- A long-standing society directed at professional musicologists. Although this site offers little information about the society beyond membership application, and journal ordering, it does have a good list of Internet links.

- Probably the best-known industry organization, this was created in 1914 "to provide the essential link between the creators of music and the users of music." Included is a searchable database of performed music in their repertory, essential forms, interviews, a newsletter, and several guides, including one to musical resources in the music business.

- The Cinema Audio Society's purpose is to "create a proper channel of communication between the related sound crafts and between those instrumental to the production and distribution of film and television soundtracks." Also included on the site include a detailed description of the Society and the different ranks of membership, a calendar of events, and a current issue of the Journal of The Cinema Audio Society.

- One of the oldest professional music societies, the society was formed in 1946 "for the publication of original research into the history, construction, development and use of musical instruments." Contents of their journal are included here, and links to musical instrument collections are on the site.

- In Paris, a well-funded organization which aims at exploring computer and music connections. They describe their goal as "co-ordinating numerous partnerships with industrial firms or members of the scientific community and calling on musical experts (composers, musicians, instrument makers)." - With members in some 45 countries throughout the world, the association was founded in 1951 "to promote international cooperation and to support the interests of the profession." There are restricted areas for members.

- A fairly recent society, which was established in 1977 "in order to promote music theory as both a scholarly and a pedagogical discipline" has an ambitious web site with information for music theory online, virtual poster session, directory, and a bibliographic database searching tool for society publications.
- Songwriters Association of Canada

- Founded in 1896, it is the "largest union in the world representing the professional interests of musicians. The AFM works to improve musicians' wages and working conditions, and in support of all the arts and arts education." This web site provides local unions' web pages, FAQs on how to hire a musician, and articles on labor issues.
- International Committee of Musical Instrument Museums and Collections

- CIMCIM (Comité International des Musées et Collections d'Instruments de Musique) is one of "25 international committees of ICOM, the International Council of Museums, and was established in 1960... to promote high professional standards in the use and conservation of musical instruments in museums and collections." The site provides some collection links, and a large file of technical drawings of instruments in members' collections.
