Recently I analyzed the memoir entitled, “The Money” written by Junot Diaz. The author describes in his memoir his family’s relationship to money around 1980 which was a time when immigration began to flourish. In his memoir Diaz’s purpose towards the reader is to show struggles and experiences that many immigrants faced and can still be facing today. While analyzing “The Money” I was also able to point out frustration and disappointment Diaz felt towards his mother as well as Mr. Diaz’s emotions as a young boy struggling with what seemed so important at the time, and his reflection on his memories which he shares with his readers. Diaz has a strong point and purpose he is trying to get across to his readers as he begins to describes his memory. Diaz states, “But my grandparents were alone in Santo Domingo, and those remittances, beyond material support, were a way, I suspect, for Mami to negotiate the absence, the distance, caused by our diaspora.” (114). This statement shows culture; a very traditional Hispanic family always gives to their family who live in their home country. Diaz didn’t understand why his mother would take away from them to give to their family in Santo Domingo, “She chipped dollars off the cash Papi gave her for our daily expenses, forced our already broke family to live even broker.”(114). Junot Diaz continues his memoir by expressing his life as a young Dominican boy living in a low class neighborhood. He struggles to enjoy life as a child because his mother is more focused on providing to their family in Santo Domingo. Throughout his writing career, Soto has written eleven poetry collections for adults and has been awarded both the Bess Hokin Prize and the Levinson Award. He is a recipient of the Tomas Rivera Prize and has earned awards from the PEN Center and National Education Association. His works have been critiqued and praised on numerous occasions, and he was named NBC’s Person-of-the-Week in 1997 for his advocacy for reading. However, as a young boy, Soto never expected any of this. It was in college when one book of poetry would change his life forever.

Though the novel has an appealing story line, it is important to recognize the intertwining of Dominican culture and American pop culture Diaz embedded in the novel.
Joshua Davis “Spare Parts” is about four young undocumented teenagers who attend at Carl Hayden, that come together as a team to build a robot and enter a robotics competition. These kids: Oscar, Luis, Lorenzo, and Cristian came to the United States illegally and feared they would be deported back to Mexico. They also faced many struggles in life, such as building teamwork in building the robot, as well as money problems, and education. It is a story of life struggles they faced as immigrants in the country. I can connect with this book because when my parents came to the United States they had reasons to stay, such as the opportunity to find work, and have a better life for the rest of my family.
During 1942-1964 many Mexican immigrants were “given” the “opportunity” to enter the United States in order to labor and help the United States economic industry. For many immigrants the bordering country was seen as an exceptional place that offered great opportunities but at the same time many family difficulties. The Bracero Program during the 20th century for many Mexicans was seen as an exceptional deal that offered immigrants and infinite amount of opportunities to succeed; however, in Ejemplar y sin igual we realize that the Bracero Program in reality was not the “exceptional program” everyone thought. In “Undocumented” Dan-el Padilha Peralta wrote “I hadn’t known we were poor and Dad had had office jobs in Santo Domingo. I remembered Mom’s work colleagues pinching my cheeks. What had happened?”(15). Dan-el described the first time he realized something was different from his life in Santo Domingo. He knew the parents didn’t had anymore the same situation, the unknowing mean of the word justify the child surprise with the mother reaction.
The stories of Junot Diaz feature various elements of social and personal issues that are highly prevalent in young Latinx men, primarily the compulsion and adverse effect of machismo, the poignancy of being an outcast in one’s community, and the lack of a father figure in a boy’s life. The first set of short stories prominently feature Ysrael, a Dominican boy whose face was disfigured by a pig when he was an infant. In “Ysrael”, he is the object of Yunior’s fascination, and the victim or Rafa’s (Yunior’s brother) torment.
Immigration is deeply rooted in the American culture, yet it is still an issue that has the country divided. Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco, in their essay, “How Immigrants Became ‘Other’” explore the topic of immigration. They argue that Americans view many immigrants as criminals entering America with the hopes of stealing jobs and taking over, but that this viewpoint is not true. They claim that immigrants give up a lot to even have a chance to come into America and will take whatever they can get when they come. The Suarez-Orozco’s support their argument using authority figures to gain credibility as well as exemplification through immigrant stories.
“Fiesta 1980” father and son. Junot Diaz story “Fiesta 1980” is a story about an immigrant family that came to the US in the hunt for better opportunities. The story includes a myriad number of culturalisms to show that Yunior’s family is still new and that they still conserve their traditions. Nevertheless, Yunior’s family is not so different from many other Hispanic families in the US; a great amount of Hispanics families can be represented by “Fiesta 1980”.
In Julia Alvarez’s “A Genetics of Justice” three central ideas are used to develop her autobiography. She uses the ideas of trauma, silence, and voice throughout. Trauma is a main idea in the text. For example, it is present in multiple areas of the text. The text states “...the dictatorship that my parents endured most of their lives...under the absolute control of Generalisimo Rafael Leonardo Trujillo.. families...kept their daughters out of the public eye, for Trujillo was known to have an appetite for pretty girls...
For a nine-year-old who wants nothing more than to make her mother proud this was exciting. In the beginning, we can see her excitement and desire, “in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so.” (Tan). However, as we follow the story we see her excitement quickly fade to sorrow and anger. The high expectations immigrant families place on their children is still a very relevant social issue and can be witnessed throughout the United States.
In “Wildwood”, Junot Diaz presents a troubled teenager by the name Lola to have distinct conflicting values with her mother. Her mother has controversial Dominican norms and responsibilities. These norms are not what Lola wants to be. Her mother soon gets sick and increases Lola’s feelings to take action on how she wants to live her life. When Lola and her mom continue to carry their abusive conflict, Lola decides to run away to Wildwood.
Alvarez and her family have a lot of trauma considering there lives in the dominican republic and living under the dictator,through it all alvarez's parents raised a daughter who would share their story in a fashionable matter that told the story how it was.
The immigrants entering the United States throughout its history have always had a profound effect on American culture. However, the identity of immigrant groups has been fundamentally challenged and shaped as they attempt to integrate into U.S. society. The influx of Mexicans into the United States has become a controversial political issue that necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their cultural themes and sense of identity. The film Mi Familia (or My Family) covers the journey and experiences of one Mexican-American (or “Chicano”) family from Mexico as they start a new life in the United States. Throughout the course of the film, the same essential conflicts and themes that epitomize Chicano identity in other works of literature
Mr. Junot Díaz’s paper titled “The Money” is a paper about the struggles of growing up as a Dominican, or less specifically an immigrant, in America. The paper offers a brief gimps into Mr. Díaz’s life as a young man, it shows his family structure and his neighborhood structure. It shows the type of people he had to deal with growing up and how he handled the way these people acted. The point of the text is to show how Mr. Díaz lived as a young man though one specific life experience.
As a young child, after being told of how poor her houseboy Fido was, Adichie did not believe his family could also be hardworking. “Their poverty was my single story of them. ”(Adichie) She also details how later, on a trip to Guadalajara she was overwhelmed with shame because her only image of Mexicans was the “abject immigrant” due to the “…endless stories of Mexicans as people who were fleecing the healthcare system, sneaking across the border, being arrested at the border, that sort of thing.” (Adichie)a She was caught by surprise when she saw Mexicans happy and at work in the marketplace.
