The time period after the Civil War was described as one of the most challenging times in history. This era, called reconstruction, was a period immediately after the Civil War when the United States searched to reconstruct society. This lasted from eighteen sixty-five until approximately the compromise of eighteen seventy-seven. Although blacks received some rights, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, there were steps taken by the governments to restrict them again. Reconstruction failed due to the construction of black codes, sharecropping, and Jim Crow laws. During reconstruction, The creation of black codes played a crucial part in its failures. Black codes came from laws passed in Louisiana that led to the restriction of freedom for African American men and women. Jim Crow laws were created by the southern states which discriminated against blacks in order to make sure they were segregated by whites. The following document states, “No nurse or corporation shall require any white female nurse to nurse in wards or rooms in hospitals, either public or private, in which negro men are placed” (Document E) The Jim Crow laws put an end to the use of nurses being able to help blacks. There was such a tremendous focus on separating blacks and whites under the Jim Crow laws as a way to stop them from being equal. Additionally, “Separate rooms shall be provided for the teaching of African descent..” (Document E) African Americans faced many difficulties involving these laws. African Americans were forced to find a way to live an independent life in the face of whites, with very few resources, money, or
The “’black codes’ adopted in other southern states- denied equality to African Americans” (page 49). These codes provided positive rights to African Americans like the right to own property, make contracts, and sue/be sued. However, they restricted African Americans as well by not allowing them to speak against Caucasian Americans in trials, be in a jury, vote, serve in a public office, or intermarry (page 49). This affected state governments, like Texas, because when the people saw the effects of the Republican Party agenda, it influenced many people to vote democratic in the next
The Jim Crow laws restricted the rights of African Americans to use the same public facilities and schools as whites, to vote, and to find decent employment. Jim Crow Laws Jim Crow laws were made to enforce racial segregation in the 1870s (Encyclopedia Britannica). These laws influenced the way black and white people thought about each other. There were signs that prohibited "colored" people in certain areas, meaning only white people could do things or be in certain places. There were other places where only black people could do things (Encyclopedia Britannica). At that point in time, black people were in need of help and could not find a way out of the situation they were in.
During The Reconstruction Era (1865-1867), freed slaves faced new injustices. The black codes were created after the Civil War. The Southern states of the United States created these codes to restrict black from being completely free after slavery was abolished. These codes included making blacks signs labor contracts and if they refused they would have to work with no wages. They had to choose between signing a contract for the whites and being underpaid or refusing to sign and risk being arrested and work for free.
As current time and social status are being challenged and pushed, the Jim Crow Laws were implemented. These state and local laws were just legislated this year, 1877. New implemented laws mandate segregation in all public facilities, with a “separate but equal” status for African Americans. This may lead to treatment and accommodations that are inferior to those provided to white Americans, systematizing a number of economic, educational, and social disadvantages.

In 1865, slavery was abolished and made illegal, but white Americans were not ready to give up their power over African Americans just yet. A series of laws entitled the Black Codes were enforced in order to control free black people’s rights. Although slavery was now considered illegal, many of these laws continued to oppress black people in America in extreme ways. Black Codes were slavery in another form because African Americans were not allowed to own a business without the government’s approval, were often enforced into labor contracts, and sentenced to long jail time for minor infractions.
They were denied many important rights, but were able to have some such as the ones to own property and marry. The black codes also ensured that they could be used as cheap labor by many racist plantation owners. Many states required African Americans to sign yearly labor contracts, with the punishment of being arrested or fined if they didn’t. This is similar to the treatment of slaves before the civil war because of the discrimination against them, depriving the African Americans of their rights and making sure they were inferior compared to the white

In 1865, after the Civil war, many southern state legislatures began enacting Black Codes, which were a set of state laws designed to maintain the social and economic structure of racial slavery even though slavery was now abolished.
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.

A system of laws discriminating against African Americans known as Jim Crow laws, extended all over the United States. At that time, it was legal to separate any organization or public amenity into ‘whites only' and 'blacks only.' For a long time, public transportation, cafeterias, rest areas, entertainment facility, movie houses, and even the United States Army could be legally separated.
