Having pride in one’s name is not necessarily a bad thing, but having pride with no humility can hurt others. An author may use the names of characters to hint at his or her theme and display motifs that relate to the theme throughout the story. William Shakespeare is the kind of author that uses great quantities of motifs to reveal his theme. Shakespeare uses the motif of pride in one’s name in many instances to help the audience better understand the conflict between the Capulet and Montague houses. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses the pride in one’s name to highlight that pride without humility leads to violence and the demise of many of the characters. Romeo sees his name of Montague as a barrier to his love for Juliet, a Capulet, …show more content…
In the prologue, Shakespeare gives an introduction to the story and he foreshadows Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. In order to inform the reader of the conflict he writes, “Two houses both alike in dignity/From ancient grudge breaks new mutiny” (Prologue. 1-3). When Shakespeare writes the two houses are alike in dignity, he means that they both have the same amount of pride for their families. He also writes that the houses have an ancient grudge, meaning that they have been fighting for a long time. Tybalt is a prime example of the conflict between the houses. Tybalt is a violent zealot for the Capulet house with a lot of pride in his name. When Benvolio, Romeo’s Cousin is trying to stop a fight between servants of the two houses, He asks Tybalt for assistance. Instead, Tybalt says to him, “As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee,” and attacks him (1.1.66). Tybalt does not hate Benvolio for his personality even though they are complete opposites. He hates him just because he bears the name of Montague. A person’s name should not be what defines them but rather their words and actions. Tybalt does not see things peaceful like Benvolio. He prefers violence over peace and pretends to be judge, jury, and executioner for the Capulets. Tybalt’s pride in his name causes much violence and the deaths of many characters. The houses’ pride in their names affects everyone around them but they are too caught up in their own feud to care. An example of the effect the feud has on others is Mercutio. Mercutio is Romeo’s best friend who always tries to cheer him up. However when he is fatally wounded by Tybalt in a fight between Tybalt and Romeo he tells them, “A plague o’both your houses!” (3.1.106). The people in each house hate each other with such a passion that they are oblivious what their actions do to the innocent people around them. Tybalt was so caught up in his hate for the Montagues that he did not
Tybalt hated Romeo because he was a Montague. Though Tybalt especially hated Romeo because of his affection towards Juliet. Once Friar married Romeo to Juliet, Romeo becomes more comfortable around the Capulets, he tried to talk to Tybalt and tells Tybalt he loves him, which just made Tybalt angrier, leading him to kill Mercutio. After the death of Mercutio, Romeo killed Tybalt out of frustration for Tybalt being able to live and Mercutio dead. If Romeo would have been more careful around Tybalt the fight that led to the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt would have not occurred.
The underlying theme of the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare was the clash between the company pursuing their personal desires or deciding to conform to what is socially expected. The circumstances of this affray were on display when Romeo presented his plot of marrying Juliet to Friar Laurence. The consequences of Romeo deciding to pursue personal desire were also on display when displayed his disapproval to his punishment for extirpating Tybalt. These instances culminate Shakespeare's idea of that the pursuit of personal desire not always rewarding the aspirant. The asininity of carelessly pursuing your personal desires and not thinking about the ramifications was on display when Romeo presented his notion of espousing Juliet.
His family”s pride showed no boundaries as Tybalt stated in (Act 1. Scene 5. 56-57) “Now by the honor of our family, I do not consider it a crime to kill him”(about Romeo). In this scene, Romeo came uninvited to the Capulets party. Tybalt was very hostile towards this move and saw it as an offense to his family’s name.
Members of the Capulet and Montague families were fighting in the streets of Verona. Tybalt says,” What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word/As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee”(1.1.65-66). Tybalt has extreme hatred for the Montague family and will want to fight them. Tybalt played a very prominent role in the hatred between the Capuelt and Montague families.
Feuds can be very deadly, in the play ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ by William Shakespeare. The feud is to blame for the many deaths in the play and why Romeo and Juliet had to secretly get married. The feud is to blame for the many deaths because if there wasn´t a feud the lovers wouldn´t have to get married in secret. A second reason is if there wasn´t a feud Romeo´s best friend didn´t have to die, Tybalt didn´t have to die, Romeo and Juliet didn´t have to die.
Tybalt is hot headed and rash. In the first act of Romeo and Juliet he is already starting fights as stated by him “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word / As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.”(1.1.63-64). Tybalt’s hate of peace is the most blatant example of his hot headed and rash actions. He is trying to get the Montagues riled up so that he can have a fight.
I.v.100-103).The aforementioned quote illustrates Tybalt’s hatred towards all Montagues, including ones that haven’t made any moves against him, this hatred is initially dismissed by Capulet and this causes Tybalt to commit a terrible offense that later forces Romeo to be banished from the kingdom.
Tybalt was a troublemaker and also a good sword fighter and picked a lot of fights. He fought Mercutio and killed him by accident. Tybalt was slain by Romeo because Tybalt killed his best friend. Tybalt was also mad because Romeo came to his party and thought that it was a
Romeo and Juliet is a well-known play written by William Shakespeare. Even though it is famous for being a love story, Shakespeare demonstrates that rebellion is closely tied together either it through the characters: Juliet, Romeo and Tybalt. By defying their families, authority and society's expectations, they set in motion the events in this tragedy. Romeo’s rebellion against society's expectations and his own family, the Montagues, is because of his love. His love of Rosaline is his first demonstration of defiance.
Their own families indifferences causing the death of their own children. Lastly, in Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt bullies Romeo when Romeo does not want to fight. Romeo loves Tybalt but he does not know that so Tybalt calls Romeo “a villain” (3.1, 64). Eventually Tybalt provokes Romeo enough to where they duel and Tybalt dies.
If you were challenged to a duel by you cousin what would you do? Well Romeo felt this when Tybalt Romeo’s new hateful, bold, and demanding cousin challenged him to a duel. Tybalt Juliet's cousin from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is all and more of these words used to describe him. And Tybalt is a hateful, bold, and demanding character that love nothing more than to see Romeo killed. Tybalt is an insanely hateful character especially towards Romeo and his household.
In Shakespeare's “ The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” Tybalt is bound for his own death. One reason Tybalt is responsible for his own death is him making irrational decisions. One of the ways he shows his irrational decisions is when he says “Are you fighting with these ,cowards? Turn thee, Benvolio. Look upon thy death.” (1.1.61-62)
The people who live in Verona are well aware of the continual conflict between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. In William Shakespears’ Romeo and Juliet, hatred is shown to be a destructive force that causes people to make destructive decisions. Hatred takes a big part in the play showing violence between the 2 families that will make a drastic change in the play. The society of hatred between the two families had a big impact to the social stability of the city of Verona. “ What, drawn, and talk of peace?
The downfalls of Romeo and Juliet are caused by bad luck and bad decisions. Since they’ve been alive and aware, the capulets and montagues have been at “war”. Page 14, Romeo and Tybalt bicker away at each other. Tybalt even hits Romeo with a third person indirect. “Uncle that’s a montague, our foe.”
Tybalt illustrates passionate hate which makes him very impatient with the Montagues and leads to his own death and causes emotional distress to the Capulet family. Accordingly this can be seen when Romeo goes to the fest at the Capulets and Tybalt wants to kill him solely because he was present at the fest. This, by his voice, should be a Montague. — (to his PAGE) Fetch me my rapier, boy.
