Bold, reasonable, and helpful are just a few words that represents Alexander Hamilton was a hero. America in 1755 was sinking into a pit of unrecognizable debt. Hamilton was a politician with big dreams and many supporters. The country was unstable due to many actions, one being the separation between the North and the South; dividing them into dangerous political parties. Many feared that although they had just finished a war that the country was falling into yet another one, but this time against themselves. It broke the people up between Federalist and Democratic -Republicans causing, them to constantly clash against each other’s ideas. Although Hamilton had flaws, the advantages of this great man highly outweighed his disadvantages. …show more content…
The National Bank gives a place for the government to safely deposit its money, and this also allows it to efficiently keep track of all the daily income. Another advantage of the National Bank is that it allows the government to loan excessive amounts of money to different countries without having to borrow the money from other state banks, and having to obey each state’s laws when it comes to the money. The National Mint has also contributed to help America grow into a successful, independent nation. The National Mint expels the purpose of the state banks by printing only one type of currency in one certain place (during 1755). Having currency printed in the national mint instead of state banks expels most of the chances of illegal or counterfeit currency being made. Also by having a National Bank, it gives off a sign of unity amongst America. It shows “the people” that America stand united as one and everyone and every state is no lesser than the …show more content…
Hamilton pushed for America to raise tariffs on foreign goods. His way of thinking was that although people loved foreign goods, they would not buy them if they had to pay an additional tax on top of the original price, but instead, the people would buy more American-made products that would put a greater increase in the economy which was greatly needed due to the nation’s debt rising daily. Hamilton was a Northerner, which caused him to constantly strive for excellence and growth of the Northern states. The growth of the Northern states would rapidly increase due to the great demand for American-made products with no tax on them instead of the foreign goods with taxes on them. This would make Hamilton a very successful and promising leader for the Northerners to believe and have a greater trust in him. It also states on a more psychological spectrum that by buying spices and other foreign goods, you are disregarding the fact that every dime “the people” had to spend does not or should not go into the country in which “the people” lived in, meaning that “the people’s” statement and actions are telling America that they do not care about the overall well being of Americas well
In 1791, Treasurer Alexander Hamilton proposed the First Bank of the United States, also called the First Bank, which, with the necessary-and-proper clause, allowed the government to act on the four rights stated in the Constitution: “the rights to collect taxes, borrow money, regulate trade among states, and support fleets and armies.” The charter of the First Bank caused a debate that Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, a large opponent of a central banking system, later described as “the most bitter and angry contest ever known in Congress before or since the union of the states.” The intensity of it is conveyed in “Cabinet Battle #1” in Hamilton: An American Musical, in which the debate between Hamilton and Jefferson is recreated in
On the other hand, Jefferson thought that an agriculture-based economy that was full of farmland would work better. He thought that an economy based on agriculture would work better than one promoting business. Jefferson’s main idea about this was that more farmland equals more food. More food means less trade, and less trade meant that there’d be less import taxes, resulting in less money America had to pay. He was against the national bank thinking that it was unconstitutional.
Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of Treasury of the United States, had a lot going for himself being a man that came from poverty to success, and he was a man “all powerful and fails at nothing which he attempts” admitted a congressman in 1791 (Tindall and Shi). Born in the Caribbean in the West Indies, abandoned by his father and orphaned at the age of 13 by his late mother who had died. Later moved to New York, became a lawyer and transitioned to nationalism thus giving him the important role of handling the weight of the debt America had accumulated $54 million deep after the Revolutionary War (Digital History). Hamilton saw the need for some financial credit to be given to America and he had the right idea by proposing a National Bank to his first president George Washington. Word dispersed of that proposal leading a
Alexander Hamilton was one of the key people in the ratification and debate on the constitution, and his philosophies helped shape present America, which is surprising as Hamilton “ famously called ‘democracy’ a ‘disease’ and a ‘poison. ’”(Martin 21) This is not necessarily because he believed in a monarchy or other system of government, but because of his lack of faith in the public, his beliefs that the educated should rule, and the direction the American government took with the inclusion of the Bill of Rights. Although this ideology placed too much faith in the educated, it did consider real problems with a government created by and for the people. Unlike Jefferson who often left affairs more in the hands of the people, and time than his own actions, Hamilton felt that the people should simply vote for officials and then
Of the founding fathers of our nation, history often remembers the ones who shaped our nation the most. Of course, history is shaped by those that survive, and so the hundreds of accomplishments that Alexander Hamilton was able to achieve in his short life time mostly go unremembered. The United State’s first Secretary of Treasury shaped the early economy of the nation in ways that still affect us today, yet, before the hit broadway musical about him, most people remembered him as the guy on the ten-dollar bill and the guy that Aaron Burr shot. Alexander Hamilton did so much more than that.
Hamilton was the first secretary of treasury of the United States which was a huge accomplishment for him. He was one of the people to convince New York to approve the U.S Constitution. Hamilton fought in a few battles because he was part of the Provincial Artillery. Alexander always
Alexander Hamilton is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States that not many people know about. American history shows that he has accomplished many things that have influenced how America functions today. Being the first Secretary of Treasury allowed him to influence the creation of the First Bank of America which has provided the foundation for our financial way of life. Additionally he was arguably the most prolific author of the Federalist papers that many U.S. courts and legislatures use today to interpret our laws. Lastly, he helped create the branch of the military known as the U.S. Coast Guard which serves and helps citizens in the United States by patrolling and protecting the coastline and seas of the U.S. along with saving lives at sea.
One thing Alexander supported ways to make a strong central government for America. (bio.com) He also believed that a strong central currency was key for America. Hamilton presented a plan to Congress to pay off war debts as fast as possible even if the debts were not promptly paid but was opposed by the southerners because they believed they shouldn’t help pay the debt the northerners still owed. Hamilton hoped to use the new government’s power to unite the disagreeing states and help accomplish his plan. Though the rights of the states were not nearly as important as national power and unity, they tried to keep order among the people in attempting to demonstrate federal power. “Hamilton's ideas about the role of the government in the American system contributed importantly to the ability of the new national government to assume its broad authority.”
Alexander Hamilton (2004) is a detailed true story of one of the most important figures in American history. It is based on Hamilton’s early life. As a politician, as a revolutionary war hero, and the first treasury secretary, Hamilton dedicated his life and intellect to unifying and strengthening the United States. Hamilton in truth did perhaps more than any other one person to secure the power of the American Union. Though he was never president, he was a hero deemed as a true founding father, title he kept till his death.
In the early 19th century, the United States of America was still just a young nation trying to find its way. Two parties emerged as competitors for the people’s votes and the opportunity to enact their view of how the young government should be handled. On opposing sides were Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. The Federalist philosophy of Hamilton was less trusting of the common man and more valid for the time period given the state of the United States in the early 19th century than the Anti-Federalist views, divisive actions, and philosophy of a strict constitutional interpretation of Thomas Jefferson. Alexander Hamilton authored a great many of The Federalist Papers of the late 18th century.
Being a good leader does not necessarily mean shining in the spotlight. Some of the most revolutionary and successful leaders are the ones who worked the lights. Self-awareness, self-direction, vision, ability to motivate, and social awareness are the characteristics of a good leader according to SIY Leadership Institute (SIYLI). There have been many accomplished and renowned leaders in America since (and before) the 1770’s, ones whose names are universally known and others who are unfamiliar. Of the latter is Alexander Hamilton, who showed potential since the minute he was put on earth, for no matter what obstacles were thrown in his way he forged ahead and never threw away his shot.
Alexander Hamilton not only had one role in American history, but he had multiple roles. Alexander Hamilton was an important figure in American history. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was George Washington’s right hand man, major author of the Federalists papers, was the first Secretary of the Treasury, and much more. Alexander Hamilton was born on the British West Indies Island of Nevis on January 11, 1757. His father abandoned his family when he was an infant, so they struggled to survive.
Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were two very political men that had different view on each other when it came to politics. Burr and Alexander were antagonist since the beginning, they always were trying to best the other, which would eventually lead to the murder of Hamilton. A duel is when two opponents stand back to back, and take paces on the agreed amount of distance each wants to cover. A handkerchief is then dropped which signals the start of the duel. Both men turn around and draw their pistols, after that whoever dies first loses basically.
“Hamilton’s background would always set him apart and give him an outlook on life and politics the other Founding Fathers did not share”(Gordon,50). Hamilton helped shape Washington’s foreign policy. Hamilton advised Washington on the Neutrality Proclamation, which declared that America would not become entangled in affairs but be friendly with both
