Proposition 63 requires background checks to purchase ammunition and firearms, it also prohibits the possession of large capacity magazines.Society’s mentality has evolved into shoot first ask questions later, resulting in many deaths among all age, cultural, and ethnic groups. Proposition 63 should be in full effect because it will prevent mass shootings, decrease the statistics of those who die from gun violence and abolish accidental deaths among the younger generations. According to a blog titled the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence claims “the U.S. firearm homicide rate is 20 times higher than the combined rates of 22 countries that are our peers in wealth and population.” An article from Ballotpedia illustrates “though these measure will not stop the next determined lawbreakers shooting spree, limiting easy access to bullets and boosting efforts to take guns from those who shouldn't… will help reduce 33,00 gun deaths a year” which proves the point that America’s crime rates due to guns is too high and if its prominent now 10-15 years from now it’ll be outrages. This proves that the new regulations on guns will more than likely decrease the percentages of deaths in a day because not as many people would be allowed to carry a gun due to background checks and the deduction of large magazine clips. Since 2016, there has been over one thousand people killed in relation to shootings in the United States. The worst shooting being the massacre that occurred October 1st 2017 in Las Vegas. Fifty-eight people died, with over four hundred people suffering injuries. Stephen Paddock was the man behind the gun, shooting into the crowd of the Route 91 Harvest music festival. Gun Control and Mass Shootings in America Gun violence is an unquestionable issue in America, with the United States ranking as one of the worst with both homicides and suicides using guns. That being said, we outnumber Mexico in gun related deaths and among first-world countries we rank far above others in the number of gun deaths, such as England and Australia. This is exactly what proposition 63 strives to do, regulate the sales of ammunition and the people that can purchase it and require an extensive background for those who wish to obtain a firearm. The overall goal of this proposition is to attempt to reduce gun brutality in the United States, in order to create a safer community. If proposition 63 passes then the requirements to own a firearm or sale ammunition will become even stricter. Australia a country and government very similar to ours had a school shooting in 1996 where there was a killing spree in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded. Prior to the Port Arthur shooting there had a been 18 mass shooting in the country of Australia. After the Port Arthur attack, there had been 1 mass shooting where one man shot his wife children and himself. In America, there the last mass shooting that was on the news was one the 2 of December this year in San Bernardino, California. 14 People had been killed and 17 had been wounded.
On, February 14, 2018, a mass school shooting in Florida got the nation’s attention, however, gun violence has always been an issue, and it is only getting worse. Now people are saying there needs to be something done, and there are many that agree. Starting off there should be stricter gun laws, because in today’s world it is too easy to get handguns and assault rifles. With, the capabilities a firearm holds, such as taking people’s lives there must be stricter restrictions that could help cut down the gun violence and save lives. Increasing the age of purchasing a firearm would be one step.
