This play is a historically-inspired history of the early part of Henry IV of England's reign. When Henry refuses to ransom one of his nobleman Percy's kinsman, the Percy family joins Scottish rebels against the English crown. When battle ensues, Prince Hal (later Henry V) quits his life of revelry to save his father and kill Henry Percy in the battle of Shrewsbury (1403).
