In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety. They fear that they will not be able to protect themselves on a daily basis, or in a worse case scenario, protect themselves if the government happened to turn on citizens of the country. They would also argue that people, especially criminals, can still find ways to gain access to guns. Guns should not be banned in the United States due to them being able …show more content…
In the past, the major gun control legislations that have been put into effect have not stopped people from obtaining firearms (Gun Control.) There have also been cases in the past where cities have attempted to ban handguns. After the ban was put into effect, murder rates tended to rise instead of drop, unlike what most people might assume. Crime rates and violence also skyrocketed after the bans were put into effect. Another problem with taking guns away, or banning them, is that the government cannot expect everyone to abide by the laws. In past circumstances when guns were banned, criminals were the kind of people that the government wanted to make sure did not have guns. In reality, they were always the ones who still had the guns (Lott). People can say that gun crime is a serious firearm problem, but guns are not always the exact cause of the crime. Even if the government tries to deny groups access to guns, they could still find their way around the law and gain access to one
Nicholas Willoughby English Comp I Prof. Cook December 17, 2015 We Cant Eliminate It, But It Can Eliminate Us Gun control has been a hot topic in the past few years. Making guns unavailable is only going to cause more crime. Criminals will not stop trying to get their hands on them, illegal or not. The government should not be able to take away our “freedoms”; gun control is one of them. Choosing to remove our weapons will only make our America a more hostile environment to live.
If you recollect about it, this really should be an anticipated effect of gun control, though most people don 't remember far enough past the words "gun" and "control" to see it. When you do give up and recollect about it though, the criminals who are committing crimes at present are the ones still making this a relevant issue of discussion in the foremost position. They are the aces who are either getting access to certain weapons that are already illegal and/or the ones who are using legal weapons illegally. If it weren 't for them disregarding laws and causing these crime rates to fail up, gun control would not still be in
Because “When there is a will, there is a way” unless we make sure no one can make a gun again, and destroy all existing guns, we cannot prevent criminals from getting access to firearms. In the end, unless stricter gun laws can prevent criminals from getting guns 100% of the time, it will really be pointless in the long
Gun control laws will not accomplish its intended goals of lowering the crime rate. Gun Control Overview says that “It will be difficult to keep weapons from being acquired by “high-risk” individuals, even under Federal laws and enforcement. Legal ramifications will not stop criminals from making crimes. Those who are determined, irrational, and insane will never respond to rational signals or the threat of legal ramifications. Indeed, such signals and ramifications will most likely encourage them further (3).”
This sounds like the perfect solution; however, it is not true. Criminals will always find a way to obtain guns, leaving law-abiding citizens defenseless. Since 1976, it has been illegal to own a handgun or to keep any gun from your home unlocked and fully assembled in Washington, D. C.; however, it is the “murder capital of the world” (Kopel). As you can see, banning guns does not eliminate
The people who want to go out and hurt someone obviously have it in their head to start off with, so they will find a way to get a gun or hurt someone in a different way, taking away gun rights isn’t going to stop people from killing if that’s what their initial intentions are in the first place. Adding to it, many Americans believe that that taking away gun rights is unconstitutional. “This is a freedom that Americans have acquired over time, but by banning guns it takes that freedom away, and thus going against the declaration of independence because it is a law that is restricting the people from their rights to own a weapon for protection.” (Debate). The biggest upset about the taking away guns from our people is the fact that it goes against everything America has always bragged out being, the land of the free.
Ready, Aim, Fire Through the past several years, the United States has experienced many different events changing the way people look at the world. Through this same time, it seems as if there has been an increase in the death toll to the lives of American citizens. From the bombing of the World Trade Center in 2001, to the Sandy Hook Shooting, the rate of mass killings in the U.S. looks to be at an all time high. President Obama and many other politicians believe that the answer to stopping all of these acts of terrorism is the further restriction of firearms in the country. The fact of the matter is, the further implication of restrictions to the right to keep and bear arms is not the key to stopping these mass murders.
Some authors feel a sense of pride in having guns a part of our country. “Without guns we would not be the free country we are today.” (Juliano 21). Not only do citizens
One of the most debated and intense arguments is the issue on gun control and gun policies. Gun control and gun rights is always an emotional topic that has been fought in the political arena for many years, especially during presidential elections. Gun control proponents want to see all guns extinguished and they believe that guns are a key problem to crime, but gun rights advocates believe that the right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Gun control is not the solution to limiting or restricting crime. First off, I want to go over the fact that most criminals usually don’t get their guns legally and that by putting forth a law it would not guarantee lower crime rates.
No legislation in this country has called on a ban on all guns, instead it has tried to prevent certain people with a troubled past from obtaining guns. We need gun-control in this country for reasons that should be obvious. How many innocent people must die before we realize that we have a problem with guns in this country? Tragedies such as that in Newtown, Orlando, Aurora, etc. should make it clear that we need gun control reform. Gun control is not a threat to our freedom, but rather a way to save lives.
Gun limitation is an unpopular opinion, and the elimination of guns altogether can be protested with evidence from the Constitution. The Second Amendment gives the citizens the right to bear arms, and there is a section of the document that states that the “pursuit of happiness” is a right that the government is not allowed to remove. Granted, the pursuit of happiness argument is unstable, because the ending of lives due to guns is another violation of the constitution, but the argument is valid for those who use guns responsibly, and do no harm to others with them. Even though eliminating guns is an unpopular opinion, the evidence still point to the fact that mass shooting numbers have increased substantially in the most recent decade. There are however, some people who have a viewpoint on the other end of the spectrum-meaning that they want no restrictions on guns at all.
No matter how hard anyone tries, there is no way “to extinguish this supply of guns” (Wilson). Guns will always be made, if they're not made to help people, they're made to hurt them. Criminals will either make the weapons themselves, or employ others to do the work for them. The manufacturing of guns will never cease, if they are made illegal people will still find ways to get their hands on them. Assuming that guns were banned, those who want firearms, will get firearms, if it is harder for them to get guns, “those that they cannot buy, they will steal or borrow” (Wilson).
Criminals, just like everyone else really do not want to be shot and killed, and will even try to avoid committing crimes where they think guns are present. Guns are a pivotal part of American safety. Banning guns from citizens who abide by the law will not take guns out of the hands of criminals. In fact, many studies that have been conducted support this observation.
Which true and convincing until you realize that even if we do ban guns then yes criminals can still but they illegally from the black market. But consider this, if a criminal saw a XM-15 Bushmaster or another semi-automatic gun sitting on his table, he can just pick it up and go kill people. But if those weapons were banned he would need to go through many blackmarket and illegal places, which may be unreachable to him because of his lack of knowledge. And to top it off most of the people who do a mass shooting against innocent people are not criminals they are just mentally challenged and they probably won't go through the process of going to a black market or purchasing it illegally if they had to. Of course we will never be able to stop shootings but if we make the gun harder for the shooters to get than we could lessen the gun death rate by a
First and foremost, banning guns will not stop criminals from obtaining and committing crimes with them. Furthermore, guns don’t kill people; people kill people. Lastly, guns prevent the government from becoming tyrannical and oppressive. At first, one may think that banning guns would be a superb solution to the growing problem of gun violence.
