Could you consider the Reconstruction period in America a success? In my opinion is that it was indeed a success. Throughout my research, I found that the Reconstruction period was a time of acceptance of African American freedom in America. It was also a time that showed America’s ability to pull through any disaster and rebuild itself. Reconstruction was a time of true success not just for one reason, but for all the right reasons. After the Civil war the world was in great chaos even the North , they may have won the war and freed the slaves but they still had to pick up the pieces and make america great again. What was the reconstruction period of america? The reconstruction of America is the period of time that had followed the Civil war. The point of the reconstruction period was to rebuild and fix america after the tragedy of the war. Both the south and the north had to rebuild and pick up the broken pieces. The reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877 that is almost …show more content…
America made great strides and progress in the years following the war, they managed to get rid of two thirds of america's debt, they rebuilt and picked up the pieces after the war and they made amends with the south reuniting the country. As a positive result of the war the african american people did not have to be subjected to slavery anymore. They also gained a voice in the government , they were aloud to vote and own property. Laws were also made to protect them from discrimination as well as being protected from acts of violence. Also as a result of the war the North successfully made the south see the error of their ways and the south finally began to see the african american people as their equals. Changes were also made to the the constitution and a new amendment was made and passed. All of this was a great progress made by the united states of
The American history has had many memorable moments over the time period from 1870 to 1920 which has helped develop the way America is today. Each time period holds many life changing events and discoveries in them. We, as Americans, learn from past events and work together to make this country a better and safer home. Starting in the 1865 to 1877 the Reconstruction began in the South following after the American Civil War. This alteration in the south was not welcomed by the Southerners, which resulted in many problems throughout this process.
The reconstruction era refers to the period in time between 1861 and 1865, when efforts were made, after the civil war, to restore the relations between North and the South, to improve status of the blacks and, to restore normalcy in the country. While the country was able to reunite effectively the the country, it did nod do much to improve the condition of the blacks. Also it failed to solve the economic problems of the South.
But after 30 years, there were none. Reconstruction was also a success because it Restored the U.S as a unified nation, as stated in Reconstruction (1865-1877) by sparknote, “Reconstruction was a success in that it restored the United States as a unified nation” This evidence shows that reconstruction was also a success because because it Unified the United States, there were new laws invented by it. Reconstruction failed mostly, but had some good outcomes, it failed because of the president and not treating racism seriously. But there were some good things that
After the Civil War, Reconstruction enabled the South to rebuild their economic system and readmit into the Union, but the processes used to get there are largely discussed issues based upon if Reconstruction was actually successful. The success of Reconstruction is based upon your definition of success. People argue that towards the conclusion of Reconstruction, the South was admitted back into the Union and blacks remained free, but is that suitable? I believe Reconstruction was a failure for the fact that it failed to disassemble racial structures and it left the South susceptible to economic poverty, segregation, and corruption.
Maceo Cardinale Kwik Reconstruction Reconstruction was the twelve years after the civil war. Those twelve years were full of readjustment fixing the ruin the United States had fallen into. The problems that had the United states in disarray were how to, rebuild the South, reunite the states, and ensure the rights and protection of the newly freed African Americans. The civil war left the South in shambles, and newly freed slaves struggled to adjust to their new freedom. Most Southerners hated reconstruction and everything else about the North.
The aspects of the Reconstruction that I view as successes are the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights Act, and the 14th and
One main success of the Reconstruction that still defines America today is that the North and the South did come back together to form one Nation. Although it took 4 years of fighting and still more time after that, both the Union and the Confederacy came together again to form the United States of America. Another great accomplishment that resulted form the Reconstruction was abolishing slavery. After the time of Reconstruction was complete, there were no more slaves. And lastly, another huge achievement that arose from the reconstruction was being able to give all freed slaves, freedmen, and a life of their own.
The Reconstruction Era made the United States a new nation. The Reconstruction Era was a success because it left many significant legacies, including the Thirteenth Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment, Fifteenth Amendment, Civil Rights Act of 1866, Civil Rights Act of 1875 and
Reconstruction Era I believe the Reconstruction era is considered a success in that it ended the separation between the North and the South and that it restored the United States as a unified nation. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment was added to the constitution. The 13th amendment outlawed slavery, the 14th amendment protected all Americans under the law and the 15th amendment extend suffrage to all men. The Freedman’s Bureau and the Civil Rights Act worked to get African Americans back on their feet. For the first time black men were elected to government positions such as governor and senator.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
The American Civil War that was started due to the controversy over slavery in 1861, was won by The Union supported by President Lincoln against the Confederate states. President Lincoln’s original goal during the civil war was to reunify the nation as quickly as possible and help both sides come to an understanding. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the newly formed United States’ reconstruction era began. The Reconstruction era was put into effect by the Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. The Union’s victory in the Civil War had given African Americans a new sense of hope, devastated the southern economy, and eased the history of disunity in American political life.
The Reconstruction Era occurred in 1865, it was was a period after the Civil War in which America was focused on rebuilding the broken South. In 1867, the Radical reconstruction gave former slaves a voice in government. During this era, formers slaves gained a platform in the government, with some blacks as Congressmen. However, not everyone supported the idea of Reconstruction. Less than a decade after the Reconstruction period, a small group composed of democratic ex-confederate veterans, white farmers and white southerners sympathetic to white supremacy joined forces together to form the Ku Klux Klan.
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
Reconstruction a Failure or Success? Throughout the years, America has gone through many different political changes. Many presidents selected with different plans for our future. Sadly, many of those objectives have failed or came to an end.
