According to many people they believe social media about the homeless has had a positive impact on the interpersonal communication. Since housing is not affordable for the homeless there should be more shelters provided for them. Poverty is simple not an acceptable life style for anyone. The homeless sleep in alleys, parks, tunnels, abandoned buildings and under bridges. The police have to run them from these areas regularly (Issa, Mario, and Mimi). The Community for Creative Non-Violence however claims it’s at, “a high of 2 to 3 million” (Fogel 386). Even if the homeless population is around 250,000, that is a lot of people who need somewhere to stay. The lack of attention from the government on this problem is disappointing. With such a large homeless population the government can't just keep ignoring this problem.
This is one of those problems that instead of finding solutions for, most people are “sweeping this problem under the rug” and finding “quick fixes”. The homeless population will continue to be victimized unless we change our attitude towards homeless people. We need to view them as fellow human beings who deserve a place in society. I think you made a great point by saying that “understanding the reasons behind them being homeless” because, in my opinion, that is one the biggest problems. We do not care enough or understand their situation; it is a lot simpler to blame poverty and homelessness on poor people.
For major social issues like racism and homelessness they are very hard to solve. Many times they are just being managed and not solved. Sometimes it’s easier to just manage an issue and keep pushing it away for a later time, until it starts being a big problem and costing society a lot of money. Like racism they try to manage it by having separate but equal, but it is still racist. Martin Luther King Jr fought for civil rights for many year, he used peaceful protest for his cause.
The homeless require help to get out of the situations they are in, but often people do not offer help because they attach negative symbols to the homeless. The social interactionist theory tries to understand how society views the homeless and how the homeless view themselves, based on the symbols that are projected onto homeless people. During the 1970s Madison Square Garden was filled with homeless people. Rising rents caused many people to lose their homes and apartments and to join the homeless community. Dozens of homeless women lived in the public restrooms as an attempt to escape the harsh weather.
