Mourning Dove (Hum-ishu-ma), 1888-1936

Okanogan

Mourning Dove was born in Idaho to an Okanogan father and a Colville mother, and died on August 8, 1936 at the age of forty-eight. Drawing from her experiences, Dove’s writings documented the unfair treatment of, and loss of identity suffered by, mixedbloods, particularly the abuse of mixedblood women by white men. She attended the Sacred Heart Convent in Ward, WA, and business school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
