American Antiquarian Society

The American Antiquarian Society was founded in 1812 in Worcester, Massachusetts and is the third oldest historical society in the United States. Its mission is to collect and preserve the printed record on American history and culture and to make it avaiable for study to researchers. The holdings include three million books, pamphlets, broadsides, manuscripts, prints, maps, and newspapers and is the largest collection of printed sources on the history, literature, and culture of the first two hundred and fifty years of the America. The AAS specializes in the period up to 1877 and it possesses two-thirds of all printed materials to have been been printed between 1640 and 1821. This gopher site describes the programs and collections of the society. The American Cultural Resources Association is devoted to serving "the [business] needs of the cultural resources industry." This encompasses a wide variety of fields, "including historic preservation, history, archaeology, architectural history, historical architecture, and landscape architecture." These pages provide information on government relations, pertinent happenings in congress, information on workshops, and information on ACRA itself.
American Folklore Society

Founded in 1888 at Harvard University by humanistic and social science scholars, the American Folklore Society advocates the collection and analysis of oral and material traditions using both literary and anthropological methodologies. This newly created AFS web site reflects this interdisciplinary trend and is divided into four categories. The first, Contacting AFS, contains information about the officers of the society and the site manager. The second, About AFS, leads to the outdated AFS Gopher (which still contains an archive of AFS Newsletters), information concerning the Annual Meeting, AFS Bylaws, Membership, Publications, and Sections. The third section, Resources, lists the Calender of Events, Conferences, Internships, Jobs, Prizes, and Vitae Archive. Finally, the Related Sites, points areas of folkloristic interest: the American Council of Learned Societies, Graduate Programs, American Folklife Center, Center for Folklife Programs, and other Folklore Links.

"The American Historical Association (AHA) is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1884 and incorporated by Congress in 1889 for the promotion of historical studies, the collection and preservation of historical documents and artifacts, and the dissemination of historical research. As the largest historical society in the United States, the AHA serves as the umbrella organization for historians. In this role, it conducts an active scholarly and professional program for historians interested in every period and geographical area. Among its 15,000 members are faculty at secondary schools and two- and four-year colleges and universities, independent historians, and historians in museums, historical organizations, libraries and archives, government, and other areas." The purpose of the National Railway Historical Society "is to preserve historical material and information pertaining to railroad transportation, to issue publications relation to the subject, and to encourage the use of rail transportation. The National Women's History Project

"The National Women's History Project is a non-profit corporation, founded in Sonoma County, California in 1980. We are self-supporting through funds raised from the sale of materials, consulting services, and donations from our national constituency."

NWHP services include maintaining the clearinghouse for U.S. women's history information, producing a catalog of materials related to women's history, producing videos, posters, guides, and supplies for schools and workplaces, connducting in-service training for school teachers, coordinating the Women's History Network, and providing consulting services for publishers, media producers, and journalists. Their site includes a catalog of women's history materials, info on National Women's History Month and links to related sites.

Boone Society, Inc.

An association of descendants, genealogists and historians who enjoy studying the lives and times of the family of Daniel Boone. It was formed as a reference service for researchers, a conduit for genealogists, clearing-house for bibliographical works, and to host the biennial Boone Family Reunion. One of the principal goals of the Society is to identify and preserve Boone-related documents and artifacts. With so much of America's history being paved over with amusement parks and fast-food restaurants, this is not an easy task, but it is one that our members believe is worth pursuing. There is a wealth of information available about the colonial and revolutionary periods in which the Boones made their mark. The Society helps researchers identify relevant reference material or establish family links, as the case may be, while sifting fact from fancy. Our growing bibliography of genealogical documentation can be useful to members seeking lineage information." Theodore Roosevelt Association

"The Theodore Roosevelt Association was chartered by Congress in 1920 to preserve the memory of President Theodore Roosevelt. The organization previously owned Sagamore Hill, the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace and TR Island, all now given to the American People. Much of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University and some of the material in the Library of Congress orignated or is still owned by the association. The TRA continues as a resource for scholars at all levels. TRA programs such as the Teddy Bear Drive for New York City hospitals, and the Police Awards which recognize officers who have overcome physical adversity while continuing to render outstanding service are only two of the regional and national activities designed to remind the public of the the principals, ideals and history of the 26th President of the United States.
