Leah Chiu Ms. Lovelace English 9 A1 30 March 2023 A Tragedy of Hate in Romeo and Juliet Hate is a strong emotion that is always around us and sometimes it is hard to resolve. In modern day, this emotion is often seen in different places like school, businesses, and in relationships; eventually it will be expressed in ways that are hurtful to people and can affect people’s emotions. In the famous play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare tells the tragic story of two lovers, both children of the Capulet and Montague family that can not fall in love because of their families long past of hatred. Despite their family’s hate, they still love each other and wish to escape, still it did not turn out that way. Both of their families did not agree …show more content…
Tybalt sees the Montague and Capulet servants fighting and he walks over saying how much he hates the Montague family and calls them cowards by saying, “ I hate the word/ As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee/ Have at thee, coward!” (1.1.71-73). Tybalt is extremely loyal to the Capulets and irritates easily and has a heated temper, so that is why he is so mad when he sees the families fighting. Even though he did not know what was going on, he believed the Capulets are always right and the Montagues are always in the wrong. This shows how Tybalt has a strong amount of hate towards Romeo and the other Montagues because of Lord Capulet’s constant brainwashing. Later on in the play, Tybalt shows hate when he sees Romeo and the Montagues at the Capulet party and wants to confront them. He thinks none of the capulets belong at the party, still Lord Capulet thought Romeo had a good reputation and had no intention of killing anyone at his house. Tybalt was outraged by his uncle’s response so he said, “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, A villain that is hither came in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night” (1.5.69-71). By Tybalt saying this it shows how Tybalt’s hate for the Montagues are so strong he does not care if they are doing bad things and killing them will still be his priority and this shows Tybalt’s lack of judgment and maturity. …show more content…
When Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo wants to obtain revenge for Mercutio and challenges Tybalt to a duel. He had so much rage from Mercutio’s death he forgot all about the peace he wanted and the fact that Tybalt is his brother-in-law. When Romeo challenges Tybalt to a duel he announced, “That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul / Is but a little way above our heads / Staying for thine to keep him company / Either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (3.1.131-134). This shows how Romeo is not thinking things through clearly when he is in the emotion of hate. At this point he simply wants justice for his best friend and does not care that he is killing Juliet’s cousin; however this shows how important friendship is in his life and how love can cause hate. Romeo shows hate when he sees Juliet dead in her coffin and kills Paris because he thinks Paris forcing their marriage causes the death of Juliet. He is in so much rage he screams, “Wilt thou provoke me? Then have at thee, boy!” (5.3.70). After Juliet dies, Romeo is distraught and wants to succeed in revenge similar to how he killed Tybalt after Mercutio’s death. He found Juliet’s death to be unfair, so he decided to kill Paris. Emotions that cause hate can control the person’s actions and can easily lose control. Similarly, in this part of the play, Romeo loses control when he loses his loved ones and decides to kill
When Tybalt sees Romeo at a Capulet party he says, “Fetch me my rapier, boy… Now by the stock and honour of my kin, To strike him dead I hold it not a sin” (1.5.57-61). Romeo is at the Capulet’s party, but he hasn’t caused any trouble and has barely spoken a word since he entered, and yet Tybalt seems ready to fight him for just simply being. Tybalt claims that he must fight Romeo because he is duty-bound to do so to honor the Capulets which shows that this is a belief deeply imbedded into the minds of all Capulets. He then says that murdering a Montague in cold blood doesn’t make him guilty because all Montagues like Romeo deserve it. Tybalt’s quick temper and no remorse show just how deeply the hatred between the Montagues and Capulets truly stands.
Tybalt states, “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, / A villain, that is hither come in spite/ To scorn at our solemnity this night” (Shakespeare 502). This quote shows that Tybalt wants Romeo gone and out of the house. He is very loyal and proud of his family. However, it also shows that he would sooner crash the party than let Romeo go until his uncle yells at him. “Tybalt, still holding his grudge against/ Romeo, accused Mercutio of keeping company with the hateful and villainous/ young Montague” (Salem Press 5701).
Tybalt as a character is someone that can't be controlled and doesn’t obey order from the Capulet family. Tybalt constantly remarks about how he despises the Montagues “What, draw and talk of peace? I hate hell, all Montaugues, and thee. Have at thee coward!”(1,1,70-73) Tybalt is unwilling to simply leave the Montagues at peace and instead is only beginning to fight one of them.
Tybalt shows his hatred towards Montagues when he says, “I hate the word As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee” (1.1.65-66). Tybalt displays his value of loyalty by hating the Montague family to prove that he is loyal as a Capulet. Considering the way Tybalt is violent and willing to fight for the Capulets, the audience will understand that Tybalt values his loyalty to his family and will do anything to prove himself of
This act shows that Romeo does truly possess an explosive temper. In addition, this scene indisputably illustrates the fact that Tybalt is devoted to his family. Resuming with the Capulet tradition, Tybalt loathes the Montagues without a proper reason. He knows only that this house is a rival to his own, and that is enough basis for him to actively contest them. Because of this, Tybalt involves himself in two fatal altercations with Montague supporters.
Tybalt says,“What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee! Have at thee, coward!” (Shakespeare 1.1.71). The entire reason Tybalt, and the rest of the Capulet family are feuding with the Montague family.
This proves that throughout the book Tybalt will be looking to cause trouble to anyone he gets the chance to fight, even if it's a random Montague servant, to Romeo. At the Capulet's party, Romeo is roaming around bothering no one but Tybalt sees him and says, “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night. (page 55 act 1, Shakespeare)” Although Romeo isn't bothering anyone in any way Tybalt is aggressive towards him and wants to fight him as he believes Romeo is there to mock him. This proves that Tybalt is overreacting as Romeo isn’t affecting him in any way but wants to attack him as he believes that Romeo is mocking him.
I.v.100-103).The aforementioned quote illustrates Tybalt’s hatred towards all Montagues, including ones that haven’t made any moves against him, this hatred is initially dismissed by Capulet and this causes Tybalt to commit a terrible offense that later forces Romeo to be banished from the kingdom.
Romeo and Juliet's families hate each other and have had a feud for many years. Without this ancient feud Romeo and Juliet would have been able to freely love each other without having to be secret. Romeo's death was influenced by the hate between the two families. The reader is able to inference this from the Montague's and the Capulet's ancient feud. "
His hatred for the Montagues is shown in the quote, Jones 3 TYBALT: “It fits when such a villain is a guest. I’ll not endure him.” ( 1.5.73-74). Tybalt’s hatred for Romeo is eventually the death of him. Tybalt’s temper and rage is shown in the quote, TYBALT: “Patience perforce with willful choler meeting Makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting.
Though the Montagues try to make peace to cause no harm to the people around them and cause trouble Tybalt decides to say he hates peace and starts a fight. This shows how emotional Tybalt is and how he gets angry very easily, because the Montagues were not even trying to start any problems and Tybalt made the fight. Another example how angry and emotional Tybalt can get is when he tries to fight Romeo at the ball and quotes “ It Fits when such a villain is a guest, i’ll not endure him.” This shows that Tybalt’s anger overwhelms him very easily and automatically when he sees something he doesn’t like, because in the situation he was in Romeo was trying to have fun and not doing anything wrong Tybalt still tries to fight him because he’s a montague, even after Lord Capulet says himself to “leave Romeo alone and worry not of
In the play Romeo and Juliet hate is a major role in the story/play. The hate revolves around the hatred between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. Hatred is shown throughout Romeo and Juliet as shown by peoples’ acts of violence. The story does not reveal why the hatred began, only that it was an ongoing conflict between the two families.
Examining the Connection Between Love and Hate in Romeo and Juliet 1. To what extent is the wish to find love amidst a raging family feud psychologically problematic or psychologically advantageous for Romeo and/or Juliet? The wish to find love amidst a raging family feud is psychologically problematic because it won’t allow them to have approval from most, leading more possible hate on both sides with more tension. They might also have to be extremely careful who exactly they tell about their marriage. They must live with the guilt that they are betraying their family.
The theme of hate in Romeo and Juliet is expressed in many different ways but mostly around the rivalry of the Montague and Capulet families. Due to the long ongoing feud between the two families they lose the innocent lives of their children and friends. When Tybalt goes to kill Romeo but runs into Mercutio and ends up killing him shows the theme of hate if the two families weren’t fighting then they wouldn’t of ended up killing Mercutio who isn’t even apart of the Montagues or the Capulets so because of this hate in the play they lose the life of a good friend. The same goes for Romeo and Juliet’s death, if the family could've ended the feud then Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t of had to hide their love for each other and wouldn’t of had to die.
Tybalt illustrates passionate hate which makes him very impatient with the Montagues and leads to his own death and causes emotional distress to the Capulet family. Accordingly this can be seen when Romeo goes to the fest at the Capulets and Tybalt wants to kill him solely because he was present at the fest. This, by his voice, should be a Montague. — (to his PAGE) Fetch me my rapier, boy.
