Some fight with words and wisdom, while others choses to use physical force, even by taking the opponent’s life to fulfill their vengeance. One of the First lives lost in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, triggers the protagonists, Romeo, to avenge his friend, Mercutio. Romeo avenges his friend’s life, with the his own life and the trust from his wife, Juliet, at stake. When Romeo is mocked by the antagonist, Tybalt, a Capulet, Romeo decides to withdraw from the fight, then, his friend Mercutio decides to fight for him to protect his honor on Act three scene three.
The close friendship between Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio manifests into destructive love. When Tybalt calls Romeo “a villain”, Mercutio fights him and dies. Romeo is filled with grief and anger as evidenced in the quote: “And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!” Romeo never fights, but when he does, his impulsive actions result in violence which is “wild” and irrepressible. Shakespeare’s use of fricative alliteration highlights Romeo’s aggressive behaviour, which foreshadows the forthcoming event.

Tybalt is Capulet's most fierce fighter and is the cousin of Juliet. Tybalt finds Romeo and tries to start a fight with him. Romeo won’t accept the fight, but Tybalt continues his pursuit of Romeo. Mercutio, who’s Romeo’s best friend, takes the fight for Romeo. Tybalt and Mercutio begin there brawl, but the fight ends with Mercutio’s death.
At the feast when Tybalt sees Romeo he is determined to kill him, as Romeo sees Juliet and falls in love with her. The fight between Mercutio and Tybalt started when Tybalt abused Romeo which enraged Mercutio, as result Mercutio was killed by Tybalt during a sword fight Mercutio’s death angered Romeo which ended in Tybalt’s death by Romeo’s hand. “I deg for your justice which thou, Prince must give; Romeo slew Tybalt Romeo must not live” said lady Capulet. (Romeo and Juliet, act 3, scene 1, page 66). Mercutio’s death by Tybalt’s hand, led to his fight with Romeo which influence his own death.
Mercutio challenges Tybalt to a duel, so he draws his sword and attacks Mercutio. Romeo attempts to intervene, holding Mercutio back. While Romeo is restraining him, Tybalt stabs Mercutio and then exits quickly. Mercutio is mortally wounded, and chastises the Montagues and Capulets for encouraging such violence before allowing Benvolio to lead him offstage.
Tybalt challenges Romeo, but Romeo absolutely refuses to fight, so Mercutio steps up to fight for him. Romeo attempts to break up the fight, but to no avail. Instead, Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm. The wound kills Mercutio, and his last words, along with Tybalt’s taunting, send Romeo into a blind rage. “A plague o' both your houses!
Romeo acts as an arbitrator between Tybalt and Mercutio because he understands the repercussions of the impending clash. He tries his best to reason with Tybalt by saying “I do protest, I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise.” Meaning that he won 't fight because he is related to him through marriage. Tybalt, not knowing of their secret wedding ignores Romeo’s comment, continuing his goading of Mercutio.
Placing the Blame The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet truly becomes a tragedy once Mercutio, Romeo’s close friend, is killed by the hand of Tybalt. Multiple claims could be made regarding who is responsible for Mercutio’s death, but he himself is ultimately to blame. Once Tybalt approaches him, Mercutio begins to instigate. The heat at the time of this scene was hardly bearable, making matters worse as Mercutio quickly becomes irritable. He made insulting comments and aggravating remarks, pushing Tybalt to the point of fighting.
