Everybody has desires that constantly weigh over their heads, pushing them to be diligent in all their endeavors, but what would you do if you knew that one day you would no longer have the opportunity to fulfill these desires? Everybody lives their lives so focused on the end goal that they are oblivious to the world around them, and the sad part is that in some cases the end goal is unattainable or never reached because the person dies. The subchapter starts with Perry and Otto, the Hamburg vacationer singing about, “some folks [that] say the worst of us they can, but when we’re dead and in our caskets, they always slip some lilies in our hand” (Capote 117). On the surface they are merely singing a song, but the words tell the reader about the pain they feel. Perry is singing about the deceptive people in his life, who talk bad about him, but then go to his funeral as if they care. The first person that comes to mind with this lyric is Perry’s sister, Barbara, whom he detests very much. Barbara claims to love her brother, but tells the detective how fearful of him she is. In his eyes, Perry sees this as betrayal and may be a large part of the reason he detest her. Capote uses this lyric because it foreshadows the death of Perry. Otto and Perry conclude the song by asking “won’t you give me flowers while I’m living” (Capote 117). This lyric is essential because the “lilies” and the “flowers” symbolize mercy. He is pleading with the world to give him mercy while he is alive, not after he is dead. In other words he is begging the world not to kill him through the capital punishment, but instead grant him mercy and allow him to live out his life in prison. Perry Smith had a compultion to kill Mr. Clutter, and there was no clear motive behind the act. Capote kept this vital detail to prove how Perry does not have complete mental control of his actions. Smith said himself that he was reluctant to hurt Mr. Clutter, as he was a “nice gentleman”, but regardless went through it. It was said that Perry Smith had schizophrenia and Dick Hickock’s violent actions were rooted in a severe concussion suffered in his past. It was evident that both men were affected by some mental disabillity, yet they were sent to death row, rather than a mental institution.
Even though the story starts off pleasant and creates a collection of tones, the overall tone is serious, gloomy, and sympathetic. “Then, touching the brim of his cap, he headed for home and the day’s work, unaware that it would be his last.” (Page 54) Truman Capote foreshadows the tragedy that will take place. As a reader, including this insight at the beginning of the novel leaves a sympathetic and even an almost uneasy feeling about upcoming events of this beautiful family.
Perry “It starts at home”(Alaina Thomas). Most murderers come from broken homes, some hardly have a place to call home. Perry Smith, a character from the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, was one of those people. Throughout the story it is evident that pieces of his childhood reflected on his behavior later on. It is possible if not factual that if Perry had been raised differently, the Clutter family would not have been murdered.

In Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood,” Dick and Perry have murdered the Clutter family and are on their way to Mexico. In this passage, Dick makes an astounding statement. In the passage, Dick claims that he’s “a normal” but that is far from the truth. He is a conniving, manipulative son of a bitch who thinks he’s normal in comparison to Perry.

In In Cold Blood, the issue over the death penalty is prominent. Did Perry and Dick deserve to die? Should the severity of one’s crime determine one’s fate? Although Truman Capote writes the novel in a straightforward, “from a distance” way, he conveys, through his characters, theme, and plot development, that the death penalty is an issue that should be looked at from all sides and that the legal system itself is the real issue at hand, and that the death penalty is used as a means to suppress the distress and indignation of the citizens surrounding the case, instead of suppressing the victim himself.
