy as the original animal fats (publichealth.org). Lack of information and this relationship between Americans and obesity have combined to create
According to the report of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) on ‘obesity and the economics of prevention’, Among OECD countries, Australia place the sixth highest position in occurrence of being obese and overweight (Sassi F, 2010), and trend scrutiny suggest that Australia will conquest the USA and UK by 2022 (Schneider H et al. 2010). In Australia, every third /fourth adolescent or child is been over weight/obese (Australian Health Survey, 2011). Haby et al ,2012 foresee that the occurrence of obesity in Australia will raise per year between 0.4% and 0.8% ,and Australian child / adolescent aged between 5 – 19 years will
Today, more than a third of adult Americans are considered clinically obese “causing higher medical costs and a lower quality of life” (“Defining Adult Overweight and Obesity”).
“During the past 30 years, adult obesity rates have doubled and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled.” (Friedman, 13). Obesity is a growing problem and should be considered a
It will be hard at first but as a nation, we must become healthy for our friends and family. Did you know the CDC states that obesity rates in the United States have been steadily increasing for the past several decades, with approximately 42.4% of American adults considered obese as of 2020¨. This fact is scary. The consequences of obesity are severe, as it increases the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. I will educate the American people about the causes and consequences of obesity in America and some possible solutions to combat this epidemic.
Obesity is regarded as a health problem since it is associated with numerous co-morbidities, including type-2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and some cancers (Department of Health, 2004). In recent years, statistics have suggested the existence of a global obesity ‘epidemic’ (WHO, 2000), posing a significant challenge to healthcare systems and governments over how to ‘cure’ and ‘manage’ the condition. Consequently, the trend toward increasing prevalence of obesity in older adults will lead to an increase in unhealthy life years and health-care costs (De Caria et al., 2012). This concept of the pathogenesis of obesity as a disease allows an easy division of disadvantage of obesity into those produced by the mass of fat and those produced by the metabolic effects of fat cells. In the former category are the social disabilities resulting from the stigma associated with obesity, sleep apnea that results in part from increased parapharyngeal fat deposits, and osteoarthritis resulting from the wear and tear on joints from carrying an increased mass of fat.
