Why did texans fight in the civil war? What is the civil war? The civil war is one of the most important wars in the world. It was where our country split into two different “’Teams”. The union (North) and the confederacy (South). You may be thinking, “Were texans involved in the war?”. The answer is yes, but why you may be asking. There is multiple reasons. Broadly Texans fought in the war to protect their state. Texans fought in the war to protect state rights. “The crisis upon us involves only the right of self government.” (Document C). This quote tells us the Texans did fight to protect their own rights for their country. They needed to protect themselves along with their states rules. If they texans did not contribute to the war they would risk losing their own privileges. There was a chance that if the texans contributed they would have a greater chance of success. Texas was on the Confederate Side, which was the South and slavery was very popular there. Now why would they want slavery? If they lost slavery then they would have lost the people who took care of their things. And some even wanted slavery for their own selfish reasons. Equality was not a thing that they were supporting. Also if the Texans did not have their own slaves then they would have nobody to control farming and do their labor. Overall the south felt like their economy could not survive without it which is basically economic necessity. “That is this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race...is mutually beneficial to both bond (Slave)and free, and is….justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator” (Document B).
