Death is a recurring event in Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Two star crossed lovers take their lives, and their families are joined after an eternal feud. When Romeo Montague commits suicide after finding his young bride supposedly dead, the dramatic scene sets the catastrophe in motion and speaks to his tragic flaw of impulsiveness. It also illuminates the true meaning of the play, which is the power of hatred, and eludes to every character's feeling towards their fate. Does Romeo’s self inflicted death make him a villain after all, or is he simply an impulsive young man with a big heart, doomed by blood never to love a Caplet? Romeo, banished from Verona, is informed by his trusted friend Balthazaar that Juliet’s funeral was held that day. In reality, Friar Lawrence aided her in faking her death with a potion to avoid her arranged marriage to county Paris, but this is unbeknownst to Romeo. On horseback, he rides to the Capulet tomb and finds his wife, still and unconscious, inside. Romeo, overcome by the emotional pain from the assumption that his love had died, hastily pulls out the vial of poison he purchased from a poor apothecary to be with Juliet eternally in heaven. As he drinks, the reader is aware that this would be a romantic gesture if not for the catastrophe about to erupt; Juliet stirs and awakens to find her lover’s cold body. She weeps, and penetrates her rib cage with his dagger. If Romeo had waited mere seconds before making such a thoughtless decision, both would be alive and ready to start a new life together in Mantua. Without Romeo’s tragic flaw of impetuous, emotional thinking, the story would have taken a sentimental turn. Juliet’s death, caused by Romeo’s, is not the final consequence of his flaw, however. Along with the damage he had done, Romeo’s suicide made him a martyr and squashed the vendetta between the Capulets and
Their love brought them temporary pleasure; however, that same love caused their permanent end. Romeo is the main factor behind the demise of Juliet and himself. Romeo is introduced as a passive man who deeply longs for romance. He is a slave to passion and romance and is obsessed with obtaining it with whoever is willing to reciprocate. Romeo is in deep depression because of unrequited love for Rosalind, “This love feel I, that feel no love in this” (1.1.182).
Eventually, he decides to give Juliet a potion “that cop’st with death himself to scape from it” in order to make her appear deceased, thus excusing her from the wedding. (IV.I.75) From that point on, she will travel in a casket to Mantua, where Romeo will be there waiting after having been told the plan by another Friar. Juliet, once again, acts with haste and takes the vial without thoroughly thinking of the negative implications of her actions, thus showing immaturity. Juliet finally leaves the chapel and goes home to initiate the plan.
Juliet is extremely heartbroken and goes to see Friar Lawrence. While with Friar Lawrence she decides without Romeo she has no point on living any longer and tries to kill herself. Friar Lawrence stops her, and they come up with a plan to fake her death with a sleeping potion so she can sneak away to be with Romeo. They try to inform Romeo, but the letter fails to send and instead of hearing the plan he hears his wife Juliet has died. Heartbroken Romeo buys poison and decides to kill himself next to Juliet’s
“Two households, both alike in dignity (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene), From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” ( Shakespeare, prologue, page 1 lines 0-10). That was talking about the suicides of Romeo and Juliet and the person I hold the most responsible for their deaths is Romeo. Ihave three main reasons why he is the cause of his and juliets death. They are first off he is moody teenage and evey one knows that you cant trust thoes people.
However, Romeo returns to Verona and kills himself to die with Juliet, a Capulet and his wife. Coincidentally, she is in a coma, not actually dead, and ends up killing herself when discovering that Romeo is dead. Upon the discovery of the dead lovers, Prince Escalus concludes that the feud between the Capulets and Montagues was the cause behind the suicide of the two. The blame is placed on Capulet and Montague, and this finally marks the end of the feud between their
Love is the number one reason for teen suicides. Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare shows reasons why this statement is true. The tragedy is set in Verona, where the descendants of feuding families fall in love. The love between Romeo and Juliet’s leads them to their deaths. Throughout the play Shakespeare presents through different characters that a person should not prioritize love over life.
Heartbroken to see him dead, she kisses him hoping for a kiss of death but she had no luck. She spots a dagger on Romeo and seals her own fate ,”Oh happy dagger, this is thy sheath!”. In the end,the King and Queens of the Montagues and the Capulets are brought together in woe grieving over their dead children. If it were not the pressure between the two kingdoms, the couple would not have to perform such a drastic act of
William Shakespeare once said, “Death is a fearful thing”. This does not relate to the play Romeo and Juliet because they are willing to take risks that jeopardize their life. Juliet and Romeo are fine with taking their lives for each other because they are willing to do anything for each other. In the play, Romeo and Juliet are in love, but they have problems with their families having a feud with one another. They try to overcome their families hating each other, however, they cannot overcome it and eventually they die because of the feud.
Finally, he kisses her for the last time before he enters his eternal slumber. Romeo makes this decision with his heart affirming that the heart rules over the head. Furthermore, Juliet soon wakes up and realizes that Romeo is dead. Juliet takes his dagger and kills herself, the after-effects of the previous foreshadow when she showed Friar Lawrence her dagger. Juliet says, "Yea noise?
Romeo shows great haste in killing himself for one girl, his love, especially because she is not the only girl he has ever loved. He is willing to drink poison and kill himself before even confirming whether Juliet is really dead. As a cause of this decision Romeo and Juliet’s families are both affected, meaning his haste causes harm to more than just himself. Romeo’s haste is exemplified within these two scenes and is therefore safe to conclude that his hastiness proves to be a lethal
Lastly, throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet have been threatening suicide to solve their problems (Shakespeare 973-1014). As most people know and understand when people threaten suicide something is wrong and because they were stressed they made more bad choices. That is why Romeo and Juliet are the most guilty people causing the tragic
Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die.” She then takes Romeo's dagger and impales herself in the stomach after kissing him on the lips and realizing there isn’t enough poison left there to kill her also. On the other hand, there aren’t as many suicidal plans from Romeo over the course of the four day relationship.
When there is a teen suicide in any community or town there are two questions that immediatly come into people minds. One is why, but the second one is just as important and that is who. Who let them do this? Who influenced them into this? In the play Romeo and Juliet the person to blame for these deaths is Romeo.
After she drank the potion the Friar would send a letter to Romeo letting him know about the plan. Unfortunately, he is not able to send the letter. Therefore Romeo kills himself when he sees Juliet’s dead body. When he is about to drink the potion he says, “O my love, my wife! Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath”(V. lll.80-81).
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare writes of a budding love between two adolescent lovers. However, their destiny is to never come together because of the enmity among their families. They deem it impossible to survive without one another, so they rob their mortal bodies on the souls that occupy them. The tragedy of their deaths brings the two noble homes together to unify for their children. Many people conclude that Friar Lawrence or the parents are at fault but in reality Friar Lawrence just does as Romeo and Juliet ask.
