Belle Herbert wrote about the difficulties and the richness of her life as an Athabascan woman in Alaska both before and after Alaska became a U.S. State. She lived to be over 100 years old and her memories of nineteenth century life on the upper Yukon River were translated into English from Gwich'in Athabaskan. She was known as the oldest living woman in Alaska, she was still alive in 1982.
