Everyone knows the phrase, “kick them while they are down.” Well, that’s exactly what homework does. After an exhausting day of school, hard-working students feel very tired when they arrive home. However, homework prevents students from getting their much needed rest and makes them feel even more weary. Yes, a few studies have shown that homework has led to a slight increase in grades. But does that small increase in grades worth making students suffer everyday after school? Everyone who supports giving homework likes to see these helpless students in agony. Schools must prohibit homework because it has little to no benefits on students, it has negative health effects, and it prevents students from doing extra curricular activities. Homework has little to no benefits on students. In the article, ¨Down with Homework!¨ the author believes that homework does not have any benefits on children that many people think it does. In the article, “Down with …show more content…
Homework causes stress and tension in students’ houses. In “Down with Homework!” written by Alfie Kohn it says, “The demands of homework disrupted family relationships and led to daily stress and conflict.”(2) In some cases, stress may lead to death. Therefore, homework must be removed because it can lead to death. Do people want these poor students deaths on their hands? Many argue that homework positively affects students because it helps students with skills needed later in life so it seems. Dorothy Rich wrote, “It takes effort and perseverance to complete the work… these skills for later life include problem solving and critical thinking, organization, self-discipline, personal motivation.”(Putting More Home in Homework 1) However, in the article, Down with Homework! it says, “Piles of homework in themselves offer no guarantee that children are learning the lessons necessary for success as adults.” (Dorothy Rich 1) If homework does not
We have told our teachers time and time again how stressful such instances of homework are on our lives. We have told them of our predicaments with juggling school, home, sports, and free time. We have appealed to their instances of such oppression in their pasts. They too have been deaf to the troubles that grading homework has imposed upon them. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, that the eradication of homework would benefit both teachers and
The school use to start at 9am and it gets over at 3pm and then there is a tutoring program which running from 5pm to 8pm. The homework isn’t to bad because sometimes the teachers make us do it during class time and working on the homework with friends as a team work use to be fun. In the article “Down With Homework” the author says “Overwhelms struggling kids and removes joy for high achievers” I disagree on this statement because homework is a part of confidence and helps us to improve in our daily basis studies and keeps us on track. The idea that overall about homework it helps children to learn better and give them a better understanding of what they are learning in the daily
Why Students Shouldn’t Have Homework There are around 365 days in a year, and in a school year, there are around 180 days. From the beginning of the school year to the end, the most common thing that students least like, is homework. Coming home after a long day of school, then having responsibilities to do at home, not to mention some students have after school activities which take up around 2 hours if not more. Homework for students is a barrier that makes it difficult for them to have any kind of social life, or spend time with their family. There are many reasons why students shouldn’t have homework, during this essay people will learn why having homework isn’t helping the student, except making things more difficult for them.
Now when they go back to school they can refresh their memories and not feel so drowsy and feel like a zombie. Homework is mainly a waste of time it can cause stress and brain damage. Sometimes
Children in elementary school shouldn’t have homework because it is not beneficial to the students, it cuts time students have with family, and homework in elementary causes undue stress on both children and parents. Children in elementary school shouldn’t have homework because it is not beneficial to the students. Data shows that not only is homework not beneficial to children’s grades or GPA but it also determines a lot about children 's attitude about school, their grades, and their self-confidence in themselves and what they can do. It does not help with grades.
“A 2006 meta-analysis conducted of more than 60 studies of homework 's efficacy showed that doing homework did not necessarily increase an elementary school student 's test scores or grades.” (“Homework Bans Don’t. . .”) Another study in 2013, a researcher from Indiana University, Adam Maltese, conducted a study on sophomores to see the relationship between homework and their
Has your child ever experienced physical symptoms of stress, such as headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss, and stomach problems from homework? Many students say that homework causes stress, however 57% of parents believe that students are given the right amount of homework. Even though homework is assigned to help students practice time management, good work habits and reinforces the material that they learn in class but most students disagree. Homework doesn’t benefit a student, while homework is thought to be harmless it could cause serious consequences and by being responsible and doing it right when you get home it takes time away from family or extra curricular activities. This is why I propose that homework should be abolished from school in order to reduce stress or other symptoms, to create time for family/friends or socializing, and make school a fun place for students to learn rather than collecting pointless homework that could be done in class.
An average student would spend hours on schoolwork a day, which can be very stressful. A high school student will use half of their day around school relation. Almost all elementary to high school students will likely to agree that homework should not be assigned. The majority of students complain about homework yet teachers don’t usually understand why. While homework gives benefits to students, unnecessary homework should not be assigned due to the fact that there are enough school hours, it consumes time, and the development of poor health is encouraged.
While students would certainly gain a substantial amount of free time compared to now if homework were to be banned, they would lose the benefits of reasonable homework assignment. A reduction of meaningless homework would be just as effective at decreasing student stress as a homework ban would be. Solving students’ current lack of free time does not elicit a strict ban, however. The solution better suited to the situation is a reduction of homework in order to drastically reduce student stress, yet still allowing them to reap the multitude of benefits which a moderate amount of daily homework provides. Additionally, with a smaller volume of work every day, teachers are more likely to budget their “homework allowance” more meaningfully.
According to the study done by the Journal of Experimental Education, less than one percent of the students they questioned said that homework was not a stressor, while 73 percent indicated homework is a primary cause of stress. Research tells that the three primary effects of having too much homework include: stress, health consequences, and engagement issues. Readers will benefit from this essay because they will soon know the problems caused by too much homework, they will also get an idea of why teachers and staff are hesitant to change the amount of homework they are currently giving. Too much homework can do serious damage to the children and teenagers we would do anything to protect Too much homework can give kids stress that is anything
Picture this: you get home from school after two one hour-long clubs and after sports. You rush home, devour dinner, and it’s about 6:30. You still have two or three hours of homework to do. You finish your homework at around 8:30, and then play on their phone until midnight and fall asleep. Then you wake up the next morning, still very tired, and do it all over again.
There are stories flooding the internet of students who have been so weighted down by the amount of homework burdening them and that combined with the stress just caused their mind to seize up until they just broke down and cried. Personally, I used to love school and the concept of learning new things until I came to high school where it was such a high demand and there are other students like me. There are even students who are going through stuff like death of a family member, or risky family life, or even just have bad living conditions that have to learn to forget all those problems until that type of stress sneaks up on them. The fact that they don’t have any time to talk to anybody about their problems because they simply have no time causes them to internalize this pain until they eventually blow up mentally. Teachers usually argue that students don’t have enough time to complete work during the day, and that homework reinforces the things students learn in class.
Homework is beneficial when you have the right amount of homework. With homework you learn life skills, and finally it helps you master a skill. Furthermore, homework is beneficial to students. First of all, homework is beneficial when you have the right amount of homework. Studies show that with the right amount of homework 2nd graders have done better in math, 3rd and 4th better in english and vocabulary, 5th in social studies, and high schoolers in american history as well as shakespeare.
Practice makes perfect. This applies to everything in life such as sports like basketball and football, to activities like piano and skating. This age-old adage also applies to homework on how it helps students perform better in school. Recently, the use of homework has come under fire by various people, some even calling it an evil. The argument against homework is that it is unhelpful, leads to increased amounts stress in students, and inflicts negative effects on their academic ability and performance.
Above all, homework allows the students to gain responsibility, time-management, perseverance, and self-esteem. “The act of completing homework has benefits in terms of developing good habits in students.” This shows that, students are gaining many skills from homework. This also shows that, homework isn’t a waste of time and students do benefit from homework. “Homework also teaches students how to problem solve, think independently, and build an understanding and interest for the issues in our society.”
