International Association of Fire Safety Science

"The International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) was stablished in 1985 at the First International Symposium on Fire Safety Science held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. The Association was founded with the primary objective of encouraging research into the science of preventing and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results of such research. Multi-national work is a major feature of fire safety because similar problems arise internationally due to the fire hazards of modern aterials, configurations, and energy sources. In addition, the fire science ersonnel in most countries are few in number and the resources limited. To achieve progress, there needs to be international collaboration of researchers and practitioners. The International Association for Fire Safety Science perceives its role to lie in the scientific bases for achieving progress in unsolved fire problems. It will seek cooperation with other organizations, be they concerned with application or with the sciences that are fundamental to our interests in fire. It will seek to promote high standards, to ncourage and stimulate scientists to address fire problems, to provide the ecessary scientific foundations and means to facilitate applications aimed at reducing life and property loss." The association's publications and library provide fire data analysis, statistics, and research.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
