In today’s society, it seems every time we turn the news on there is another school shooting. From the shooting at Columbine in 1999, to Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the most recent shooting at Umpqua Community College less than a month ago, more than 75 people have died in those four shootings alone. School shootings have become a major issue in the United States in the past few years. The argument over if teachers and principals should be able to conceal and carry weapons is of major controversy amongst politicians, school boards, parents, and the general public. Wouldn’t parents want to know their children are protected while at school by teachers carrying concealed weapons? Parents rely on the faculty and staff at the school to keep their children safe. No parent ever imagines they will get a phone call to inform them there has been a shooting at their child’s school. However, reality is it is happening more and more often. Teachers have full responsibility of the children in their classroom during the day, and …show more content…
In the past 65 years, only one or two shootings have happened in an area where guns are prohibited. The known fact somebody is able to carry a gun deters the shooter from going to such place. Massacre shootings always happen in gun-free-zones. In places such as Harrold, Texas and Utah, the teachers and principals are able to carry concealed weapons. There have been no shootings in those areas. Statistics have shown that a shooter has no negotiable issues, they simply want to cause as much chaos in the shortest time as possible before police arrive and they are either incapacitated or killed. If they know someone there may be armed and could possibly stop their plan they are less likely to make their attack at that place. They want to go to a place where nobody can destroy their
One day, one child, one gun, one school. Now, as saddening as it is to admit, we live in a world where school shootings are a part of everyday life, and there is nothing being done to stop them. As most can recognize, most of the media is more focus on what the President is going to say after the shootings happen, rather than focusing on what we as a nation are going to do to stop these tragic events. There have been a few ideas when it comes to solving this issue, and truthfully, most of these ideas will fall flat on their faces; meanwhile, arming teachers seems to be a possible solution. Arming teachers will deter shooters, secure students fears from outside threats, and in the worst case scenario can stop a school shooter before they can commit mass murder.
I do wonder that if one teacher could have had a gun and saw the shooter in a hallway of Sandy-Hook Elementary, how many children would still be alive today? I know according to the facts, most shots miss the target, but what about if one didn’t miss? I believe it’s worth training teachers, physically and psychologically, on how to appropriately handle a school shooting, while carrying a fire
Gun Control keep School Safe The 21st century has brought out a lot of violence not only in the communities in general but it also puts the lives of students in school in danger. Individuals should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon if they choose to in order to be able to feel safe weather the person is a teacher or a student. The right to carry Teachers in todays society should have the right to obtain permit and carry a weapon to school if they choose to.
This right remains paramount in ensuring self-defence and limiting these rights are the initial steps for the government to take away individual rights. Additionally, it is important to note that mass shooters do not abide by the law and most of the guns used in these shootings are acquired illegally either through illegal purchases or through theft. This implies that the shooters are not subject to gun regulations and background checks.
Over two thirds of American parents are concerned about their children’s safety at school following the Columbine Massacre (Madfis, 2016) and other high-profile school shootings in the US. Are their concerns justified? Having examined a report by (Borum, Cornell, Modzeleski, & Jimerson, 2010) which addresses this question by reviewing a range of empirical evidence, I feel as though it is safe to say that American schools are safe and the publicity of the rare shooting cases creates a grandiose perception of danger and causes unnecessary fear. The report also explains why there is a miscomprehension regarding the occurrence of school shootings and provides insight on how school shootings could be prevented. The first ‘desperate’ measures following the school shootings were to suggest that teachers should have handguns with them
Now obviously gun laws are still not up to par in America as there have been 18 school shootings in the first 45 days of 2018. Nevertheless these are all events that are looked to, to create new laws. Take the Port Arthur massacre for example. The massacre took 35 innocent lives and injured 25 more and was used as an example to create new gun legislation. This legislation made it much more difficult to obtain a firearm, which meant a drop in gun related violence.
Guns have grown into a major part of our society for many different things. As a result, we can make a stricter law on the guns and have more security. The article facts from “The Washington Posts” states that 13 people were killed at a high school in Littleton, Colorado in 1999 (Berkowitz 2018) In another article “Everything Town Research” states that there have been 299 school shootings in America since 2013. Just in 2018, there have been 26 school shootings.
Districts should encourage you, teachers, to carry AR-15’s to protect your students, and in exchange put your name in a raffle for teacher of the month or your name printed in white bolded letters on top of your new designated parking spot. If you are the name bolded in white letters on that sweet parking spot that is now closer to your homeroom, get angry and happens to shoot a couple of ungrateful kids, it’s simply expectable because there was bound to be a shooting at your school anyways; you are just the proud teacher whose name is now engraved on a fake golden plaque hanging on a wall
The shooter used a rifle called an AR-15, which many people think it means “assault rifle” but it really means Armalite Rifle design 15. Gun laws should be stricter on the mentally ill aspect. Nicolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter was mentally ill and bought a rifle legally which should not have been allowed to happen. Now making gun laws stricter will not mean the death rate or shootings will decrease right away because mainly the only people that go to a gun store to buy a gun are law abiding gun owners.
If it is known that the teachers are armed ready to neutralize any threat that comes to harm the children, shootings would drastically decrease solely on the fact that people often value their own lives. If a shooter walks into a school and is immediately stopped, it will be a sign to the others planning something in the future to not even attempt to attack. As it is in many western states, some teachers are already armed. While there have been no attacks in Colorado, Texas, Utah and other lands considered desolate and far spread, teachers are yet still bringing guns on campus. All of these schools remain safe from shooters for one reason: the teachers are already armed and ready to protect the children inside at all costs.
Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).
And NONE of them have been in a school. Compare that to America’s 300 shootings in ONLY schools. It’s staggering. Now. Our gun laws in America aren’t strict at all.
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
Would you want to risk your child's life or somebody else's child? There have been over 30 plus school related shootings just in the 20th century. Why haven't we upgraded our school's security
