White House News Photographersı Association

³The WHNPA was founded on June 13, 1921 by the 17 Photographers who regularly covered the Office of President Warren G. Harding. Until its founding, photojournalists were regarded as second class citizens around the Executive Office and didn't even have access to the press room! Within a year and a half, WHNPA members earned equal status with reporters. Our first contest and photo exhibition were held in 1941. To add prestige to the contest, Congressmen were selected to judge the photography. Traditionally, first place still and video winners are invited to the Oval Office to meet the President. Today, newspaper and news magazine readers and television viewers all over the world rely on our 500+ members for interesting, accurate, and responsible coverage of the President, Congress, and major news events in Washington, D.C. or elsewhere around the world.²
