It has been long debated over the importance of nature versus nurture in a child as they grow into an adult. Both of these things seem to play a major role in a child's life and development. While nature has to do with genetics and what the child receives from both the mother and father, nurture is the environment they grow up in, how they are raised and what type of things they are subjected to. David J. Linden author of The Accidental Mind and Roger R. Hock author of Forty Studies That Changed Psychology both share very interesting studies that explain nature and nurture and how these things may affect a child growing up. Although nature seems to be important because the child has genes to make them who they are, nurture is more important in shaping …show more content…
Nurture affects the development of mental functions and personality more and it overall makes someone the person they become. Studies have been done on identical twins and their growing up. While nurture plays a big role in the development of a child, so does nature. Identical twins, also known as “monozygotic twins”, whether raised together or apart tend to be similar in terms of extroversion and openness. When identical twins are raised apart they have personalities that are more similar than non-identical twins raised apart. When a monozygotic twin is raised in a middleclass household they tend to score the same on a general intelligence test as his/her twin raised in a wealthy household (Linden 54). Hock also shared a study on twins that Thomas Bouchard conducted a few years back. It is said that children get their sense of humor from their
This can shape a person not their Genes and it is proven that experiences can shape a person's. “The nurture theory holds that genetic influence over abstract traits may exist; however, the environmental factors are the real origins of our behavior”-(Sincero). This states that we may have urges because of our genes but we do not have to follow those urges and we ultimately make the decisions not our genes. This is basically saying if their parents are serial killers they might have the urge maybe to kill but if they were treated well as a child by normal people and did not know their parents they wouldn't kill becuase thats not the environment they were shaped in. ” Although it is true that fraternal twins raised apart have remarkable similarities in most respects, still the intervention of the environment have caused several differences in the way they behave.”
How is personality impacted if and when twins are separated at birth and either rose separately by mom and dad, or if they are adopted into two separate homes? Twins offer unique insight into the impact of environment on personality because in the rare instance that a set of separated twins can be studied. We can see how big of an impact environment has on personality vs. genetics. I have identical twins: Shetan and Agravaine. I study their personalities daily, to get to know them.
My task today is to convince you that nurturing has a greater effect on a person 's personality than nature. The nurture vs. nature debate has been a great controversial subject to most psychologists for a very long time. A lot of psychologists argue that a person 's characteristics can be influenced by both nurture and nature. The writer 's belief is that nurturing has a greater influence on shaping one 's personality. Although nature (genetics) plays a vital role in the process, its impact is not as evident.
But I do think that nature affects more of how you turn out as you grow up. There are so many reasons why I would choose nature more than I would nurture. One of them being that I have two younger brothers, and none of us act alike. One of my brothers tends to be very crazy and my other brother is very calm. I, on the other hand, I am always relaxed and try to go with the flow.
Were there factors that affected the parent’s behaviour towards the twins? Was one twin bigger at birth while the small one struggled? Do parents treat them differently because of this? Perhaps the twins are of different genders; do the parents with or without realising it behave differently towards the boy or the
However, this model is neglectful of conjoined twins’ capabilities to live a fulfilling life. Conjoined twins are two separate people that happen to share the same body, and are equally subject to the limitations that non-conjoined people face. Furthermore, unnecessary separation may be mental and physically detrimental for one or both twins. Generally, separation is harmful, close-minded, and denies the proven ability of conjoined
Some identical twins are very different. Bonnie and Brenda looked alike, but they had different personalities. Bonnie became transgendered, but Brenda didn’t. This shows that nurture had an effect on these two twins. If one twin turns out to be gay, then the other has a chance too because a gene could be carrying it to both.
Some factors that determine how a child develops include family structure, hands-on parental learning, role and relationships in society, school education, race and gender, and nature versus nurture. Children before learning language, use observation to learn about their environment and they look at their surroundings. As children grow, their interactions with family and friends, surrounding environment, and how the school system treats them hold heavy influences on their development. The debate between whether the nature of a child (genes or biological appearances) or the nurture of the child (culture or attachment) displays a greater influence over the other has been a debate for centuries. Although a controversial argument, it seems that
A common psychological debate is whether individuals are more controlled by nature or nurture. In this debate, some argue that nature, the inherited traits over which we have no control, impacts our lives more. Conversely, others argue that nurture, our upbringing by our family members and relatives, has a greater influence on our lives than nature. I prefer to argue that neither is more important than the other, but rather they simultaneously mold individuals into the people they become. The attributes of our environments and genetic traits we are born with are equally influential throughout a person’s lifetime.
People are [especially as children] always compared to their siblings, but with a twin it is always worse because you share everything. Another large portion of my personality is contributed by my friends. Their decisions and habits affect mine. However, the rest of my identity is on my shoulders. I am truly the only one who can decide
Nature, the more scientific hypothesis, is the belief that genetics is what makes us who we are. It’s a believable argument, but not convincing when considering the idea of nurture. I believe personality development is shaped on how a person has been take care of through their life. We learn new things every day, our learning process beginning when we are born. As a
When I was growing up, I didn 't make numerous companions and was modest, which made me less open to outsiders and new encounters. Thus, I may have felt on edge about the outside world, thinking about how other individuals would impact my life. In addition, I may have not possessed the capacity to add to an in number feeling of pleasantness because of inadequate human contact. In this sense, nurture appeared to a great extent influence my personality. In any case, as to reliability and neuroticism, the effect of nature appeared to exceed nurture.
INTRODUCTION NATURE This refers to all the evolutionary factors that have that have shaped the genetics that we inherit from our parents. Nature determine the range of our human potential. Naturists believe that the knowledge humans have about the world is innate. Therefore human development is largely determined by heredity.
There are many different discussions on what has the biggest impact when it comes to human development and the make up of DNA. The two terms that describe the makeup of DNA the best is Nature, and Nurture. When discussing Nature vs Nurture, the biggest question that will come up is which term will have the greatest effect on your behavior. By this question, it means will it be the genetic, or the environmental factors that will have the greatest influence on a person 's DNA. It is true that both Nature and Nurture play very important roles when discussing human development, but as you get more in debt between the two, you will realize which one plays the biggest role.
Twin studies have been popular by psychologists due to both genetic and environmental factors. As noted in “A Second Look at Twin Studies” by Winerman, equal environments in the classical twin study may not exist as identical and fraternal twins may not always be treated equally and it is an assumption without proof. Though the genetic makeup of the twins may be the same, the impact on the twin from the environment such as, parents, teachers, and peers may not. Twin researchers assume twins raised in the same home are raised in uniform environments. Take for instance two identical twins competing in sports.
