Movie posters are important marketing tools used to persuade potential viewers to visit the theater and purchase a ticket to see the film. Posters create a specific feeling about the upcoming film, establish a setting, introduce characters, highlight star talent, and create a perception about the genre. Successful posters inspire me to learn more about the film’s subject matter and potentially visit the box office to buy a ticket. Poor attempts at a poster will leave me confused and disoriented with the intended subject. After seeing a successful poster, viewers can use rhetorical devices to discuss how the poster is attempting to market the upcoming film. The film’s ethos, pathos, and logos all contribute to persuasion, as the poster forces a determination regarding interest in the upcoming film. I will discuss the poster for The Wolf of Wall Street and how it uses each rhetorical device as a means to establish the tone and setting for the film. This advertisement can make a difference if used in the right way and the right places.
The random pictures in the middle of the poster draw all attention. Unfortunately, the pictures do not help to understand the purpose of the poster. Language/Tone: The tone is very informal. The tone is supposed to create a nice, inviting sound, but it does not really fit the purpose.
An example would be “Be Sure You Have Correct Time.” This poster, aimed to persuade the minds of many Americans to adopt anti-foreign policies on many countries who were going to war with us at the same time. Therefore, the propaganda was trying to exploit the foreign countries’ citizens who we were at war with. A second example would be the poster titled, “This is the Enemy.”

With the alarming number of smokers, agencies spend billions of dollars every year on anti-smoking advertisements. Anti-smoking agencies enlighten audiences of the negative consequences of smoking and try to persuade them to stop. The visual I chose to analyze is a commercial engendered by an anti-smoking agency called Quit. The advertisement, “quit smoking commercial” shows a mother and a son walking in a busy airport terminal. Suddenly, the mother abandons the child, and after he realizes he is alone, he commences to cry.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

In the Drake sprite commercial, the author attempts to persuade viewers that sprite can unleash an individuals inner self and uses the Canadian born rapper Drake to show how one can express their creativity through music and film. The sprite commercial, featuring Drake, targets children, teens, and young adults of the twenty-first century. Whenever an author writes a text (including commercials), the author has a specific goal he or she is trying to reach. An author may aim to inform the audience by providing facts and opinions, entertain an audience through the rhetorical strategy humor, or persuade an audience in the hopes that the audience will side with an opinion or particular argument. However, in this particular commercial the author’s main purpose is to persuade his or her audience to purchase the soft drink Sprite.
In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, surrounds the cities of Paris and London during the late 1700’s. The novel takes place during the French Revolution, a period of social and political upheaval in France and England. While peasants died in the streets from hunger, aristocrats had more money and power than they knew what to do with. A Tale of Two Cities describes, in detail, the poverty of the time period, as well as the struggle of a people able to overcome oppression. The novel is largely based off of occurrences Dickens experienced during his childhood.
