Andrew Johnson could be described as a book. From the outer cover, the public sees Johnson as an accidental president who has made several mistakes. Concluding him as one of the worst Presidents in known history, but when you finally turn back the cover, his pages are not as black and white as what you would expect. There are many ways people perceived Andrew Johnson; some have positive views giving him the credit that he was very intelligent. President Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 in the town of Raleigh, North Carolina. His father, Jacob Johnson, died when he was only three years old, leaving his family in hardship. Andrew Johnson and his family moved to Tennessee in 1826. Struggling to meet the financial needs of the family, Johnson became employed as a tailor. Soon after starting, he met his future wife Eliza McCardle. At an early age of eighteen years old Johnson married McCardle who was only sixteen. The two started their own tailor shop. Johnson was considered poor which contributed to a lack of education. He didn’t let this slow him down, being so driven he quickly became fascinated in politics, using his tailor shop as a holding place for political discussions. During the Civil War the far-reaching Republicans wanted to give the African-Americans more freedom and rights that the conservative Republicans, both were on the side of the North. He was impeached for violating the “Tenure of Office Act”, which had been passed over Johnsons veto. It prohibited the president from dismissing certain federal official without the Senate approval, and for denouncing Congress as unfit to legislate. Andrew Johnson, former Vice President to President Abraham Lincoln, was sworn into office after the assassination of Lincoln in April of 1865. Andrew Johnson served as the 17th President of the United Stated from 1865-1869. Johnson, seemingly an honest and righteous man had every odd up against him including the Radical Republicans. He had no chance when up against the jurisdiction of the Radicals and fell short of dominion every time. Johnson’s reign was one of the few compelling presidency’s due to his continuous mix-ups and battles with the Radicals.
I can understand why Andrew Johnson ranks as one of the worst presidents of all time. In reality he was a strategical political move by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln chose him for his running mate to “quiet dissent by running with a non-northerner and a non-Republican” (Schultz, 2013). Had Lincoln known that this decision would cause any advancement he had made prior to his death in the Reconstruction process to take gigantic leaps backwards he may have made a different one. Johnson saw his office as a way to finally receive the respect of the southern aristocracy.

It was never established on whether Andrew Jackson was born in South Carolina or North Carolina, but he always claimed that he was born in South Carolina. Andrew Jackson during his time was considered a very patriotic politician he hated the rich, he hated the Indian, and loved the idea of slavery. It has been said that he grew up not educated and had a bad up bring but still managed to get to a high political suture. Jackson at one point was general and had a very decorated portfolio, which made sense he would become president, Andrew was most well know for “The Battle of New Orleans” where Andrew Jackson, prevented the British Army and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans nearing the end of that war.
