The correctional staff at Ohio State prison are doing the best job they can with the little support and no training in mental health. The officers on the street have little or no training with mental health issues, so when they are on the street they have to be really care with the suspects because no one very knows what state of mind they are in. The Correctional Staff always have to be on their toes because they never know what to except for the person who has been locked up in solitary confinement. They have little resource on how to take care of a mental person, because to them when an inmate acts up they are punished with solitary confinement. The correctional officers have to deal with being spat at, human waste thrown at them, yelled

The Dougherty County Jail is 1,230 bed state of art pre-trial detention facility that is under supervision and operation of Dougherty County Sheriff. In addition to pre-trial inmates, the facility houses State, City, and a small number of other inmates for other area law enforcement agencies. The jail facility is unique in that it has two on-site courtrooms that host a variety of court proceedings seven days each week. The jail maintains a high-level of safety and security utilizing current and nationally accepted detention management practices. The jail utilizes inmate labor under the supervision of contracted food services specialists to prepare approximately 3,500 meals daily.
Not only do these new recruits receive only a limited amount of training, but they are also taught to use force when it comes to the inmates misbehaving or disrespecting a guard (Bauer, 2016). During training, it was recommended that Bauer and his fellow recruits do not attempt to break up a fight between inmates because it would be too dangerous considering they will not be carrying pepper spray or a nightstick. Bauer goes on to talk about the realization that the inmates are very much in control of the prison. This is emphasized by the fact that the prison is very understaffed and there are only about two guards per tier, which holds nearly 100 inmates (Bauer, 2016). As well, as mentioned before, the guards are not very well trained and equipped to handle these inmates.
On April 21st, 1930, Ohio State Penitentiary, which was built in Ohio’s capital, Columbus, in 1834, caught fire and killed hundreds of inmates. When returning for the night, they discovered that a fire was started within cell blocks G and H. It was only after the fire had been doused, that everyone had realized that the scaffolding, on the outside walls of those cell blocks, was what had caught fire. At the time, the prison was known for its poor conditions. The prison was only meant to hold 1,500 people, but at the time of the fire, it was housing 4,300 inmates. This disaster goes down in history as the worst fire at any prison in the United States.
Introductory Textbooks know that they don’t need the Stanford Prison Experiment to be awesome since the belief is that they’re already awesome. You and I might not share the same opinions but who knew textbooks could be all that. Which is ironic because The Stanford Prison Experiment is one of the most famous experiments in psychological history. Haslam and Reicher say the SPE website receives 7,000 visitors each day. Richard Griggs asks the question, is with the Stanford Prison having such prestige, why don’t some textbooks include this famous experiment and critiques?
The prison system in Texas is its own and unique beast. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice or TDCJ has many different units that house many different types of inmates. These units across Texas all sever different purposes to the state and the local communities in which the prisons are close to. There are however three things that make each prison unique from the other prisons, the inmates that they house, and the different industries ran by the each prison and the programs offered to offenders. I work at the H.H. Coffield Unit and I will take you on a tour of that prison and explain what it is that make Coffield unique.
Prison Problems in the U.S. The United States have the biggest incarceration rate in the world. Our prisons are full of convicts, rapists, and murderers. One of our biggest problems are is that we don't have enough money too feed them and keep a roof over their heads. Another issue is the proportion of middle aged men in our country are either black or hispanic.
The mental health care system in Ohio is one of the most effective in the country. Ohio spent a lot of time and years making improvements in their systems. Separating the mentally ill and the prison general population by putting in mental health units to . Every morning the mental health staff get together to discuss inmates that are in danger to themselves, and talk about keeping a closer eye on them and come up with a solution to help them. They took action to their disciplinary process after seeing that many of them were going into maximum security prisons.
Authority gives a person the chance to feel superior, and as seen throughout this film, those within the position of authority will only then abuse this opportunity. Given the chance for people to gain authority or rather the sense of authority is enough to awaken the evil within. Within the movie, The Stanford Prison Experiment the guards were enabled to set a line of difference between the prisoners and themselves. They were able to make the prisoners feel weak or emasculated, forcing the students to strip and wear the assigned prison clothes that barely covered their genitals (Alvarez). Forcing the prisoners to wear these feminine articles of clothing and assigning them a number, gives the opportunity to strip away their personality and
Additionally, in an attempt to foster an increase in professionalism within the correctional community, care and consideration must be taken with the care and housing of inmates both privately operated and those operated by some branch of the government. “The quality of prisons has improved from the past, but there continue to be too many inhumane new prisons. New construction does not always result in a prison conductive to humane incarceration” (Bartollas,
As of September 2011, California incarcerated close to 144,000 inmates in its state prisons. This number fell in recent years owing to the pressure from SCOTUS and California policy changes. In 2006, California had a peak incarceration rate of 172,000 inmates (Rogan, 2012). Since 1970, California has seen 750% rise in incarceration levels, especially during the “war on drugs” campaign during the 1990s (Harvard Law Review, 2010, p. 753). With no end in sight to the rapidly growing number of inmates in California’s state prisons, the CDCR was challenged to manage the growing population.
They have a vinyl/silk screen industry plus a janitorial industry for its prisoners. After visiting several other prisons so far, as of right now it is kind of hard to expect what to see, because things could be the same like the other prisons we have encountered at , but
Examining Problems and Their Solutions in The Parole System The United States of America contains the third largest population in the world, which contradicts the fact that the United States has the largest prison population in the world (Aliprandini, and Finley). The fact that their prison population is so large alludes to the reason they would have a strong parole system. Due to contrary belief, this is not the case.
