COCKPIT AUTOMATION A Good Servant but a Bad Master Introduction 1. With the advent of modern technology, the use of computers has become inevitable in the completion and performance of a particular task. While automation has proven to improve the speed of completion of a job, it drastically affects the "operator" whose task shifts from being the "performer" to being the "observer". This is where the issue of "complacency" sets in. With this major revolution, one may ask if the introduction of automation is indeed an advantage or disadvantage. 2. Since the evolution of this major global trend, automation has widely engulfed the aviation field. So I would like to discuss with you about cockpit automation. Definitions 3. To define cockpit automation we need to understand the meaning of automation first, which is an ill defined term generally taken as replacing human functioning with machine functioning. The agreed definition of Automation refers to "automatic operation", meaning operation with limited or no input by humans. While the merits and demerits of automation will always be debated because like every invention it has pros and cons and also it entirely depends upon the operator. However the trends have to be looked upon, too much automation is not at all an option because a man in the loop must be there. Not all situations could be fed into the automated system and till the time Artificial intelligence surpasses human intellect this will remain a reality. Machines, like humans, are prone to failure and when that happens; an able operator should be there to take control of the situation. The author effectively uses logical arguments to make the fear of automated cars irrational. An example of this is when Leonhardt mentions how automation can remove most errors – human errors – because “computers don’t get drowsy, drunk or distracted by text messages, and they don’t have blind spots.” These are all facts, which strengthens the argument because these factors cannot be denied. As with the Industrial Revolution, the Robot Revolution has too been faced with many adversaries. As in the past many claim that it would be end of society as we know it, so does Craig Lambert in “Our Unpaid, Extra Shadow Work.” Lambert argues against the automation of, what use to be, human jobs. Lambert, an editor and writer at the Harvard Magazine, argues that automation has lead to a loss of 3 million jobs (861). Lambert also exclaims that “the robots are in charge now, pushing a thousand routine tasks onto our backs” (862).

One of the movies mentioned in this article is Wall-E which uses technology to provide their perceived paradise and communication. This technology provides everything they need. Many people have different ways of approaching the topic of machines in our society today. Machines have certainly improved how individuals in the workforce produce their good or service; however, these such machines can lead to negative consequences. If our society does not limit our machine 's capabilities, it can lead to effects that cannot be understandable or controllable. Although machines have incredible abilities in reality, these abilities have certain flaws which can lead to something disastrous.
Nicholas Carr introduces his opinion of automation through an example of the overused system of autopilots during an airline flight and questions our growing dependence to technology that is gradually beginning to complete task that we can do for ourselves. Just imagine coming in the work one day and told that you were being replaced by a robot. People need work self driving cars don’t. A little under half the population of the world have drivers as a job just imagine all of them being lost that’s not good for the environment nor the pedestrians in the world there’s a lot of risks with self driving cars. James Hoffa states in an article” a heavy automated truck went the wrong way I’ll be a one-way”. That could have caused a lot of damage.
In “Better than Human”, Kelly mentions that it will be a trend for robots to replace humans on most, or even every working position in the near future as a outcome of the development of automaton-related technology. “We need to let robots take over”, Kelly assures, “they will do jobs we have been doing, and do them much better than we can (Kelly 311)”. With his observation of the invention of Baxter, he is persuaded in a great extent that humans will acquire new jobs as their old jobs get replaced by automatons. This newly invented robot surprisingly contains several epochal features, disregarding its extremely low price compared to its predecessors. With its benefits, Baxter can be promoted easily and applied to many industries, decreasing the costs of production and even re-generating the market eventually.
