Ulysses S. Grant By: Isabella Dion Ulysses S. Grant was an important man in the Civil War but his presidency is said to often be overlooked. Grant was said to fail at many things and be one of the worst president the U.S has had. He was a very important man in the Civil War and won the battle that ended the war. Early Life: Ulysses S. Grant was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio to Jesse and Hannah Grant. Ulysses S. Grant’s birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Grant was the oldest of 6 kids (including him) his siblings were: Samuel, Clara, Virginia, Orville, and Mary Grant. When he was a boy he showed great ability as a horseman. When Grant turned 17 he joined West Point military academy when being enrolled. An error listed him as Ulysses S. Grant was elected as the 18th president in 1868 when he was 46 years old. When Grant moved into the White House he was married to a girl named Julia and had four children: Dent Grant, Nellie Grant, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., and Jesse Root Grant. During his presidency Grant confirmed/passed the fifteenth amendment, Developed and Indian Peace Policy, Sent military to help protect African Americans from terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Grant did not turn to Republican leaders for advice instead, he turned to people he thought he could trust. The lead to some good people for him to turn to and some that doubting ones. Grant actually had no political ambitions. " He hated to see his name 'associated with politics either as an aspirant for office or as a partizan," (257). But, planned a campaign that made Robert E. Lee surrender. In one of Simpson's chapters, making his doubts understandable that any general could achieve that victory. Grant's military strategy was very simple, it was to find the enemy attack them immediately them hard and move on.
Shortly thereafter he was moved to be a brigadier general over a larger portion of the army. Two months later he was given command of the District of Southeast Missouri. Grant was a very prominent figure of the time period and led the Union to victory and helped heal the fractured United States afterward. General Grant began his military career at West Point when he was just sixteen. He was top of his class and when he graduated, he began his four years of service and went into combat in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to captain as a result of his bravery during the war. After this, his four-year commitment to the army was up, he left and did not expect to come back.

Andrew Johnson was born in North Carolina and had a pretty poor childhood. He was self-taught and didn’t go to school. He married a woman named Eliza McCardle and had 5 children. However, after he grew up and became a senator, he went on to become the 17th president we know as Andrew Johnson. He was appointed after Abe Lincoln got shot.
He wanted equality for all and under no circumstances was there any other choice, which made the North happy. But after Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson became president, he offered much more leeway for the South which set Reconstruction back a large amount. Andrew Jackson presidency focused a lot on small government and pleasing the common man. He attempted to shut down national banks to make government smaller. Jackson also enforces things like the Indian Removal Policy, which strengthened the bond between Jackson and the common man. Jackson was the first and only president to make the country debt too. All of these impacted are government today very much as well as other governments around the world.

President Andrew Jackson was a very popular president and did a lot of things during his presidency. But in my opinion, I think he was not democratic because he wanted everything done his way or no way, like during the Indian Removal act in Document 10. He wanted the Indians land so he had his soldiers move them \west into the Indian territory. One way that President Andrew Jackson was democratic was his Bank Veto Message to Congress in Document 4.

General Ulysses S. Grant was a very powerful man. He was the son of a tanner on the Western frontier. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was very modern, and thought you had to work hard no matter what. Grant was a man that did not live in the past.
